Dear Air-l Subscribers, Best wishes in 2024! The JCEA (Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia, Editor in Chief Professor Dr. Han Woo Park) is putting out an active CFP for Special Issue editors and themes. We strongly encourage you to submit your proposal for a Special Issue (at least five themed papers) and forward this information to your networks. Here are the guidelines (in text). We look forward to receiving your proposals! (Further submission information can be found at https://jceasia.org/submission) The Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia aims to publish one special issue per year themed around a current topic that is particularly salient at the moment. Special issues are handled by one or more guest editors and are comprised of papers that fulfill the same criteria of quality, originality, and scientific significance that are applied to regular papers. Prospective guest editors should have a strong background and network of contacts in order to successfully solicit papers, manage the peer-review process, ensure deadlines and maintain the journal’s high publishing standards. Manuscripts for a special issue can be proposed by a guest editor or solicited by announcing a Call for Papers. Prospective guest editors must submit a formal proposal for a special issue to j.c.eastern.asia(a)gmail.com with the following information: · The title of the Special Issue. · A brief CV/s of the proposed guest editor/s. · A draft of the Call for Papers (300-500 words) that would include a statement of the Special Issue’s significance for the Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia, the likely content to be covered and a list of topics for papers that would fit within the proposed theme. · A timeline. The editors will provide specific timeframes for distributing calls for manuscripts, recruiting authors and reviewers, and reviewing submissions. The JCEA Editorial Board will consider the proposal and the proposed guest editors will be informed whether or not they will be allowed to proceed. Guest editors should inform authors that since June 2023, the JCEA has adopted an APC (article processing charge) system on a sliding scale. More information about the APC is available at https://jceasia.org/submission. Guest editors will be responsible for the submission, review, revision, and acceptance process with the assistance of the editor-in-chief and associate editors. Guest editors will also communicate deadlines and format to the contributing authors. If any conflict of interest between contributing authors, reviewers and guest editors exists, guest editor/s shall disclose that fact to the editor-in-chief to maintain the objectivity of the peer-review process. The final acceptance approval for each paper will be given by the editor-in- chief. The special issue should be completely themed with at least five papers. Guest editors will have to write a guest editorial (2-6 pages) describing the guest editor(s) intent on presenting the articles, addressing the issue at hand, and summarizing the article themes. Guest editors are not paid for their work. Call for Submissions: 20th Anniversary Issue of The Journal of Community Informatics

Dear colleagues, Please see the following call for short papers, and other types of creative submissions, in celebration of the Journal’s 20th anniversary. Call for Submissions: 20th Anniversary Issue of The Journal of Community Informatics Community informatics (CI) is the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to support community-defined development goals. It is a multidisciplinary field that includes researchers and practitioners from information studies, social work, rural sociology, public policy, urban planning, among other areas. Similar to social informatics, CI considers organizational use of ICTs across digital and physical spaces. However, CI is more concerned with how communities develop the social and technical capacities needed to promote ICT access, adoption, and use. CI projects are as diverse globally as they are locally. A common theme connecting them is community participation in ICTs to promote social action and social change.˟ On October 1, 2004, the first issue of The Journal of Community Informatics was published. It has since remained a free and open access, double-blind peer review journal featuring academic research and practitioner contributions at the intersection of CI research, practice, and policy. A wide range of submissions have been welcome, including research articles, notes from the field, points of view, reports, case studies, and more. As a way to celebrate the past 20 years of the journal, and to open up new avenues for participation, we invite original submissions in these traditional formats, as well as new formats including artistic works such as poetry, audio/video recordings, and visual artwork. Information for Contributors We are interested in short paper submissions of 1,500-2,000 words that reflect on any of the topics listed below. • The past, present, and future of community informatics • Reflections from journal article authors about the impact of their contributions • Personal/professional reflections on CI as a field of research and practice • Critical reflections on and interrogations of the need for community informatics • The role of JoCI and other open access publications in the scholarly communication ecosystem Contributors should include a 200-300 word abstract that describes their submission. Dear AOIR colleagues, I'm searching for any literature - academic research, reports, papers, books, media articles, websites etc - that provide me with insights about the current state of online harm in South Pacific nations. I'm interested in identifying literature that can point to the extent of online harm - whether cyberbullying or harassment, child exploitation and abuse, scams, cybersecurity, mis/dis-information, etc. But I would also be interested in finding out more about what educational or assistive resources might exist for individual countries such as Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Niue, Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Tuvalu and Tokelau. The aim is to learn from people’s engagements with rising technologies in the Global South. Long Abstract: Data-intensive logics and practices have become highly intertwined with many aspects of people's everyday lives, spanning healthcare, communication, digital activism, and more. In the Global South, the rapid expansion of telecommunication infrastructure, combined with the widespread availability of smartphones and AI tools, has significantly reshaped how people engage with public services, work, consumption and many more. Mobile apps for instance have expedited the implementation of welfare policies, extended access of payment solutions and financial services to previously marginalized communities. However, as more individuals embrace digital platforms, corporations and governments also employ algorithms to control, selectively include, or exclude individuals from this digital ecosystem. This raises concerns and sparks debates regarding equality, inclusion, and privacy. The study of people's experiences thus is crucial as responses to these changes are highly contextual and dependent on individuals' material and affective conditions. Additionally, observing and uncovering ambiguities embedded in digitally mediated everyday life poses methodological challenges. The point of departure for our panel is that datafication remains a highly interactive and relational process. Drawing insights from experiences in the Global South, we aim to reexamine and further explore: The roles of digital technologies How people interact with digitally mediated society The evolving strategies and approaches that (digital) ethnographers employ in their "fieldwork" The opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogues among scholars from sociology, information science and technology, communication, and media studies.

The Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad (UoH), India, and the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, invite submissions for a one-day symposium on the theme “Constructing the Digital: Working from the Global South <https://aoirhyd2024.github.io/>” ( https://aoirhyd2024.github.io/) to be held on April 13 2024, Hyderabad. This Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) Flashpoint Symposium will explore forms and structures of labour contributing to digital infrastructures, content, and systems, and presents an extensive opportunity for emerging and senior scholars, members of the digital/platform labour rights advocacy and activist community in the region to connect around critical questions related to the theme. In addition to two keynote panels, this one-day symposium will feature three thematic panels dealing with the labour behind the construction of the digital—as platform, infrastructure, device, content, environment, or medium, with particular emphasis on experiences and perspectives from underrepresented groups. Submissions to these panels could explore cultures of production and digital mediation, from data annotation and content moderation to platform and gig workers to creators of various kinds, addressing some of these themes: - Visibility and invisibility in the digital and platform economy - Engineering digital infrastructure–who does it, where, and on what terms? - Gigs behind and beyond platforms - Intersectional understandings of worker rights - Skilling, de-skilling and valuation of labour - AI as enabler and threat - The possibilities of collectivisation - The enfolding of labour into the private sphere - New infrastructures of/for work–who and what do they privilege? - The place of digital labour in life–health, leisure, education, etc. Abstracts must be no longer than 500 words outlining a clear research question, methodology, results or emerging results if it is a work-in -progress, and implications or outcomes from research. *Deadline for submission of abstracts is January 30, 2024;* Communication of acceptance February 28 2024.
