So-called Digital Natives - interesting newspaper article
by Robert Ackland 22 Jan '09

22 Jan '09

The following article in The Australian newspaper may be of interest to members of this list: "The natives aren't quite so restless" by Christoper Scanlon http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24939539-25192,00.html An interesting look at the existence of so-called "digital natives", and implications for teaching technology at universities. An excerpt from the article: "Despite the hype about digital natives' technological skills, the reality is that most students don't come to class with technological knowledge pre-installed. The question is, why is there such a divergence between claims about digital natives and the realities of the classroom? The answer is partly a matter of class, commercial interest and confusion." -- ------------------------------------- Dr Robert Ackland Fellow and Masters Coordinator Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute The Australian National University e-mail: robert.ackland(a)anu.edu.au homepage: http://adsri.anu.edu.au/people/robert.php project: http://voson.anu.edu.au ph./fax: +61 2 6125 0312/+61 2 6125 2992 mail: Coombs Building, 9 Canberra, ACT 0200 AUSTRALIA Information about the Master of Social Research (Social Science of the Internet specialisation): http://adsri.anu.edu.au/study/msr.php -------------------------------------

Re: [Air-L] So-called Digital Natives - interesting newspaper article
by Julian Hopkins 22 Jan '09

The 'digital campus' podcast (which I would recommend to anyone on this list) covered the same issue last September, if anyone is interested - http://digitalcampus.tv/2008/09/24/episode-32-going-native/ I also find that many students are not as familiar with software as one would expect, given all the hype (or hardware for that matter, one student bought an iPod because she thought that she needed one to be able to listen to *pod*casts). It seems to me that there are some people who are always more curious about how software works, or who want to explore its different possibilities, and those are the ones who become more proficient in tweaking and (eventually) hacking programmes. Most people will use the basic functions of what is presented to them, and not go much further than that; for example, it's always surprised me how little many office workers know of how to use Office Word or Excel. I guess where the 'digital native' aspect may come in is that, where the 'immigrant' is probably more likely to want to stick with the programme they know, the 'native' is more willing to try out new software/gadgets. This is probably not because of an innate knowledge of the inner workings of software or different logic, but because they are used to seeing new things come out regularly. However, a corollary to that perhaps is that new software and gadgets are likely to conform as much as possible to previous interfaces and thus the need for the 'natives' to adapt to something new is minimised. Overall, it will always be a minority who are willing to take risks, innovate, etc. Cheers, Julian ++++++++++ Blog: www.julianhopkins.net Skype: julhop IM: jfprhopkins(a)hotmail.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2009 12:27:08 +1100 From: Robert Ackland <robert.ackland(a)anu.edu.au> Subject: [Air-L] So-called Digital Natives - interesting newspaper article To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Message-ID: <497679EC.4020809(a)anu.edu.au> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed The following article in The Australian newspaper may be of interest to members of this list: "The natives aren't quite so restless" by Christoper Scanlon http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24939539-25192,00.html An interesting look at the existence of so-called "digital natives", and implications for teaching technology at universities. new version of the software coffee released
by Luca Tateo 21 Jan '09

