ACM UMAP 2024 - Call for Doctoral Consortium Papers
ACM UMAP 2024: The 32nd ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization
Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy
July 1-4, 2024
The 32nd International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation, and Personalization (ACM UMAP 2024) is the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users or groups of users, and that collect, represent, and model user information. The ACM UMAP 2024 Doctoral Consortium (DC) will take place as part of the conference. The DC provides an opportunity for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests under the guidance of distinguished researchers and industry practitioners from the field.
Doctoral students are invited to apply for presenting their research to experienced scholars who will provide constructive feedback and advice. Students should consider participating in the DC if they are at least one year away from completing their dissertation at the time of the event, but after having settled on a research area or dissertation topic.
This forum will provide doctoral students with an opportunity to:
* Present and discuss their research ideas to experienced scholars in a supportive, formative, and yet critical environment.
* Explore and develop their research interests under the guidance of distinguished researchers from the field who will provide constructive feedback and advice.
* Explore career pathways available after completing their doctoral degree.
* Network and build collaborations with other members of the community.
Students are asked to submit a brief proposal outlining their doctoral research (see detailed requirements below), which will be evaluated by the doctoral consortium committee. Good quality applications will be selected for presentation at a DC session as part of the conference. Each student with an accepted submission will be assigned a mentor who will provide feedback on the student’s work. A mentoring session will take place during the conference, and the DC students are expected to attend.
** Important Dates **
Paper Submission: March 28, 2024
Notification: April 26, 2024
Camera-ready Submission (TAPS system): May 9, 2024
Conference: July 1 – 4, 2024
DC Day: July TBD, 2024 (it will happen in one of the conference days)
Note: The submissions deadlines are at 11:59 pm AoE (Anywhere on Earth)<https://www.timeanddate.com/time/zones/aoe> time.
** Submission **
All submissions must be written in English. Submissions should be a single PDF document consisting of: (i) the recommendation letter, (ii) the research description, and (iii) the curriculum vitae. This PDF document should be submitted electronically through the EasyChair submission system, https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=umap24, by selecting the “UMAP24 Doctoral Consortium Papers” track.
** Length and Formatting **
Format and Content Guidelines. Consult the ACM UMAP 2024 general call for full and short papers<https://www.um.org/umap2024/call-for-full-and-short-papers/> concerning the key topics of this call as well. Each proposal should be a single PDF document, with three required components: (i) a recommendation letter, (ii) a description of your doctoral path, (iii) and a curriculum vitae. If you are unable to obtain a letter of recommendation from your dissertation advisor, please include a short explanation. Specifically, for each component, please consider the following instructions:
1. Letter of Recommendation (from your primary dissertation advisor, in any format):
* Describe your interaction with the student and your assessment of the quality of their work. Explain how the ACM UMAP 2024 doctoral consortium would benefit this student at this point in their doctoral program, as well as the contributions you expect the student to make to the group.
* The DC targets students who have a clear idea of their research plans and have started their research but have not yet executed a majority of their research. Please explain the structure of your student’s program and their expected level of progress by July 2024.
* Recall that students who are unable to obtain a letter of recommendation from their dissertation advisor (or the equivalent) should instead include a short explanation and a description of where the student is in their doctoral progress and the anticipated timeline.
1. Research description (6 pages at most plus additional pages for references; figures, tables, proofs, appendixes, acknowledgments, and any other content count toward the page limit): using a single-column manuscript formatted according to the guidelines discussed below, please include the following:
* Your name, advisor(s) name(s), and the university where you are conducting your doctoral work.
* Current year of study and projected completion date (plus information about the regulations of your doctoral program regarding length, any part-time study, etc.).
* Context and motivation for your research.
* Key related work that frames your research.
* Specific research objectives, goals, or questions.
* Research approach, methods, and rationale.
* Results and contributions to date.
* Expected next steps.
* Dissertation status and long-term goals.
