Dear Allan - I don't have time to dig out exact papers, but the online journal _Internet Research & Networking Applications_ might be helpful. A lot of good applied studies there. They look at this kind of thing. I would also take a look at Steve Lawrence's stuff. I looked for something newer than this Lawrence, S. (2002). Online or invisible? from Nature (incomplete citation, sorry) There are people working around Lawrence in webmetrics I thought it was called. http://modelingtheweb.com/ is also an old paper but I think it's approaching what you're looking for unless I've misunderstood your question. Permissions for web images that no longer exist

Hi all, I've run up against a problem that has my publisher stumped as well. If you're publishing a book or journal article and want to use pictures from a Web site, and you have the pictures but the site is no longer in existence, do you need permission? How would you handle this? And also, what is the site still exists, but all emails to the authors of the site bounce? Any help or pointers of where to look would be greatly appreciated. thanks! Hi Mia -- This is a tough one. It depends in large measure on how risk averse your publisher is. Copyright liability is strict, so in the absence of explicit permission, the only safe route is not to use the materials, and many publishers will demand you go that route, and/or demand that you indemnify them. I see that a couple of people have opined that the use might be fair. That is possible, and my personal sympathies lie in that direction, but you won't know until the matter is in front of a judge. Also, fair use exists ONLY in the U.S., so if the publication or distribution of the materials is international in scope you will have to look country by country at whatever local exemptions exist (e.g., under fair dealing provisions in Canada or the UK, user privelege provisions in EU nations, etc.). Sorry that there's no good or easy answer here. DLB P.S. modest correction in CFP for e-games

Charlie Breindahl has helpfully caught and pointed out a bothersome problem in the CFP for a special issue on e-games recently posted to this list, namely, in the sentence: For example, are concerns with illicit sexuality in games primarily only an issue for U.S. (puritanical) parents, while European parents are more concerned about violence, while parents in Asian countries are concerned about Š? The "Š" is an interesting and suggestive machine "translation" of "..." in the original file. The point was to simply ask, what do parents in Asian countries worry about with regard to their children playing e-games (if anything) - not to assert that they worry about Š. And what might "Š" mean? I'm sure it means something - but my mind boggles at the possibilities. Suggestions welcome - and apologies for the problem and any confusion it may have caused.
