Submission deadline for IR 10.0 extended, plus author info
by Susanna Paasonen 20 Jan '09

20 Jan '09

Dear all, We are working hard on setting up the new OCS conference system for the forthcoming IR 10.0 Internet:Critical conference in Milwaukee but will not be able to launch it until January 26 (which will be the earliest date to submit a proposal). Due to this, the CFP deadline will be extended until February 16 (which again means that notifications of acceptance will arrive end of March). I do realize that this long a wait with the submissions can be frustrating but we want to be sure that everything really works before the launch. We do appreciate your patience. Please note that in order to submit a proposal, one will need to create an account with the OCS conference system since old logins and passwords will not be carried over. Guidelines on how to do this will be available once the system is up and running (and linked through the conference web site, http://ir10.aoir.org/) Meanwhile, I'm attaching below the guidelines for submitting papers, panels, and roundtables to help with the preparations. In case you have any further questions or queries concerning these, or conference submissions in general, please do not hesitate to contact me. with best regards, Susanna Author guidelines: * PAPERS (individual or multi-author) - submit abstract of 600-800 words The abstract should indicate your methodological and theoretical framework * FULL PAPERS (OPTIONAL): For submitters requiring peer review of full papers, manuscripts of up to 8,000 words will be accepted for review. These will be reviewed and judged separately from abstract submissions Please be sure that all identifying information is removed from the paper as well as its metadata Papers need to be in either ".doc" or ".pdf" format only (NOT ".docx") * PANEL PROPOSALS - submit a 600-800 word description of the panel theme, plus 250-500 word abstract for each paper or presentation Please be sure to remove names of individual panel presenters in the body of the proposal, to ensure blind peer review * ROUNDTABLE PROPOSALS - submit a statement indicating the nature of the roundtable discussion and interaction Please be sure to remove names of individual roundtable participants in the body of the proposal, to ensure blind peer review Papers, presentations and panels will be selected from the submitted proposals on the basis of multiple blind peer review, coordinated and overseen by the Program Chair. Each individual is invited to submit a proposal for 1 paper or 1 presentation. A person may also propose a panel session, which may include a second paper that they are presenting. An individual may also submit a roundtable proposal. You may be listed as co-author on additional papers as long as you are not presenting them. Full papers should not exceed 8,000 words in length. If your word-processor is capable of doing a word count please use it to print this at the end of the text, together with the date of the manuscript. Notes should be kept to a minimum and placed at the end of the article before the references; footnotes should be avoided. Illustrations: Tables, figures and plates should not be inserted within the pages of the manuscript but should be submitted on separate pages attached to the article. References: please use the reference/format system most appropriate for your discipline (APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago, etc.) Susanna Paasonen Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies Program Chair / IR 10.0

MUVEs in Teaching and Learning - Online discussion event begins 25th Jan
by Helen Keegan 20 Jan '09

20 Jan '09

*apologies for cross-posting* The EXTEND project team, funded by JISC-EMERGE Benefits and Realisation, are hosting a series of online asynchronous discussions based around Learning Technologies. With contributions, videos and podcasts from JISC-EMERGE-funded projects HABITAT and MOOSE, the event will run from Sunday 25 Jan - Sunday 8 Feb 2009 and will focus on Multi-User Virtual Environments in Teaching and Learning. Some topics and questions include: · Can learning activities designed for 3D MUVEs be transferable to different contexts, disciplines or levels of education? · What does the term 'collaboration' mean relative to MUVEs? · Does the social nature of 3D MUVEs alter the tutor-student-tutor relationship? · What do MUVEs provide in terms of socialising/informal-learning that other platforms do not? · How relevant is 'play' and 'creativity' outside of the arts? Will non arts subjects ever accept MUVEs as a playful space within their teaching? · Are skills from more established technologies transferable into emerging technologies like 3D MUVEs? The event will be hosted on the HELP (Higher Education Learning Professionals) network, which you can join by visiting http://tiny.cc/IunFI - this will take you to a login page where you can create an account in 2 easy steps and enter the discussion. Please do join us for a lively and thought-provoking event! YouTube: The Reference Tool
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 20 Jan '09