1. Curriculum vitae (2 pages at most, in any format): a concise summary of your current curriculum vitae, including research publications. Clearly separate published papers from those under review or in press.
Please ensure that your submission is complete and conforms to the format and content guidelines above. Submissions that do not meet these requirements will be desk-rejected.
*Single-Blind Policy*. Proposals will be reviewed single-blind and, therefore, do not need to be anonymized before submission.
*Template for the Research Description*. Following the ACM Publication Workflow<https://www.acm.org/publications/taps/word-template-workflow>, the research description component should be arranged based on the new ACM single-column format. Instructions for students are given below:
* LaTeX (use \documentclass[manuscript, review, anonymous]{acmart} in the sample-authordraft.tex file for single-column). Please carefully follow the ACM’s instructions for preparing your article with LaTeX<https://authors.acm.org/proceedings/production-information/preparing-your-a…>.
* Overleaf (use \documentclass[manuscript,review,anonymous]{acmart} for single-column). Please carefully follow the ACM’s instructions for preparing your article with Overleaf<https://authors.acm.org/proceedings/production-information/overleaf>.
* Word. Please carefully follow the ACM’s instructions for preparing your article with Microsoft Word<https://authors.acm.org/proceedings/production-information/preparing-your-a…>
Should you have any questions or issues going through the instructions above, please contact support at acmtexsupport(a)aptaracorp.com<mailto:acmtexsupport@aptaracorp.com> for LaTeX and Microsoft Word inquiries.
*Accessibility*. DC students are strongly encouraged to provide “alt text” (alternative text) for floats (images, tables, etc.) in their content so that readers with disabilities can be given descriptive information for these floats that are important to the work. The descriptive text will be displayed in place of a float if the float cannot be loaded. This benefits the author and it broadens the reader base for the author’s work. Moreover, the alt text provides in-depth float descriptions to search engine crawlers, which helps to properly index these floats. Additionally, authors should follow the ACM Accessibility Recommendations for Publishing in Color and SIG ACCESS guidelines on describing figures<https://authors.acm.org/journals/accessibility-recommendations-for-publishi…>.
*Submission Policy*. Please consider the following ACM’s publication policies:
1. “By submitting your article to an ACM Publication, you are hereby acknowledging that you and your co-authors are subject to all ACM Publications Policies<https://www.acm.org/publications/policies>, including ACM’s new Publications Policy on Research Involving Human Participants and Subjects<https://www.acm.org/publications/policies/research-involving-human-particip…>. Alleged violations of this policy or any ACM Publications Policy will be investigated by ACM and may result in a full retraction of your paper, in addition to other potential penalties, as per ACM Publications Policy.”
2. “Please ensure that you and your co-authors obtain an ORCID ID<https://orcid.org/register>, so you can complete the publishing process for your accepted paper. ACM has been involved in ORCID from the start and we have recently made a commitment to collect ORCID IDs from all of our published authors<https://authors.acm.org/author-resources/orcid-faqs>. We are committed to improve author discoverability, ensure proper attribution and contribute to ongoing community efforts around name normalization; your ORCID ID will help in these efforts.”
*Camera-ready Information*. Accepted proposals (i.e., the research description component) will require a further revision in order to meet the requirements and the page limits of the camera-ready format required by ACM. Instructions for the preparation of the camera-ready versions of the papers will be provided after acceptance. We strongly recommend the usage of LaTeX/Overleaf for the camera-ready papers to minimize the extent of reformatting. Users of the Word template must use either the version for Microsoft Word for Windows, Macintosh Office 2011, or Macintosh Office 2016 (other formats such as Open Office, etc., are not admitted) for the camera-ready submission to avoid incompatibility issues.
