About 10% of the world's population has access to the Internet but 97% of web sites are designed in English. If you need reference for these statistics let me know but unless we recognize the importance and validity of other languages in cyberspace, we can find ourselves on the receiving end of the global spectrum. If anything, we should encourage research and scholarly contribution in other, lesser known (to the English-speaking world) languages. The University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor to be cross-appointed to the Communication, Culture and Information Technology (CCIT) program and a department in the humanities or social sciences. Hi Jakob, <I admit that we might miss important work and exclude some persons by having English as a <working language but the costs of including more languages are too big, in my opinion. I find that every time we talk about minority participation in anything, someone brings up arguments such as yours. But just think for a moment, if all the money spent on the war in Iraq (200 billion!!) were devoted to to excavation of historical artifacts in this ancient land with the involvement of the United Nations . Sounds bizarre? War doesnt? Ok, so we dont have the Pentagon budget. Can we afford the loss? I think that our priorities should be put first, then the money will follow, not the other way around. The discussion about other languages sometimes seems a bit bizarre. English is (and remains) the lingua franca of academic work. Spanish might achieve a similar position over time but for now, it is English. I admit that we might miss important work and exclude some persons by having English as a working language but the costs of including more languages are too big, in my opinion. And what is the problem. I am a Scandinavian and we always have to do a lot of things in two languages: English and our own.
