Teaching and research aim to analyze the possibilities and consequences of digital technologies in the production, reception and distribution of artistic, cultural and creative artifacts and processes and to further develop them through own and collective research and practice. We are looking for a promising academic and/or artistically active candidate, preferably with international experience. Candidates must hold a PhD degree at the time of application and other excellent academic achievements in the relevant field are required. Teaching may be carried out in English. Non-German speaking candidates are expected to acquire a working knowledge of German within the first three years of their appointment. This is fostered by enabling technologies such as IoT and pervasive networks, advanced data management and analytics techniques, and advanced platforms with massive diffusion, chiefly among them Online Social Networks. Whatever we do in one world has immediate consequences on the other world, thanks to a constant flow of data - and online analytics - between the two worlds. In this context, the vision of the Metaverse provides additional perspectives, augmenting human interactions with things and other humans across the two worlds. The role of the humans in this socio-technical complex system is key, and still largely unexplored. Quite interestingly, while new tools characteristic of the cyber-physical world- OSN among them - have been designed to largely extend human capabilities, the real interplay between these tools and human behaviours and cognitive constraints often result in unexpected results. Therefore, while humans are in principle at the center of the cyber-physical convergence and, thus -- in the perspective -- of the Metaverse, the interplay between both worlds and the technical solutions underpinning this convergence are hitherto largely unexplored and yet to be understood. This is a big gap our community should fill in, in order to develop cyber-physical worlds (and the Metaverse) as a truly human-centric environment. OSNeHM’s main theme will be the role of Online Social Networks in such a human-centric cyber-physical convergence leading to the Metaverse. It will provide a forum for discussion on early yet principled approaches and results on all aspects related to this theme. A special emphasis will be devoted to the characterisation of the individual and social behaviour of humans, using OSN as “big data microscopes” for collecting and analysing big data via robust big data analytics. Papers discussing solutions focusing on the interplay between social and technical (online and offline) worlds will be high welcome. On the other hand, the workshop will welcome papers proposing novel technical solutions to support human-centric approaches to the evolution of OSN in the perspective of the Metaverse. To do this, I need a software that allows me to visualize the Instagram image and the text at the same time, in order to code the post as a whole in categories. Digital Media Literacies in Africa: Call for Papers A great deal of scholarly attention has been given to media literacy in recent years, as shown by the numerous books and journal articles published on the topic over the past decade. Yet much of this research examines media literacy in the European, Asian, and American contexts. Africa, by contrast, has been given scant attention. The recent Wiley Blackwell International Encyclopedia of Media Literacy, for example, has a range of case studies, none of which comes from Africa. Within the research literature, two broad approaches are noticeable. One looks at media literacy from the point of view of “skills” (such as news literacy and how to spot propaganda or fake news) while the other is concerned with how to develop “critical” media literacies (for example, understanding how media ownership shapes news content). However, due to the development of ICTs and social media, media literacy concepts and research foci have expanded dramatically over the past two decades. For example, Keener & West (2021) identify media literacies as including issues such as traditional news literacy; digital citizenship; digital literacy; information literacy; media arts; and technological media literacy. Despite differences in approach to media literacy, the overarching goal of media literacy scholarship and advocacy is to empower media users, enabling them to understand the complexities of media production and consumption as well as the implications of media for individuals and society at large. Ultimately, we argue with Lewis and Jhally (2006) that the primary aim of media literacy education is to create more sophisticated citizens, rather than sophisticated media consumers. What is interesting from our current African context is the particular variety and distribution of media that are available due to our colonial past; and how these are made part of social life in contexts of deep inequalities. Given this history and the inequalities that shape how we are able to access and interact with the media - whether “legacy” or digital media - we ask: “what does it mean - and take - to be media literate in Africa today?” What research there is, appears contradictory: de Laneroll, Walton, and Schoon (2020) for example argue that despite the enormous challenges of being “less connected” in African contexts of economic and infrastructural inequality, people are highly skilled and resourceful in order to overcome their digital limitations. In contrast, research that is interested in a developmental agenda tends to stress the importance of media literacy, particularly in the context of growing disinformation and misinformation spread via digital media platforms. For example, the recent Covid-19 pandemic brought media