** Registration and Presentation Policy **
Each accepted proposal in the doctoral consortium track must be accompanied by a distinct full author registration, completed by the doctoral student by the early registration date cut-off. Each accepted proposal must be presented in person in the doctoral consortium session to be included in the conference proceedings, published by ACM and available via the ACM Digital Library. The official publication date is when the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks before the first day of UMAP 2024. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
** Financial Support **
ACM UMAP has a long history of supporting students who want to attend the conference. Doctoral students of the accepted DC proposals will have higher priority for the ACM UMAP grant applications. Please periodically consult the page that summarizes grants and support opportunities, available at https://www.um.org/umap2024/grants-and-support/.
** Doctoral Consortium Chairs **
* Martijn C. Willemsen, Eindhoven University of Technology & JADS, The Netherlands
* Styliani Kleanthous, CYENS CoE and Open University of Cyprus, Cyprus
* Rodrygo Santos, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil

Dear all,
For many of you reading this, the past few days on the AoIR listserv have
been intense and trying. After many hours of discussion, the Executive
Committee of AoIR with the extended support of the four Past Presidents,
have the following to say.
To start, a technical note: we have just released another batch of messages
from the moderation queue. These will be the last messages on this subject
in the listserv for now, as we aim to restore the conversation to a place
of community rather than the disunity we have seen. Also, we have had
reports of readers who identify with different sides of the conflict who
have felt threatened by the discourse, and afraid to speak their minds. No
scholar of the internet, and no one who has been in similar discussions in
the past, will have been especially surprised at the dynamic of the
discussion. The list will therefore remain pre-moderated for now, but we
shall let through new messages (about the usual AoIR things) as quickly as
we can. Questions about this can be addressed to prez(a)aoir.org.
We condemn in the strongest possible terms the loss of civilian life as the
result of Hamas’s attack, as well as Israel’s military operations, and we
also condemn expressions of antisemitism and Islamophobia since the
violence unfolded. As academics, the destruction and displacement of
students, scholars and their institutions is of special concern to us.
Witnessing our community members, both Israelis and Palestinians, being
deprived of their academic homes is a source of profound sorrow. We
acknowledge that it may take years for communities to rebuild their
infrastructure and recover from the devastation. We urge you to offer
assistance to your colleagues within our community and beyond. We yearn for
a safe return to the lecture hall, the seminar room and the lab for
everyone. We call for the guarantee of free and critical speech, and we
mourn the loss of life, including those of students and colleagues working
in higher education, throughout this terrible conflict. We send our
solidarity to all those affected by these events, especially education
staff and students.
It was clear from very early on in the discussions on the listserv that
there is no consensus on how to move forward. Among those who have signed
this message (the exec), there are also differences of opinion, including
what a potential statement should include and the procedure for reaching
community agreement.
This discussion has highlighted that we do not have processes in place for
if and how AoIR might make statements on geopolitical issues. This is
something that we have extremely rarely done, but it is something we commit
to addressing at the next meeting of the Executive Committee in a few
weeks. Moreover, in the coming days, we will set up a way to invite your
input on shaping any future procedure.
Nicholas John (President), Sarah T. Roberts (Vice President), the Executive
Committee (Sam Sruay, Gabriel Pierra, Sophie Bishop, Ariadna
Matamoros-Fernández, Job Mwaura, Tom Divon)
Past Presidents Tama Leaver (2021-2023), Lynn Schofield Clark (2019-2021),
Axel Bruns (2017-2021), Jenny Stromer-Galley (2015-2017)

Dear all,
I am about to release the final set of messages, about 24 in number.
After this, I shall post a message from the executive committee and four
past presidents.

> You write of your worry that continuing this debate and publishing a statement might ?cost us our community.? I think the AOIR Executive should take very seriously the reality that choosing to ignore the war in Gaza by not issuing a statement would also be divisive to the AOIR community. It silences the many members who labour under the well-documented (UN statement: https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2023/11/speaking-out-gaza-israel-mu…) penalties of censure, blacklists and firing for expressing support for Palestinians and for criticizing Israeli policies and military strategies. The fracture, I fear, has already happened. Silence won?t fix that.
