Those of you interested in or teaching about politics and the net may be interested in this video (http://doleinstituteblog.org/104/) of a panel I attended this week where 5 prominent political bloggers (representing RedState, DailyKos, MyDD, Ankle Biting Pundits, and Powerline) engaged in a discussion with David Perlmutter (KU Journalism prof with a forthcoming book on the topic) about the role of blogs in presidential campaigning. It was really interesting, and I could see making this required viewing for students (there were sure a lot of them there!). Nancy

Hi Everyone, I'm trying to trace the development of a FAQ on MPEG that circulated on usenet starting in 1994. I've done a search on google groups but I'm wondering if there is a more powerful or definitive tool. Google seems pretty hit or miss as I can find some stuff from that period, but there are other things from 1994 that I know were there then that I can't find now. I'd appreciate suggestions from anyone who's doing usenet history. Thanks. --Jonathan

IPTV Uses and Gratifications - Looking for other populations to collect data from The following online survey will be conducted with college students and we are interested in comparing results with other college student populations. Thus, we would appreciate any help accessing college student samples (or youth between the ages of 18 - 25). Our goal is to have all data collected by June 1, 2007 as we will also be submitting a proposal. We will provide a link to the online survey and can assist with any Institutional Review Board (i.e., Human Subjects Committee) requests. Also, if extra credit will be given to students, we will be sure to capture relevant information (e.g., student name and/or ID number, course, instructor, etc.). Please let us know what information you need. In exchange for your assistance, we will provide access to the complete data set and are open to future discussion of co-authoring papers. ABSTRACT: Research suggests that increased use of the internet can displace television viewing (Ferguson & Perse, 2000; Lee & Kuo 2002). However, now that television and video content can now be accessed via the internet, are young adults accessing this content online instead of accessing television programming via the traditional television set? Indeed, many networks now provide free access to television programs via the internet. Other forms of television and video content can also be accessed online for free and at the viewer's leisure (e.g., extra unaired footage on program websites; clips for upcoming episodes; video content posted by internet users). Are these forms of IPTV content (i.e., television content that, instead of being delivered through traditional formats and cabling, is received by the viewer through the technologies used for computer networks) being utilized by young adults, particularly college students? If so, what needs are fulfilled by this new media hybrid? Utilizing the uses and gratifications perspective, we posit three research questions: RQ1: What are the primary needs fulfilled by viewing IPTV content? RQ2: Does viewing IPTV content displace traditional television viewing? RQ3: Are demographic characteristics, television access/use, internet access/use, and leisure time related to increased viewing of IPTV content? On the World Wide Web, empowered consumers (Urban, 2005) are now not simply consuming content produced by firms, but also participating in the generation of content, in a variety of forms (e.g., blogs, consumer reviews, user-generated videos). Despite this new trend, we are only beginning to understand the theoretical implications of user-generated content and its place in interactive advertising. At this point, very little is known about the motivation of customers who produce user-generated content, the effectiveness of such content in swaying consumer attitudes, and how firms can successfully utilize such avenues to reach online consumers. Initial research claims that uploaders are creative consumers (Berthon, Pitt, McCarthy and Kates 2007) and not lead users (Von Hippel 1986). However, further theoretical and empirical study on this topic is warranted. User-generated content is also of great interest to practitioners. Advertisers are struggling to find out how they can incorporate user-generated content into their campaigns. Some companies have encouraged users to create advertisements- with mixed results. Many industry executives are still not convinced of the effectiveness of encouraging user-generated content and fear negative reactions from users. RESEARCH TOPICS This special issue is interested in a wide variety of theoretical and empirical lines of inquiry into user-generated content. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): Appropriate advertising models and strategies for user-generated content Motivation of uploaders and downloaders of user-generated content Impact of uploading and downloading user-generated content on brand attitudes, identity and image User-generated content and online community Privacy and intellectual property issues in user-generated content SUBMISSION INFORMATION Submitted manuscripts will be subject to a double-blind peer review process and must not have been published or accepted for publication or currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Web 2.0 – “the machine is us…”

Greetings all, This 5-minute video was recently posted on YouTube, by Michael Wesch at Kansas State University, and provides a really cool introduction to Web 2.0. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gmP4nk0EOE In the run up to the Vancouver abstract deadline I talked with a number of colleagues about Web 2.0 research. Although we seemed to have an implicit agreement on the definition of Web 2.0, based on O’Reilly’s technology / functionality / commercial oriented definition, it appears that a 'formal' definition is still very much in progress. From a research definition perspective, I’m looking forward to the AoIR-8 presentations in Vancouver, where a Web 2.0 definition will surely expand and evolve. From a pedagogical perspective, I will likely use Wesch's video as an introduction into Web 2.0 discussion, and then perhaps supplement it with the O’Reilly piece. http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/oreilly/tim/news/2005/09/30/what-is- web-20.html I’m interested in how others are defining/teaching Web 2.0. Couch Internet Research Award 2007 A student award competition Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.org The Carl Couch Center issues an annual call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that (1) apply symbolic interactionist approaches to Internet studies, (2) demonstrate interactive relationships between social interaction and communication technologies as advocated by Couch, and/or (3) develop symbolic interactionist concepts in new directions. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of Symbolic Interactionist approaches and concepts and Couch's theses, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Dr. Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Dr. Katherine M. Clegg Smith, Johns Hopkins University Dr. Lori Kendall, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Dr. Dennis Waskul, Minnesota State University, Mankato Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top three papers will receive Couch Awards to be presented at the 2007 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) in Vancouver, BC.