20 Jan '09

Colleagues/ Seems Obvious To Me ... /Gerry New York Times / January 18, 2009 / Ping At First, Funny Videos. Now, a Reference Tool / By MIGUEL HELFT FACED with writing a school report on an Australian animal, Tyler Kennedy began where many students begin these days: by searching the Internet. But Tyler didn't use Google or Yahoo. He searched for information about the platypus on YouTube. "I found some videos that gave me pretty good information about how it mates, how it survives, what it eats," Tyler said. Similarly, when Tyler gets stuck on one of his favorite games on the Wii, he searches YouTube for tips on how to move forward. [snip] While he favors YouTube for searches, he said he also turns to Google from time to time. Tyler's way of experiencing the Web - primarily through video - may not be mainstream, at least not yet. But his use of YouTube as his favorite search engine underscores a shift that is much broader than the quirky habits of children. The explosion of all types of video content on YouTube and other sites is quickly transforming online video from a medium strictly for entertainment and news into one that is also a reference tool. As a result, video search, on YouTube and across other sites, is rapidly morphing into a new entry point into the Web, one that could rival mainstream search for many types of queries. by Marcus Foth 20 Jan '09

20 Jan '09

Digital Cities 6: Concepts, Methods and Systems of Urban Informatics Workshop at the 4th International Conference on Communities and Technologies Penn State, USA, 24 June 2009 April 16th, 2009 Workshop position papers due May 18th, 2009 Author notifications sent June 24th, 2009 Workshop 1 Theme http://cct2009.ist.psu.edu/workshops.cfm 2 Topics Relevant workshop topics include but are not limited to the following: • Civic and community engagement strategies to support urban planning • Public sphere, participation and online deliberation systems • Urban e-government, e-governance, e-participation, e-democracy approaches • u-City: Ubiquitous computing, pervasive technology, wireless internet and mobile applications • Locative media, navigation and space • Urban informatics design and development methods and epistemologies • Multi-format user-generated content (narratives, photos, videos, multimedia) • Neogeography and 3D virtual environments for urban design and planning • Simulations to reproduce and analyse complex social phenomena and city systems • Social networking, collective intelligence and crowd sourcing in the urban context • Environmental, economic and social sustainability • Citizen science • Access, trust, privacy, safety and surveillance • Implications for residential architecture and the design of cities and public spaces • Ethical considerations scrutinizing the assumptions behind urban informatics 3 Organisation and Submission Details This is a full day workshop. We will start off with a keynote address by an eminent speaker. Rather than formal conference-style paper presentations, we will follow the successful peer interview format and ask each participant to interview another contributing author. Pairs will be assigned in advance to prepare questions and engage with the paper. After lunch, there will be a range of group activities and a closing plenary discussion at the end. The workshop can accommodate a maximum number of between 25 to 30 participants including presenters in order to provide an environment that is conducive to debate and interaction. We are interested in three types of contributions: Concepts: Essay style papers discussing theoretical and conceptual ideas and innovation within a cross-disciplinary framework. Methods: Papers reporting on novel approaches in the area of urban informatics, e.g. network action research, shared visual ethnography, urban probes, cross-disciplinary methods, etc. Systems: Reports of systems and case studies that ground findings in practice and experience. Prospective participants are asked to submit a position paper (2-4 pages total, in English, ACM SIGCHI 2-column format, same as for the C&T full papers) related to one of the workshop topics. Each submission should also include a short biography stating the author’s background and motivation for attending the workshop. Workshop position papers are due on April 16th, 2009 and will be reviewed and selected by the organisers with the support from an international program committee. Accepted authors will be notified by May 18th, 2009 – to leave enough time to qualify for the early bird conference registration. The acceptance of a workshop position paper implies that at least one of the authors will register for both the workshop and the Communities & Technologies 2009 conference. The workshop takes place on June 24th, 2009. After the workshop, selected contributors are invited to submit a full paper by October 1st, 2009. Full papers will undergo double blind peer review before being published. Arrangements for an edited book or a special issue of a relevant international journal are currently underway. 4 Bibliography Each Digital Cities workshop has produced an edited volume containing selected workshop papers and other invited contributions as follows: Digital Cities 5 -- Foth, M. Re: new media and shock
by Stephanie Kent 19 Jan '09

19 Jan '09

Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. Shock, by definition, puts one in a state of non-responsiveness; the challenge may be the degree to which that lack of response gets carried over or continued into the return to the mundane, especially after the state-of-shock has worn off. best, steph http://www.reflexivity.us On Jul 10, 2005, at 3:07 PM, air-l-aoir.org-request(a)listserv.aoir.org wrote: > Hello all--a colleague of mine asked me if I could help him with the > following question. Call for Papers - Deadline is 2 Days Away - Posters Encouraged
by Stuart Shulman 19 Jan '09

