AoIRers, The British International Studies Association (BISA) International Communications Working Group is organizing a number of panels for BISA's annual conference, which will take place at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, 19-21 December 2005. Papers should address the broad theme of 'Communication and/in International Conflict.' Papers exploring the role of the Internet in international conflict are particularly welcome. Dear AoIRers, A colleague and I recently started teaching in a course called "Content is King". Our focus lies on the effects of the digital revolution on the future of on line publishing and on line journalism. Apologies for duplicate postings - and any comments and suggestions from this group especially welcome! -- charles ess == Interdisciplinary Graduate Course Bridging Cultures: Computer Ethics, Culture, and ICT Place: NTNU, Trondheim, Norway Time: May 23rd 27th 2005 Lecturer: Charles Ess, distinguished research professor, Interdisciplinary Studies at Drury University, USA and professor II at NTNU (Globalization and Program for Applied Ethics). Course overview The graduate course "Bridging cultures" takes up many of the central ethical challenges that arise in conjunction with information and communication technologies. The title "Bridging cultures" is intended to signify problems regarding the relation between cultural diversity and global information technologies, as well as the bridging of humanistic and scientific disciplines. The course will primarily focus on three interrelated aspects: 1. Developing a basic "ethical toolkit" that will provide participants with a range of terms and approaches to ethical analysis and decision-making with regard to common issues in computer and information sciences. This includes notions of professional responsibilities of programmers, HCI designers, etc. 2. Disclosing how cultural values and communicative preferences are embedded in the design and implementation of Computer-mediated Communication technologies. Here we will explore a basic set of conceptual tools for analysing various dimensions of cultural values and communicative preferences, in order to develop guidelines for "best practices" in design and implementation of Information and Communication Technologies. 3. Examining how the cultures of the humanities and the sciences, including computer and information sciences, as academic disciplines may be bridged, thereby bringing ethics together with computer and information science. Our hope here is to build bridges between these disciplines that will foster further interdisciplinary collaboration. Deadline for registration is May 6th, 2005. Technologies like wikis, blogs, and home-brewed video and audiocasts, to name a few, together with new models of peer-production usher in new modes of knowledge production and dissemination, calling into question our understandings of concepts like authority, truth, and censorship. As we know, this change is not without resistance; the juggernauts of the media industry are using their full arsenal to fight what they perceive to be a third world-war, often focusing on lobbying efforts in an attempt to regulate through law. While much has been written about this transition, little attention has been given by science studies scholars to the public policy implications of this phenomenon. This panel will seek to explore the way by which what could otherwise be controversial, invisible, secret, or anomalous informational artifacts are being co-opted and regulated through laws, markets, and repeated attempts to influence norms. The organizers seek contributions from a variety of scholars addressing empirical as well as theoretical aspects of this topic. I'm hoping to tap into the collective expertise of the group. I'm working on a chapter about using interviews to study online social practices. I'd like to hear about articles or books that you have found particularly useful in this regard. These could be either specifically pieces about methodology (online or offline, related to the Internet or not) or examples of studies using interviews that you consider exemplary. Since I'm most familiar with U.S. research and examples, I would particularly welcome examples from other cultural contexts or with a more international scope. Thanks for any info! I would call some of these methods listed in Batinic, et al., "social psychology" but there's lots of room for exploration. I don't specifically remember online interviews but their techniques were generally very useful for a variety of online data collection. >From the publisher's blurb: "The studies reported utilize Web-based questionnaires, Web experiments, observations of virtual worlds, case narrations, content analyses, and analysis of mailing-lists and other log data." I'm writing up a lit review, and am talking about ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) in one section. Two questions I can't seem to find the answer to that I would greatly appreciate the group's help on: 1. What is the original source of this term? 2. Is there a source for what are the defining characteristics of ICTs? Has someone written on this? Couch Internet Research Award 2005 A student award competition Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.org The Carl Couch Center issues an annual call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that (1) apply symbolic interactionist approaches to Internet studies, (2) demonstrate interactive relationships between social interaction and communication technologies as advocated by Couch, and/or (3) develop symbolic interactionist concepts in new directions. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of Symbolic Interactionist approaches and concepts and Couch’s theses, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Dr. Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, IA, chair Dr. Katherine M. Clegg Smith, Johns Hopkins University Dr. Lori Kendall, SUNY-Purchase, New York Dr. Jodi O'Brien, Seattle University Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. The top three papers will receive Couch Awards to be presented at the 2005 International Conference of the Association of Internet Researchers in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
