Collaborative online dictionaries (etc.)

Sincerest apologies if this has gone out before; I seem to be having trouble getting it to go through. Dear AoIRers, I'm working on a project looking at open content/collaborative reference sites, namely English-language dictionaries, such as Urban Dictionary and Wiktionary. Two questions: 1. Does anyone know of other such online dictionaries, which allow users themselves to define the entries? (I've googled fruitlessly.) 2. Does anyone have any references (articles, chapters, etc.) about collaborative reference projects? More specifically about the possibilities they pose for "democratization" (buzzword) of knowledge/language? I can take responses off-list. folder and file names as direct speech

Hi all, In recent weeks I've noticed an interesting phenomenon on our large and volatile university shared drive (a "scratch" drive accessible to all faculty and students, which is wiped clean once a week). Students are using folder names and file names as public announcements. For example, a student might put a folder on the scratch drive called "Last Samurai here plz", asking any student who has the film to upload it to there for her to copy. There's one today called "plzzzz we need the new version of adobe photoshop". There's also a folder called "movies", containing (among other things) a text file with the following name: "can u put ur requests in this (Text document and not folders) cuz we dont know which folder contains something or not and have to enter each ONE.txt" People also use the drive for backing up their data for short periods (e.g. for transfer between computers); last week I found a folder on the scratch drive called "Please don't touch my documents". Of course I opened it :-) and found just one subfolder called "I'm warning you". Opening that I got a single subsubfolder called "Shame on you", and within that was one called "everything", which contained the student's data. Do institutions in other parts of the world have a drive like this? Do similar things happen there? David Palfreyman Dubai :-D

This line of inquiry extends a research stream of the late Rob Kling, a pioneer in social informatics studies who strived for over 30 years to make social issues central to discussions about computing and information systems. "Within the past decade, social informatics research has grown to encompass a widening and interdisciplinary interest in studies that carefully examine the ways in which information and communications technologies (ICTs) are bound up in everyday social and organizational structures. It draws researchers who focus on the inter-relationships among people, their institutional and cultural contexts, and their uses of ICTs. This focus on 'ICT use in context' diverts some attention from the task at hand to pay more careful attention to the power relations that shape the task and the setting, as well as the roles of the social actors who use ICTs to perform their situated tasks. "For this inaugural theme issue, we were particularly interested in presenting empirical examinations of ICTs that carefully depict and theorize about the cumulative influences of local histories on ICT use, with emphasis on the everyday aspects of living with digital information in the home, in the workplace, in research labs, in public places, and other social settings. MultiMediaStations in Austria

Dear List, That might be of interest: Telekom Austria intends to convert 1.300 public phone boxes into MultiMediaStations with access to the Internet. One hour surfing will cost 6 Euro, one text-email 10 Euro Cent. The governmental website www.help.gv.at, which offers documents and information on working and living in Austria can be accessed without costs.(http://www.help.gv.at/Content.Node/HELP-FC.html). In providing free access, the government aims to close the digital divide within the Austrian society and to foster the e-government initiative.