19 Jan '09

Call for Papers - Deadline is 2 Days Away - Posters Encouraged With the deadline two days away, I want to encourage those of you with creative research ideas but not yet finished papers to submit a poster proposal for the conference on YouTube. To date, we have about 15 papers submitted and we expect a few more, providing the basis for a nice workshop. There is a $1,000 prize for the best poster and we anticipate being able to support some graduate student travel to present posters. This will be a lively, hands-on, visually rich meeting that lays the groundwork for a decade of collaboration between social and computer science researchers in this domain. "YouTube and the 2008 Election Cycle in the United States" April 16 & 17, 2009 - Amherst, Massachusetts http://youtube08election.crowdvine.com/ A two-day University of Massachusetts Amherst workshop jointly hosted by the: Departments of Political Science, Computer Science, and Communication Science, Technology, and Society Initiative (STS) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Center for Public Policy and Administration College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Journal of Information Technology & Politics (JITP) Qualitative Data Analysis Program (QDAP) National Center for Digital Government (NCDG) Submission Deadline Extended: January 21, 2009 Submission Website: http://www.criticalmath.com/method/p.php?org_id=12789&l=submitpaper Conference Home Page: http://www.umass.edu/polsci/youtube/ Approach The Program Committee encourages disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches rooted in political science, media studies, and communication scholarship. The JITP Editor strongly endorses new and experimental approaches involving collaboration with information and computer science scholars. Potential topics might include, but are not limited to: - citizen initiated campaign videos, - candidates' use of YouTube, - bloggers use of YouTube to influence the primaries or election, - the impact of YouTube on traditional or new media coverage of the election cycle, - the effect of YouTube on citizen interest, knowledge, engagement, or voting behavior, - social network analysis of YouTube and related election-oriented sites, - political theory or communication theory and YouTube in the context of the 2008 election, - new metrics that support the study of the "YouTube Effect" on elections, - archives for saving and tools for mapping the full landscape of YouTube election content, - use of YouTube in the classroom as a way to teach American electoral politics, or - reviews of existing scholarship about YouTube. Keynote Speakers Day 1: Richard Rogers, Professor in New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam and Director of govcom.org. Dr. Rogers is a Web epistemologist, an area of study where the main claim is that the Web is a knowledge culture distinct from other media. Rogers concentrates on the research opportunities that would have been improbable or impossible without the Internet. His research involves studying and building info-tools. He studies and makes use of the adjudicative or 'recommender' cultures of the Web that help to determine the reputation of information as well as organizations. The most well-known tool Rogers has developed with his colleagues is the Issue Crawler, a server-side Web crawler, co-link machine and graph visualizer. Day 2: Noshir Contractor, Northwestern University, the Jane S. & William J. White Professor of Behavioral Sciences in the School of Engineering, School of Communication and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, USA. He is the Director of the Science of Networks in Communities (SONIC) Research Group at Northwestern University. He is investigating factors that lead to the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of dynamically linked social and knowledge networks in communities. Specifically, his research team is developing and testing theories and methods of network science to map, understand and enable more effective networks in a wide variety of contexts including communities of practice in business, science and engineering communities, disaster response teams, public health networks, digital media and learning networks, and in virtual worlds, such as Second Life. Paper Submissions Authors are invited to prepare and submit to JITP a manuscript following one of the six submission formats by January 21, 2009. These formats include research papers, policy viewpoints, workbench notes, review essays, book reviews, and papers on teaching innovation. The goal is to produce a special issue, or double issue, of JITP with a wide variety of approaches to the broad theme of "YouTube and the 2008 Election Cycle in the United States." How to Submit Everything you need to know about how to prepare and submit a strong JITP paper via the JITP web site is documented at http://www.jitp.net/. Papers will be put through an expedited blind peer review process by the Program Committee and authors will be notified about a decision by February 15, 2009. A small number of papers will be accepted for presentation at the conference. Other paper authors will be invited to present a poster during the Friday evening reception. All posters must include a "YouTube" version of their research findings. Travel Support We anticipate having the ability to support the travel expenses of the presenting author of accepted papers. Should the number of accepted papers exceed our ability to provide travel support, funds will go first to graduate students and then on an as-needed basis for other authors. Best Paper and Poster Cash Prizes The author (or authors) of the best research paper will receive a single $1,000 prize.