>
> I would hope that every academic on this listserv could at least agree that the Israeli military?s destruction of Gaza?s university system, the killing of so many Palestinian academics and the killing of an unprecedented number of journalists deserves harsh censure from the global academic community, including from Israeli academics. As I noted in my previous email, war crimes and genocide are illegal and immoral, no matter the context. What?s more, they destroy the victims and demean the perpetrators. As such, condemning such atrocities is an act of loyalty to the state, though it may not feel that way in the moment. The region?s history may be complex, but these specific actions are not.
>
> There is room to condemn Hamas? shockingly brutal attack while also recognizing that Israel itself has agency, and has committed many war crimes in its prosecution of the war. If AOIR as a community cannot even find it within itself to condemn such extraordinary (and relevant to us) atrocities against our fellow academics and students, it will send a clear message to AOIR?s members about whose voices count in this community, and whose don?t.
>
> On a technical note, my last email took almost eight hours to appear. Is this normal? I was very surprised at the very long lead time. This doesn?t seem to be the case for every email that appeared on the main thread.

Re: [Air-L] Difficult Discussion: What's Missing -- Digest, Vol 234, Issue 29

The call for some sort of “response” to Israel’s actions might have some legitimacy if:
1. Previously we heard similar calls against China’s cultural genocide against the Uighurs.
2. Ditto: any call to stop the slaughter of HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of Africans in the Sudan.
3. Some mention of Hamas’s Oct. 7 atrocities, VIDEO-documented by THEIR OWN FIGHTERS.
4. Some mention of the fact that in contravention of all international law, Hamas abducted and is holding hostage for over 3 months Israeli civilian women, men, and children.
5. Hamas hid massive amounts of armaments in hospitals, schools, kindergartens, and private civilian homes (e.g., under baby cribs!!) – again, against Geneva Convention laws of warfare. Thus, where exactly is Israel supposed to fight? Just on roads or parks?
6. Israel sent messages (flyers and phone calls!) to all Gazan civilians in North Gaza to get out and move south in order NOT to be in the line of fire when the IDF attacked Hamas soldiers. This is the very opposite of intended genocide.
7. If already people here mention “genocide”, then what do you call Hamas’ Charter that calls for the elimination not of Israelis but of all JEWS? And after Oct. 7, their spokesman said that they will do it (Oct. 7) again and again. So who exactly is “genocidal” here?
Given that this forum is for academics, one would expect a bit more “context” in respondents’ posts – not to mention understanding and noting ALL the facts involved.

Dear all
I have been following the discussion here very closely throughout what has
been a very long day. I wish to address a couple of points from the various
posts that have been sent.
For those of you who don’t know me, I am, among other things, the President
of AoIR, Jewish, and Israeli. I have skin in the game. For some, this may
disqualify me from speaking; for others, my lived experience may be
considered relevant. If you know me, you likely know my views on the
conflict and the current government. I do not feel a need to share them
here. For the sake of openness, though, I can say that I am yet to see a
statement about the conflict that does justice to the complexities of the
situation.
My primary concern right now, therefore, is for AoIR. I think it is already
clear that it is unlikely that the AoIR community will agree on a statement
about the current situation in the Middle East. So far, the discussion has,
by and large, been pretty civil, though I am extremely concerned that it
might stop being so. Let me remind everyone of our code of conduct (
https://aoir.org/codeofconduct) and the rules of use (
https://aoir.org/mailing-lists/mailing-list-rules-and-etiquette) for the
mailing list.
On a practical note, and after conversations with the exec members who were
available today, the conversation on this list will be slowed down a bit.
Every message will get through (unless it really shouldn’t), though not
immediately. It’s 1am where I am, but tomorrow morning I will release a
bunch of messages, and will continue to do so through the day.
I know that this conflict has already cost people real friendships within
academia. It must not cost us our community.

Hi everyone,
This is a difficult message to write, and I know that it will probably open
some difficult conversations. I realised this morning that I was shying
away from having these conversations because I don’t want to create
problems for the many colleagues who I respect and am fond of within AoIR.