21 Jan '09

Dear colleagues, it is a pleasure to announce the new release of CoFFEE software (4.1 version): "The CoFFEE After". It is downloadable at the http://www.coffee-soft.org/ Web site starting from Jan, 22th, and at the Sourceforge site: http://sourceforge.net/projects/coffee-soft/ now! What's new in version 4.1? 1) New tools Two more tools have been added: - Internet Explorer Tool: allows each student to navigate the World Wide Web through a standard browser. It offers the standard functionalities of a (private) browser, but also the opportunity for the teacher to provide a "follow-me" mechanism. - Document Browser Tool: the Document Browser tool is an HTTP server that allows the teacher to share documents with the classroom; students can open the documents and browse the links that are eventually present in them. 2) Activity indicators The teacher can now monitor the activity level of the students in real time. Close to the name of each student there is an icon indicating the level of partecipation to the discussion (red = low, green = medium, blue = high), based on the number of messages sent in his/her group in the current step. By selecting a student, the teacher can see in details the number of messages sent in each tool and the percentage of messages sent in the group. 3) "Fully anonymous" behaviour In the Chat Tool and the Threaded Discussion Tool the teacher can activate a "fully anonymous" behaviour: in this case teacher cannot see the names of the students and the report (PDF/RTF/HTML) does not bring information about the names of the contributors. The identity is, however, still present in the traces/logs. 4) Hebrew nationalization CoFFEE has been (partially) nationalized in Hebrew language, and (partial) support for right-to-left widgets has been added. Try and enjoy it! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Luca Tateo Project LEAD - Department of Education Sciences, University of Salerno (Italy) via Rufoli, 23 Ogliara I-84135 Salerno mobile +39.392.5178418, +39.347.5423594 office +39.089.962106 ltateo(a)unisa.it, network.salerno(a)tiscali.it Skype ID: luca.tateo lucatateo.blog.tiscali.it ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

new fee waiver policy
by Charles Ess 20 Jan '09

20 Jan '09

Dear AoIR-ists, Those of you who attended the Annual General Membership (AGM) meeting during Internet Research (IR) 9.0 last October in Copenhagen (thanks again, Lisbeth, Brian, & Co!) will remember that our stalwart Treasurer, Monica Murero, reported that AoIR had achieved a strong and stable financial state - leading us to the very important question: how do we make the best use of our available funds so as to best benefit AoIR members? I'm very pleased to announce that one of our first responses to this central concern is a new fee waiver policy. Briefly, we will fund up to three IR conference fee waivers for those who have much to contribute to an annual Internet Research conference, but whose financial situation will otherwise prevent their attending. As you can see by the policy guidelines (complete version below), these fee waivers are designed to directly expand the diversity of viewpoints, cultures, etc. represented at our IR conferences. (Long-time members of AoIR, in particular, will recognize here an effort to address a concern driving the organization since its inauguration, i.e., how to foster and collect Internet-focused research and scholarship across a genuinely global range of perspectives and cultures - in part, by encouraging participation and representation from those countries and cultures whose scholars and researchers face the most severe financial limitations?) This information will also be posted on the AoIR and IR 10.0 websites soonest. In closing, and at the risk of highlighting a U.S.-centric perspective, I cannot help but observe the happy accident that we are able to announce this policy on the day that we in the U.S. are celebrating the inauguration of a new President. What many of us in the U.S. anticipate to be a new spirit of inclusion, openness, and striving for greater equality here and abroad is clearly resonant with AoIR's modest but significant step towards greater inclusion and diversity in the form of this fee waiver. On that happy thought - happy inauguration day! - c. President, Association of Internet Researchers <www.aoir.org> Co-Editor, International Journal of Internet Research Ethics http://ijire.uwm.edu Co-chair, CATaC conferences <www.catacconference.org> Exemplary persons seek harmony, not sameness. -- Analects 13.23 ==> Fee Waiver Policy In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research (IR) conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers will make available up to three conference fee waivers per year. The number of fee waivers will depend first of all upon the ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the quality of the applications for fee waivers. Applications for fee waivers are invited from student or faculty authors whose paper or panel proposals have already been accepted via the AoIR IR conference reviewing process. All applications should be directed to the Vice-President of AoIR, and must be received by June 30 of the conference year. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should be no longer than 2 pages, and must include the following information: 1) A brief description of how the author's presentation or contribution to the AoIR IR conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the annual AoIR Internet Research conference. 2) An explanation of the author's distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver. These may include, but are by no means limited to: exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR IR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one's own work. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with her / his circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is optional, however, not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers will be awarded on the basis of the Executive Committee's collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR IR conference. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations of fee waiver applications will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there will be more fully meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless we hope that awarded fee waivers will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also thereby enrich the AoIR IR conferences in important new ways. Approved by the AoIR Executive Committee, 20 November 2008
