Hi all, We are organizing a workshop at CHI this year titled “The Future of Hybrid Care and Wellbeing in HCI.” We aim to gather researchers across academia and industry to discuss remote care and wellbeing as we transition into a world increasingly adopting hybrid lifestyles and modes of operation. This workshop will be a venue to discuss questions such as "What does holistic wellbeing look like in the era of hybrid caregiving?", "How does environmental care factor into our research practice?" among others around hybrid care and wellbeing. We invite researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to reflect on these questions and advance the future of remote and hybrid care at CHI. We invite submissions in the form of short papers (2-4 pages excluding references) or abstracts (300 words). All submissions will be due on Feb 23, 2023, and need to be formatted according to the ACM Master template (single column). Submissions should ideally be focused on remote and hybrid care, future of care work, and related topics. The workshop themes can serve as a guide, and we encourage submissions that go beyond the ideas covered within them on these topics. Submissions may present current or past research projects, or could be position papers, literature reviews, or theoretical analyses. The conference is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Computer Society's TCDP. It is a premier annual forum for sharing original, novel ideas in mobile ad-hoc networks and smart systems, defined broadly. As wireless ad-hoc networks continue to evolve and specialize into a number of application scenarios and environments, and sensor-based systems and technologies increasingly permeate our everyday life and become the inner fabric of the Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems, the unfolding of smart environments such as smart cities, smart farming, smart healthcare, and smart manufacturing, to name a few, demand integrated solutions that can make intelligent use of both cloud and edge systems, while applying machine learning and artificial intelligence tools to handle their growing complexity and to leverage the vast amount of available data created. The MASS organizing committee invites proposals for full-day or half-day workshops affiliated with the conference. The purpose of these workshops is to provide a platform for presenting novel ideas in a less formal and possibly more focused way than at the conference itself. The goal is to enable stimulating discussions of state-of-the-art, emerging, visionary, and perhaps controversial topics. Workshop proposals are solicited in all areas and topics related to mobile ad-hoc and smart systems. Addressing emerging research directions in these areas are particularly welcome. Accepted MASS 2023 workshop papers will be included in the conference proceeding published in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, showing their affiliation with IEEE MASS. We expect all accepted workshops to adhere to a common paper submission (i.e., two-column IEEE conference style, maximum paper length of 6 pages) and reviewing schedule, as outlined in the dates indicated below. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS Each workshop proposal must at least include: 1) Full name of the workshop and its intended acronym 2) Workshop Organizers (names, affiliation and contact information) 3) A short biography of the organizers (up to 200 words for each), highlighting any conferences / workshops chaired 4) A brief description (up to 1 page) of the technical issues that the workshop will address, and the reasons why the workshop is of interest to MASS at this time. 5) Some consideration of the communities/groups the workshop intends to attract. 6) The names and affiliations of at least ten program committee member candidates. 7) Planned format of the workshop, including - Duration of the workshop: Half-day, Full-day and tentative schedule - Number of refereed papers, hot topic sessions, keynotes, panels (and panel formats) etc. 8) If applicable, a description of past versions of the workshop, including dates, organisers, numbers of submitted and accepted papers, and number of attendees. 9) Draft Call for Papers (max 1 page). 10) A description of the publicity and promotion plan. The media underwent massive restructuring through neoliberal policies in the 1970s. Introducing new communication technologies such as satellite and cable television, internet, and web platforms went hand in hand with market liberalisation and communication commercialisation. The multiplication of channels and media outlets was accompanied by concentration and centralisation of ownership. Recently, large transnational digital platforms have solidified their position as core companies within contemporary capitalism, restructuring the distribution of media advertising investments, speeding up the circulation of capital, automating global consumption patterns, avoiding national taxes, and siphoning revenues to offshore entities. At the same time, they benefit from automated management of their diversified and essentially precarious workforces of content moderators, warehouse workers, and gig workers, as well as from software inputs from free and open source communities (FLOSS) communities. The rise of platforms reshapes traditional institutional mechanisms that broadly safeguard freedom of expression, media pluralism, and public interests. How these mechanisms will be re-considered and how private interests will shape markets and societies is an open political issue. Alternatives are being envisioned in areas ranging from platform cooperatives and commons projects to strategic calls for technological sovereignty and public wealth creation. However, such initiatives usually need broader political support from the public already accustomed to the commercial logic of the media. The commodification of everyday life through data capture, surveillance and privacy intrusion is easily dismissed by citizens as a minor side effect of free usage and flexibility of ubiquitous digital services. This biennial course aims to explore traditional (e.g. ownership, production, content, consumption, labour, regulation) and contemporary (e.g. algorithms, platforms, data, artificial intelligence) perspectives on the media from the lens of critical political economy. The course will explore how capital and the state(s) control, regulate and form the media (broadly conceived as ranging from traditional printed press to algorithms and software) in societies shaped by persistent social inequalities. The level of analysis can vary from macro phenomena of geopolitics, transnational, national and institutional dynamics, through mid-range phenomena of the structure(s) of the public sphere(s), to micro-phenomena of class-based conditions shaping inequalities of access and skill for using the media in everyday life and for work. The course will include presentations from keynote speakers, course directors and presentations by advanced MA and PhD students. Through lectures and discussions with international experts, students will gain in-depth knowledge about recent communication, media, and journalism developments from the critical political economy perspective. Methods and analytical tools commonly used in the approach will be explained and discussed. Presentation of the research papers (considered work in progress) will lead to comprehensive feedback that will help students develop their projects further and result in publishable academic writing. Discussions will be carried out collaboratively, with reciprocal assessment by students. Deadlines: • Course is open to advanced MA and PhD students. Please submit your CV (maximum two pages), title and an extended abstract of your presentation (maximum two pages with references) by 15 April 2023 to political.economies.of.the.media(a)gmail.com • Course directors will review applications, and final decisions on acceptance will be sent by 15 May 2023. • Accepted applicants will be invited to submit 6 to 9,000-word research papers by 1 September 2023. After completion of the course, the applicants will be encouraged to submit their papers for review in an international peer-reviewed journal in the field of political economy. • Note: only PhD students can receive 10 ECTS points upon course completion, which entails a submitted research paper, paper presentation and full-week active attendance participation in the course (more information will be published on the course website). • Please note that all participants pay a registration fee of 50 EUR. At the same time, the interoperability among IoT environments (including wearable computing and sensors), the network edge, and the cloud are evolving towards an edge-cloud continuum that is expected to support a wide range of application domains and services in a more smooth and efficient manner. In this context, providing rich sets of measurements for characterizing, detecting, and understanding the behavior of such complex systems is of paramount importance. IEEE WoWMoM 2023 takes a broad view and seeks papers describing innovative research contributions to the field of mobile and wireless networking and applications. We solicit papers that present original work, validated by experimentation, simulation, or analysis. We also welcome practical experiences and experimental efforts from both industry and academia, duly documenting the lessons learned from testbeds, field trials, or real deployments. All poster/demo submissions will be handled electronically. Posters/demos that do not comply with the Submission Guidelines will be rejected without review. All posters/demos should be submitted electronically in PDF and be no longer than 3 pages in the IEEE double column proceedings format including tables, figures and references. Papers exceeding 3 pages will not be accepted. All accepted abstracts will appear in the proceedings. The demos and posters should include the prefix "DEMO:" and "POSTER:" in the title of the submitted paper, respectively.