And while I do care about all of you, sometimes care means being brave (and
perhaps annoying) instead of being polite.
So. We need to talk about Gaza. And we need to talk about Israel. Many of
us have been speaking up individually, but our voices have more power when
we bring them together. I have signed on to other open letters, but I think
there are also important reasons for the Association of Internet
Researchers to take a stance.
*What I am suggesting?*
I am asking for us to have a discussion about some form of public
solidarity with Palestinians who are currently under attack, and with those
within Israel and around the world who are speaking up against the actions
of the Israeli state.
It might involve a statement of solidarity for those who are under attack
in Gaza and other parts of Palestine, and for people engaged in non-violent
resistance to the actions of the Israeli state. It might involve joining
the international call for an academic boycott of Israeli institutions
complicit in the ongoing violence against Palestinians (the guidelines for
which are available here <https://bdsmovement.net/academic-boycott>). It
might involve a commitment to ask our own academic institutions to cut
their ties with the Israeli state. It might take some other format.
*Why now?*
There are many acts of violence and oppression happening around the world.
Why should our academic organisation speak up on this, specifically?
Because the scale of the violence is immense and continuing
<https://www.oxfam.org/en/press-releases/daily-death-rate-gaza-higher-any-ot…>,
exceeding that of any recent armed conflict. There is no end in sight, and
the deliberate restriction of food, water, and medicine means that people
within Gaza face starvation and disease as well as bombing and other forms
of direct violence.
Because many of us are based in countries which are prepared to condemn
other atrocities, but are unwilling to issue more than lukewarm statements
about the Israeli state’s violence against Palestinians. For example,
Australia’s
foreign minister Penny Wong
<https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/jan/17/penny-wong-meets-isr…>
“has met with Israeli relatives of hostages held by Hamas and assured them
that she will continue to use Australia’s voice to call for the immediate,
unconditional and safe return of all hostages” and affirmed Australian
support for Israel, while only “raising concerns” about the humanitarian
situation in Gaza. Australia has also supported the US/UK bombing of Yemen
<https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/jan/12/australia-military-s…>
in retailation for their disruption of shipping routes to Israel. Where our
own governments will not speak up for human rights, we have an obligation
to raise our voices.
Because AoIR is <https://aoir.org/diversity-and-inclusivity/> “is committed
to the most fundamental principles of academic freedom, equality of
opportunity, and human dignity.” The last university in Gaza has now been
destroyed
<https://www.thenational.scot/news/24059315.israel-destroys-last-university-…>
by the Israeli army, along with many schools. Students from these
universities feel their loss keenly
<https://wearenotnumbers.org/lament-for-the-universities/>, even while
trying to stay alive through bombings and the denial of their basic human
needs. Countless Palestinian academics
<https://wearenotnumbers.org/tributes-to-refaat-alareer-killed-dec-9-2023/>
and students
<https://wearenotnumbers.org/tributes-to-mohammed-zaher-hamo-killed-nov-24-2…>
have been killed, injured, and displaced
<https://wearenotnumbers.org/i-have-left-all-my-books-behind/>. Attacks on
Palestinian educational institutions are not new
<https://protectingeducation.org/wp-content/uploads/impact_attackeducation_p…>.
Calls for protection
<https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/03057925.2021.1987192> have
gone unheeded.
Because the digital technologies that many of us research are woven through
this conflict. Israeli authorities are using facial recognition technology
<https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2023/05/israel-opt-israeli-authoriti…>
to entrench apartheid. The Israeli military is using an “AI” system to
“generate targets”
<https://www.npr.org/2023/12/14/1218643254/israel-is-using-an-ai-system-to-f…>.
Telecommunications systems are shut down
<https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/10/27/israel-intensifies-gaza-bombardme…>,
making it difficult for people in Gaza to communicate while under attack.
