I came across a Technology Review article this morning which might interest some folks here who look at the intersection of ICTs and public policy. Unfortunately the devil is always in the details when such a great idea enters a political process, and then actual implementation. The Shneiderman-Preece article appeared in Science this past week. Social Study of IT Open Research Forum

Dear friends: The Information Systems Group of the London School of Economics will host the Social Study of IT Open Research Forum (SSIT-ORF), on 21st and 22nd of March 2007. This will follow the SSIT Workshop at the LSE (http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/informationSystems/newsAndEvents/2007event s/SSIT7.htm). The Open Research Forum will be an opportunity for IS researchers to present their work and discuss a broad range of themes relating to the SSIT in an informal, constructive setting. Primarily, the Forum provides an ideal opportunity for PhD and young IS researchers to present their work and raise questions on issues of their concern-substantive, theoretical, methodological or practical. It is also a useful experience for other researchers wishing to understand what SSIT is like, though their research approach may be different e.g. from an engineering or business perspective. In previous years the Forum attracted also experienced SSIT researchers, supervisors and PhD programme directors and we had stimulating discussions about the merits and challenges of SSIT research. There will be a number of short presentations (about 10 minutes) and panel discussions with plenty of time to focus on emerging questions and issues. Registrations for the SSIT-ORF are currently taking place. Those who are interested in presenting should send a summary (up to 600 words) of their work to SSITORF(a)lse.ac.uk. Those who are interested in participating without a presentation should only apply for attendance at the same email address. As space is limited, places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The closing date for applications is by the 5th of march of 2007. "A New Literacies Sampler" - full text online.

Hello everyone-- A New Literacies Sampler was published earlier this year, and, in the spirit of open access, the publishers, Peter Lang, have very kindly granted permission to run the final page proofs of A New Literacies Sampler online. The chapters authors have likewise agreed enthusiastically to have the book available as an open access resource. The book comprises a collection of research studies that focus on new literacies, and includes chapters on wireless laptop classrooms, live action role play, video games, popular youth-oriented websites, blogs, fanfiction, collaborative writing using IM, discussion fora etc, and online memes. web 2.0 discussion references

Thanks everyone for the lively discussion of Web 2.0. It is always fascinating when “definition” discussions occur on this list. My assessment of the discussion, along with the materials provided, is that the term Web 2.0 is inadequate to describe the phenomena that many of us are grappling to articulate in our research. That said, I would also argue that there is a collection of socio-technical interaction that warrants new analysis and perhaps a new category. The other competing collector-name(s) referenced in this discussion were “social software” or “social networking”. I like these better than web 2.0 but they still seem lacking. It is interesting to recall a number of similar definition debates on AoIR-l over the last couple of years. For example, there were significant challenges to terms such as cyberspace, Internet, Web, Internet research, new media, and probably many more. I suspect these terms are still somewhat contentious. However, this fluid state of meaning (and/both) is in part what makes the field so interesting. See below for a list of citations/references/blogs submitted in the Web 2.0 discussion. Note that authors of accepted papers are expected to attend the conference and present the paper, otherwise publication will be canceled. Accepted research papers will be provided as part of the conference proceedings.