literacy in Africa into sharp focus, particularly with the creation and spread of disinformation and misinformation about the virus and efforts to combat it (Cunliffe-Jones, et al, 2021). In this unique seven-country study, Cunliffe-Jones et al. conclude that misinformation literacy is barely taught in Africa. Given this paucity of scholarship about media literacy in Africa, especially in relation to the complexity of our media landscape, as well as digital inequalities and its impacts on Africans as media users (producers and consumers) in the age of rising internet connectivity, social media, information overload, disinformation and misinformation, this call for paper is targeted at understanding themes such as: Journalism and digital media literacy in Africa Youth digital media literacy education in Africa Youth, social media and self-representation Media literacy, cyberbullying, sexting, trolling, phishing and media addiction Digital media literacy, gender and body-image positivity Media literacy education in African countries Media literacy in African contexts of socio-economic inequality Media literacy and digital inequalities in Africa Power and hegemony in legacy and digital media in Africa Media literacy, dis/misinformation and fact-checking in African contexts Media literacy and African citizenship education Media literacy, political communication and propaganda in Africa Media literacy and digital media activism in Africa Innovative indigenous digital media literacy practices in Africa Media literacy and health communication Digital advertising and disinformation Digital literacy and COVID-19 Interested researchers and practitioners are invited to submit an abstract of 350 words clearly explaining the details of their proposed contributions in line with the theme by 15 February 2023. As a result, news companies have modified their revenue models, and they continue to do so. More recently, governments in some markets have launched new funds to support journalism, offering cash payments. Additionally, Google and Facebook are increasingly paying for news content. These emerging funding models raise questions about how commercial media should be supported by the public and platforms. A recent report, commissioned by the New Zealand Ministry of Culture and Heritage, argues that “there is no need for ongoing public funding for commercial news content,” (Loan et al., 2021) and that government funding presents risks around interference with editorial content. In the past, scholars have investigated business models of journalism based on subscriptions, memberships, and donations, but there is a need to update our understanding of these models and any other emerging models of funding journalism in this decade. Therefore, we invite scholars to submit theoretical, conceptual, innovative, and empirical scholarship that explores how these developments shape the news media sector and its relationship to democracy. We welcome qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods research from across the globe. The questions we are aiming to address include: * Which theoretical frameworks and approaches are essential in investigating contemporary business models of journalism? * How effective/sustainable are the emerging revenue models that rely on support from governments and/or platforms? * How can we critically evaluate revenue models supported by the government and/or platforms? * What kind of empirical evidence can be used to evaluate contemporary revenue models of journalism? * What kind of paradoxes rise from the public/platform funding of private media? * What are the democratic and societal impacts associated with the governmental and/or platform funding of the media? * Are there case studies that exemplify sustainable revenue models of digital journalism? The SMLC is an interdisciplinary lab that utilizes cutting edge technology to listen, measure, and engage in online conversations across various digital and social media platforms. Its mission is to empower students and faculty from across the university to leverage the power of analytics and computational social science to better understand how information spreads, resonates, and performs. The ideal candidate for this position will work alongside the SMLC Director and staff to support research endeavors across the university through data collection, grant writing, and collaborative research projects with faculty from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. The candidate will engage in project management, data analysis, and manuscript preparation for publication in scientific journals. The candidate will have an outstanding opportunity to collaborate with accomplished scholars across the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences, which encompasses seven academic units, including Communication; Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management; Political Science; Psychology; Public Health Sciences; Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice; and a School of Nursing. The college is also home to twelve centers and institutes. *Qualifications and Necessary Skills:* - MA (required) or PhD (preferred) in communication, information science, computer science, computational social science, or related field. - Experience in harvesting and managing large databases, particularly (but not exclusively) from major social media platforms. - Analysis experience using quantitative methods and research techniques. - Experience analyzing data using computational linguistic techniques (NLP; sentiment analysis, etc.), network science (social and/or semantic), machine learning, etc. - Ability to independently identify external funding opportunities and write grantsDemonstrated capacity for interdisciplinary scholarship.
