Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Language, Literature, and Communication Tenure Track Junior Faculty Position in Communication and Technology The Department of Language, Literature, and Communication seeks a strong scholar/researcher in communication and technology. We are especially interested in candidates whose focus complements faculty strengths in games studies, human-computer interaction, or new media studies from the perspective of current communication theory and research methods. Candidates are expected to develop a substantial program of research leading to peer-reviewed publication and external funding. Teaching opportunities will be at the undergraduate and graduate level with the typical teaching load set at two courses per semester. Our flexible program allows faculty to devise and teach courses related to individual scholarly interests. The candidate should show evidence of strong promise in teaching and scholarship The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a multidisciplinary mission in communication in technologically mediated contexts that draws upon communication studies, human-computer interaction, digital rhetoric, technical communication, new media studies, and graphic design. The department has just added a joint B.S. in Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences and an M.S. in Human Computer Interaction to a program portfolio that includes one of the top-ranked Ph.D.s in Communication and Rhetoric in the country and a joint B.S. in Electronic Media, Arts, and Communication. The department also makes substantial contributions to teaching in B.S. and M.S. programs in Information Technology. Faculty and students have access to the Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory (http://www.sbrl.rpi.edu) and other Institute research facilities. Rensselaer is also a U.S. News and World Report top-50 university with approximately 5000 undergraduate and 2500 graduate students. David, I haven't seen Annette Markham's Life Online mentioned in this discussion so far. She does some very close ethnographic description of the online experience in MUDs which could be quite helpful in a phenomenological vein. She has a wonderful interview with Terri Senft, who is on this list and who I believe might also have some smart things to say about phenomenology, performativity, and that sort of thing -- most of her writing is collected on her website or in her LiveJournal. Bonnie Nardi, who was mentioned to you earlier, is also on this list and would be a good person to pose this question to; she is normally very responsive to email but I believe she is out of the country this term and I haven't heard much from her. Hi David, McCarthy and Wright's Technology as Experience (2004) may be helpful in this regard. Dear Colleagues-- Kirk St. Amant asked me to to send this along to the list. <<BEGIN CALL FOR PROPOSALS>> Call for Panel and Paper Proposals: IEEE International Professional Communication Conference 2008 (IPCC 2008) Conference Theme: Opening the Information Economy Conference Location: Concordia University, Montréal, Canada Conference Dates: July 13-16, 2008 The information economy is based on the collection and the exchange of data and ideas. We all either contribute to or use materials from the information economy in most aspects of our everyday lives. As a result, the information economy exists as an environment in which we are all contributors and consumers. Within this system, effective communication is essential to success, allowing individuals to contribute ideas and information effectively and to make efficient use of the goods and services. Few of us, however, understand all of the nuances of the information economy or the communication factors that affect its operations. This conference seeks to examine or to "open" this economic model by examining the connections between communication practices and the products, practices, and services that constitute the information economy. The objective of such an examination will be to help attendees better understand and participate in the information economy as both contributors and consumers. The conference will take place on the campus of Concordia University in Montréal, Canada and will consist of paper presentations and panel discussions that focus on various communication, design, social, and cultural aspects of the information economy.
