Best, Alex Data cooperatives: Toward a datafication from below Alexander Halavais (ASU) & Alejandro Alvarado Rojas (USC) For most, the word “datafication” connotes structures of hierarchical power: the process of making the textured everyday into something measurable, consumable, and controllable by overarching structures of political and economic power—with good reason (Kitchin, 2014). It is easy to find examples of the ways in which corporations and governments have made use of data as a means of control. Even outside of this, the kinds of accumulation that standardization of data permit makes it a resource that is easily bent toward reification of existing systems of exploitation and control. There are critics who see all forms of ICTs as inherently serving these same ends, but we have now accumulated enough models of resistance and change to see that neither the “information imperialism” (e.g., Schiller, 1991) nor the “computer lib” (e.g., Nelson, 1974) extremes envisioned in the early days of networking entirely came to pass. The reality was much more complicated. The question becomes whether there are parallel examples of peer-based and collaborative data sharing that might be applied to the process of datafication, in areas as diverse as education, smart cities, the structure of labor, and the place of citizenship. While there are relatively clear examples of ways in which new networked technologies have been used to resist certain kinds of powerful political and economic structures, there are relatively fewer examples of datafication—the encoding of everyday activities into measurable quanta—being used pro-socially. Milan, & Velden (2016) provide several examples of these, drawing on genres of “proactive data activism,” to show how individuals and groups, rather than refusal, deploy data collection and dissemination practices as an alternative form of resistance. This panel seeks to explore examples and prototypes of peer-based accumulation, networking, and sharing of data. What does it mean to share data within a community? What different kinds of problems exist around negotiating access, controlling misuse, and creative re-use of collective data? Are there models here worthy of replication, patterns of datafication that provide the sources of that data with more control and autonomy? How do cooperation, collaboration, and similar collective dynamics redefine the value and nature of data? How can marginalized experiences with data inform more just and equitable data sharing models? How are such models feasible and sustainable? Cited Kitchin, R. (2014). *** Last Call for Special Track Proposals *** 10th European Conference On Service-Oriented And Cloud Computing (ESOCC 2023) October 24-26, 2023, Golden Bay Beach Hotel, Larnaca, Cyprus https://cyprusconferences.org/esocc2023/ AIM AND SCOPE The European Conference on Service-Oriented and Cloud Computing (ESOCC) is the premier conference on advances in the state of the art and practice of Service-Oriented Computing and Cloud Computing in Europe. The main objectives of this conference are to facilitate the exchange between researchers and practitioners in the areas of Service-oriented Computing and Cloud Computing and to foster future collaborations in Europe and beyond. ESOCC 2023 will host Special Tracks as part of its program. Special Tracks provide a space where ESOCC participants can discuss, e.g., topics relevant to Service-Oriented and Cloud Computing even if not explicitly mentioned in ESOCC’s topics of interest (cf. https://cyprusconferences.org/esocc2023/call-for-papers/) early-stage research ideas and/or results, or demonstrate industry-ready tools and research prototypes. Special Tracks may be driven by research interests, needs from specific application domains, or aim at bringing together practitioners and researchers from the area of Service-Oriented and Cloud Computing. Proposals for special tracks should indicate the title of the Special Track, its aims and scope (150-300 words), the Special Track chair(s), and the tentative members of the track’s PC. Please email your proposals as a PDF file to the PC chairs of ESOCC 2023, Florian Rademacher (florian.rademacher at fh-dortmund.de) and Jacopo Soldani (jacopo.soldani at unipi.it). Special Tracks will be selected for ESOCC 2023 using a lightweight review process. IMPORTANT DATES • Special Track Proposal Submission: February 26th, 2023 (AoE) • Notification of Acceptance: March 5th, 2023 (AoE) ORGANISATIONAL INFORMATION Chairs of accepted Special Tracks can devise a Call for Papers for their track, which will be published on ESOCC 2023 website, together with the provided information on the track (title, aims and scope, PC). The Call for Papers for their track will then be disseminated alongside that of ESOCC, and submissions will be handled through the EasyChair of ESOCC, which will include a special track link. Papers accepted for Special Tracks will be included in the main conference proceedings of ESOCC 2023, published by Springer in the LNCS series. The best papers accepted in the Special Tracks will be eligible for consideration to be invited to submit extended versions for a Journal Special Issue to be published by Springer Computing. These challenges include algorithmic bias and discrimination, profit-driven innovation, and technology imaginaries around convenience, optimization, and neutrality. The works of Black feminists and critical race theorists as well as decolonial and Global South scholars and activists render visible the interlockings of societal, economic, cultural, and political injustice in the design, production, and distribution of technology. In thinking about the future and its daunting challenges, including the transformation of work, climate change, migration, and overall precarity, what should be the role of technology? What do technological futures look like from a social justice perspective? The Tübingen Symposium will bring together critiques of unsettling trajectories as well as visions for alternative pathways. We will question the canonical values in technology creation – scale, efficiency, and (big) data aggregation – while also exploring diverse and potentially competing social justice concepts. The Tübingen Symposium will give invited speakers the opportunity to connect and share views on the topics of the symposium. The audience will benefit from interactive panels including discussions of case studies of harmful contemporary or visionary alternative technologies.