Large tech companies have been providing key systems to the Israeli
government <https://notechforapartheid.com/>.
Because Israeli citizens who protest
<https://www.npr.org/2024/01/19/1225651180/israel-tel-aviv-protest-gaza-war>
the actions of their government (including on social media) face
<https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/11/12/israel-free-speech-arrests-…>
jail
<https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israeli-police-crack-down-arab-ci…>
and threats of violence
<https://www.972mag.com/israeli-protest-gaza-war-repression/>, as do those
who refuse to serve in the army
<https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20240115-israel-s-war-resisters-risk-…>.
They deserve our support and solidarity.
*Why **are we** silent?*
I do not think that AoIR has tended to position itself as a neutral or
apolitical organisation. Past conference themes
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Internet_Researchers> have
included “Revolutions” and “Decolonising the Internet”. My sense is that
there was also a response and a discussion within the organisation to the
Black Lives Matter movement, among other issues.
Of course, I am aware that academic organisations will not often respond to
international events. Perhaps the silence so far is entirely for this
reason. Perhaps we are afraid that if we speak up on this we will also be
asked to speak about Sudan, Congo, and other issues (would that be
terrible?)
However, I think that we must also acknowledge the chilling effect that
many academics and others experience specifically on the matter of Israel.
Antisemitism is a real and significant problem in the world. However, the
ongoing attempt to conflate all criticism of Israel with antisemitism is
intellectually dishonest and dangerous
<https://www.jewishvoiceforpeace.org/2023/11/09/antisemitism-dangerous/>.
It also frequently glosses over the long history of Jewish
<https://www.wrmea.org/2008-december/israel-and-judaism-the-long-and-largely…>
opposition
<https://jacobin.com/2020/07/israel-palestine-anti-zionism-history-left> to
the formation of Israel. Organisations like the ADL put forward claims that
groups like A Jewish Voice for Peace are antisemitic *because* they are
anti-Zionist. Similarly, Canary Mission lists university students,
professors, and organisations that criticise the Israeli state alongside
neo-nazi organisations like the “Daily Stormer”, conflating legitimate
criticism of the Israeli government with violent antisemitism.
I understand that many people do not want to contribute to the real
antisemitism faced by our friends, colleagues, and students face. We all
have a duty to oppose antisemitism in our communities and universities.
Perhaps that leads to a reluctance to speak out about the Israeli state’s
actions. However, I believe that we can oppose both antisemitism and
Israeli state violence. The Israeli state does not speak for, or act for,
all
<https://edition.cnn.com/2023/10/23/us/jewish-palestinian-protest-israel-gaz…>
Jewish
<https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-jewish-group-protests-eight-cities-gaza…>
people
<https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/19/jewish-protest-israel-gaza-wa…>.
We should not allow them to claim that they do.
We also must be aware that organisations like Canary Mission work hard to
impose
<https://truthout.org/articles/advocacy-for-palestinians-has-been-outright-c…>
a high
<https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2023/12/8/doxxing-students-palestine-fea…>
cost
<https://www.cuindependent.com/2023/11/05/ethnic-studies-pro-palestine-state…>
on students and teachers within universities who do speak up. A variety of
governments have also worked to ban the Boycott-Divest-Sanctions movement
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-BDS_laws>. There are therefore real
material consequences for speaking against the actions of the Israeli
state. Perhaps that is enough that we do not want to put AoIR as an
organisation, or fellow academics within AoIR, in a difficult position.
But if that’s the case, let’s at least acknowledge it. Let’s make it
visible. Let us be aware that our organisation, and its commitments to
values like diversity and inclusion
<https://aoir.org/diversity-and-inclusivity/>, are constrained and limited.
That our interest in hearing from those who are currently at the margins of
our academic spaces (as set out in the ‘revolutions’ CfP
<https://aoir.org/aoir2023/aoir2023cfp/>) does not, perhaps, extend as far
as some of us might hope.
With love, solidarity, and significant trepidation,
sky.
