There is an element of geography that seems to have been removed from this equation. The measurement of broadband coverage in Korea and Japan is being compared on the same basis as the amount of physical (geographical) coverage in the US. Vast areas of open plains, deserts, national forests, etc. are included in the broadband measure...to countries where the population distribution is more compact and the land area is significanly smaller. The statistics make great headlines and wonderful 'sky is falling' rhetoric, but there is far less substance than the rankings imply. There is quit a bit of stuff that argues the Internet question back and forth in the US. Norman Nie and Robert Kraut discuss some of the negative sides while Kavanaugh and Jim Katz/Ron Rice (among others) report on the positive dimensions of Internet use. People who use the mobile telephone particularly for texting, more reported increased types of informal social contact. With mobile telephony the key thing seems to be that it provides ready access to social networks for the individual and thus lowers the threshold for inclusion. Other research (for example Reid and Reid have found with a small sample that SMS use tends to make smaller but more intense social relationships. I hope that this helps. One effect that we have observed in the EU's e-lining project is that the mobile telephone facilitates an increase in what we call informal social capital, that is not social capital associated with participation in formal social groups, but rather the informal social interactions of everyday life. We actually have a paper out on this. We were not able to observe the same effects of this vis-à-vis the internet. This work is being pursued in the SOCQUIT project (SOcial Capital, QUality of life and IT). Demos and open source

The influential "think tank" Demos has produced a new paper on open source. http://www.demos.co.uk/catalogue/wideopen/ Well the main point they are making is that the concept of open source is a very powerful one and can be extended to other realms outside operating systems and programs. They are very interested in an "open" approach to government. This is amusing in a way because Demos is linked with the government in the UK which is not open at all, except this week when it seems to be "leaking" like a sieve over the lies they told about the bloody Iraq war. Re the "imagined audience" of bloggers, "reader response" research in literature, etc. has dealt with this since pre-internet times. Worth checking. (Sorry, I don't have any references. scholar.Google and ye shall find.) However, given that most blogs make audience feedback easy, there may well be some differences with blogs. My hunch is that blog-audience response is the usual reverse J-curve: a few people respond a lot. Hence bloggers may be mistaken as to who their audiences are if they only pay attention to their relatively few feedbackers. Never did any research on this. Just my .02. YMMV. Interesting suggestion, but unclear what the point may be. Copyright liability is strict in the U.S. and other jurisditions with which I am familiar; for liability to attach it doesn't really matter whether you engaged in good faith efforts to find the copyright holder or not. In the U.S., once you've lost an infringement suit, I suppose that the paper trail might allow you to avoid an increased damage award for willful infringement under the 504(c)(2) statutory damages provision. But at the same time it suggests that you knew or should have known the material was protected by copyright, so that you coudn't raise the 504(c) "innocent infringer" defense to get lowered damages. In fact, it may be that the paper trail *demonstrates* that the infringement was willful. So this practice appears to cut both ways, not necessarily to your advantage. DLB P.S. Disclaimer again. Heilesen and Sisse Siggaard Jensen, Roskilde University, Denmark. INTRODUCTION Designing for Networked Communications is to be a book about how we plan, use and understand the products and the dynamic social processes or tasks upon which depend some of the most vital innovations - social as well as technological - in the knowledge society. Networked communication is proliferating. To-day, not only are existing mediated forms of communication being remediated in electronic form, but also hitherto direct forms of communication in complicated social settings are being supplemented or even replaced by computer mediated communication (CMC). We are coming to depend on CMC-products. As a result, the way they function and the way we use them inevitably influences or even determines how we communicate and how we think about communication. Designing products for CMC may be seen as a cycle, where tasks require the creation of artefacts, and where artefacts condition modifications of tasks. The tasks that we wish to examine are processes of communication between individuals by means of computer networks (within and across organizations) as well as the dissemination of information from a sender to a target group. The artefacts include physical networks, hardware, software as well as the manipulation of symbols in the act of communicating. Designing is to be understood in a broad sense as (1) the underlying scheme for the planning, functioning and development of an artefact, (2) the actual arrangement and functionality of various elements of the artefact, (3) the development of strategies and adaptations required for performing tasks by means of the artefact in the given social context and subject to certain basic conditions, and (4) the development of creative strategies for social innovation and the identification of new tasks to be performed by means of a redesign of existing artefacts or with new artefacts. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THE BOOK The book is meant to further our understanding of ICT-design processes by identifying strategies employed both by developers and users in the dynamic processes of creating and using artefacts. The various chapters will present and reflect on relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area. Bridging the fields of HCI-design in Computer Science and Computer-mediated Communication in Communication Studies, the book will represent an interdisciplinary approach that is valuable for stimulating unconventional thinking and a creative exchange in and across two important academic and professional fields. THE TARGET AUDIENCE Professionals, researchers and students working in the fields of Communication, Computer Science (in particular HCI and system development), E-learning and Computer Supported Collaborative Work. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by October 31, 2005. All submitted chapters will be reviewed by at least two reviewers on a blind review basis.
