CFP--Information Overload: An International Challenge to Professional Communication Practices

Dear Colleagues-- I am forwarding on this CFP which might be of interest to some. Best, Pam We would like to invite you to submit a proposal for a chapter in an upcoming book entitled, "Information Overload: An International Challenge to Professional Communication Practices." As you know, information overload in all its forms has become a major issue for all practicing professionals, but little has been formally studied about its effects on efficiency, effectiveness, and hence, the bottom line. We hope to explore the following topics in this book: • What is information overload? What are some causes of information overload? • What effects do content and/or media selection have on information overload? • What effects do the prevalent mobile technologies have on information overload? • How can we measure the costs of information overload? • Is there a difference in levels of information overload among various regions or countries, for example, between Europe and the United States? • What are the effects of information overload in specific industries? • What are the effects of information overload on end users or consumers of information? • What are some knowledge management techniques that could be used to effectively deal with information overload? • What are some ways of reducing or controlling information overload? Prospective authors are invited to submit chapter proposals of about 1000 words on or before January 30, 2009. In their proposals, prospective authors should clearly explain the purpose and contents of their proposed chapter and how the chapter would fit into the overall text. Authors will be notified of the status of their proposal and sent chapter organization guidelines by May 29, 2009. Drafts of chapters will be due on October 1, 2009. Additional details are given in the attached Call for Chapter Proposals. OII SDP 2009: Brisbane (6-17 July, 2009) http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/teaching/sdp/ The programme aims to stretch the thinking of all students on a range of issues, to provide valuable advice and support for students' thesis research, and to establish a peer network of excellent young researchers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the thematic focus this year will be on 'Creativity, Innovation and the Internet': our partners on the SDP since 2003, the Creative Industries Faculty is at the forefront of pioneering international research initiatives in creative industries policy, applied creative industries research, digital media design, and the creative and performing arts. As in previous years, the programme will involve daily research seminars and panel sessions given by leading academics, with students having the opportunity to present their research to their peers in informal seminars. Prof. Vincent Price and Joseph Cappella have worked on this theme for almost a decade. Their first project, Electronic Dialogue 2000, was conducted in 2000. Artifact Special Issue: Canonical writings on design

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS Journal: Artifact Special Issue: Canonical writings on design Artifact, an international peer-reviewed academic journal dealing with design, plans a special issue for mid-2009 dedicated to canonical writings on design. Any search of the literature on design reveals a burgeoning field of writing that recurrently reformulates itself according to processes of economic, social and technological change. Within this flux of ideas, however, there are certain books that warrant acknowledgement as anchor points for any investigation into their respective area of design. The Artifact special issue on canonical writings in design welcomes articles on single books or groups of books that you consider have a significant and enduring place in the literature of design. Where some view canon formation as an expression of ideological control, the special issue seeks to stimulate debate concerning design's essential readings by exploring the authority of highly valued texts. Artifact encourages cross-fertilization, interconnections, and crossbreeding among different scientific disciplines, the design industry, and the arts. We seek reviews that reflect the broad field of design and show how a canonical design literature is open and expanding, as new issues and influences impact on the activity of design. The goal of the issue is to add to the design field's intellectual robustness, to establish principles for the ongoing critical evaluation of key texts and to ensure that important works are not neglected as a result of the ongoing cycle of publication. Alternatively, we recognize that the scope of a single journal issue means any attempt at canon- identification will be neither all-embracing nor definitive. The proposed books will thus shed light on the interplay of current and enduring concerns in design. Review essays should be no more than 3,500 words in length and are due 1 February 2009.
