Postdoctoral Associate - Asian Americans and STEM Yale University https://apply.interfolio.com/118709 Following the successful pilot of an interdisciplinary course combining Asian American studies with scientific fields of inquiry, Yale invites applicants for a renewable one-year interdisciplinary postdoctoral fellowship beginning in Fall 2023 to promote teaching and research at the intersection of Asian American studies and STEM fields. The postdoctoral fellowship will be housed at the Center for Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration or an affiliated department such as the program of American Studies or Ethnicity, Race, and Migration (ERM); or a STEM department such as physics or computer science. The postdoctoral associate will participate fully in the intellectual life of RITM and affiliated program or department and teach one course per semester. In addition, the postdoctoral associate will work with faculty and graduate students to organize a two-day conference on “Asian Americans and STEM” to be hosted by RITM in spring of 2024. To supplement our annual October conference, the Association of Internet Researchers is seeking proposals for a one-day AoIR Flashpoint Symposium to take place before the end of August 2023. As the 2023 AoIR conference takes place in Philadelphia, USA, only proposals for locations outside of North America will be considered. An AoIR Flashpoint Symposium is a small event that provides an opportunity to deepen or foster conversations about internet research among regions, groups, and/or thematic research areas that have thus far been underrepresented in the Association of Internet Researchers and its conferences. The Association is making available one grant of up to US$8,000 for the purpose of supporting a one-day symposium that will contribute to the life and mission of AoIR and feed into its annual conference. Each symposium will be a standalone event to take place in a region of the world that differs from that of the 2023 annual conference (Philadelphia, USA). Preference will be given to regions and locations where an AoIR conference has not yet been held, but where at least one active AoIR member, who will be on the Flashpoint Symposium planning committee, resides. We also require that the symposium makes a contribution to the main 2023 AoIR conference in some way (e.g., a panel, pre-conference workshop, or another format that presents key contributions and outcomes from the symposium). In addition to local participants, all AoIR members are invited to attend the Flashpoint Symposium. *Deadline for the submission of this proposal is 27 January 2023*, with a decision returned by the end of February 2023. Proposers are invited to engage in conversation with the AoIR symposium committee. Proposals should: - Be no more than 1-2 pages in length. - Outline a distinct issue or theme to be addressed by the symposium, and demonstrate how this theme has not been sufficiently addressed by AoIR conferences to date. - Include a proposed date (between 1 April and 31 August) and schedule for the one-day event, and identify potential keynote speakers (keeping in mind AoIR’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity <https://aoir.org/diversity-and-inclusivity/>). Note: the proposal should ideally not suggest parallel sessions but rather envision a day of consecutive sessions (i.e. a single stream only). - Include a brief description of the leadership team’s history with AoIR and their plans for future involvement. - Demonstrate how this Flashpoint Symposium will connect with AoIR more broadly. - Include a preliminary budget that demonstrates in-kind support and/or sponsorship from the host institution(s) and creates a preliminary plan for cost items. Please note that AoIR funding is not to be allocated for the funding of participant travel costs, staff costs in support of the symposium’s organization, or indirect costs (such costs must be borne by local sponsorship), but may include keynote honoraria, travel of keynote speakers, meals, venue or labor costs. - Indicate how regional and transnational graduate students will be encouraged to participate. - Include a discussion of projected outcomes from this symposium and its potential for ongoing benefit to AoIR more broadly (e.g., AoIR conference panel, special issue, etc.). A selection of organizers and delegates should make a firm commitment to present key contributions and outcomes from the Flashpoint Symposium at the year’s annual conference. AoIR’s commitment to the symposium will include: - Support for promotion and administration through our various channels and platforms (e.g. via organization social media accounts and email lists), as well as limited AoIR administrative support. - Up to $US8,000 disbursed in the form of reimbursements and invoices to cover costs related to organizing of the symposium. - Mentorship from members of AoIR Executive Committee related to the organization of the symposium and subsequent deliverables/outcomes. - Allocation of one session slot (panel, roundtable, fishbowl, experimental session, or pre-conference workshop) on the annual AoIR conference program to the symposium organizers. This session is invited and will be planned jointly by the symposium organizers, the AoIR Executive Committee, and the AoIR Conference organizers in order to present the symposium’s major themes and outcomes. It must involve several participants selected from among the organizers, keynote speakers, and/or other participants of the symposium in order to allow the symposium conversation to continue at the main annual conference. - An additional $US2,000 in travel awards to help bring a panel of Flashpoint participants to the AoIR conference in Philadelphia. (This cannot be reallocated for any other purpose.) Proposals will be ranked in relation to their ability to: - Advance AoIR’s goal of diversification of membership and the expansion of geographical presence at the annual AoIR conference. - Address a theme, topic, or issue not yet prominent in AoIR’s annual conferences. - Articulate a clear outcome that will foster conversation in the future. - Demonstrate a commitment to encouraging graduate student participation, particularly from those in the host region. - Demonstrate capacity for carrying out the symposium in a manner that contributes to the benefit of AoIR and the individual organizer(s). - Demonstrate a commitment to present outcomes at the annual AoIR conference. * Apologies for cross posting * Dear colleagues, We are currently looking to hire a post-doc to join our new project “Megabytes vs Megawatts: Understanding Infrastructural Frictions between Data Centers and Energy Grids for Sustainable Digitalization” funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation. The project aims to study societal conflicts and sociotechnical imaginaries around “sustainability” that arise at the intersection between energy-intense data infrastructure and energy grids in transition. The project draws upon interdisciplinary perspectives, combining critical studies of media infrastructures; environmental media; anthropology, and science and technology studies (STS). The postdoc is expected to conduct critical qualitative, empirical research, focusing on the interplay between data infrastructure and energy in relation to sustainability. They will work in an international, interdisciplinary team consisting of scholars with backgrounds in media studies, anthropology and sts. Candidates with a wide variety of backgrounds are eligible for the position, including media studies, science and technology studies, anthropology, sociology, design, human geography, political science or related fields. The post-doc position is full time, for 2 years with the possibility of extension up to a total maximum of three years. [CFP] 'toys' (Reminder: 3000 word articles due on 17 February) Toys have a complex relationship with children, childhood, play, and the adult world. They can be constructed as a site of creativity and imagination, inspiring a new generation to explore possible roles, futures, skills, and aspirations. Alternatively, they can be seen as an effective tool for enlisting the next generation as unwitting participants in the consumerist dystopia. Toys increasingly include digital components, sometimes accessing and sharing data online, sometimes taking the form of play that includes accessories and apps. Either way, and at all points in between, toys have a special place in the childhood imaginary and in the hopes and fears of parents and of adults who care for and about children. This issue is interested in toys as vehicles for future imaginaries, as links with the past, and as receptacles for adults' hopes and fears for their children. Take, for example, the role of Internet-connected toys. Such toys might be seen as implicated in a range of flows of data and of money that are invisible to the child themself and, often, to the parents. Parents (possibly succumbing to pester power) may buy or engineer the purchase of a toy, which may come with a warranty and a requirement for accepting terms and conditions: all of which serve to gather data about the adult and the child user. In addition to the purchase of the toy, the caregiver is required to provide an Internet service, which represents another cost. Many toys and connected playthings are implicated in other flows of financial interest as vehicles for advertising messages, or in terms of offering higher 'levels' of engagement or game or toy enhancements. Finally, toys may themselves include or suggest further products, commodifying the attention and interest of the child that plays with them. This issue invites articles that explore constructions of toys that position playthings at the junctions of human experience, imagination, data, information, and monetary flows. Ideally prospective contributors should email an abstract of 100-250 words and a brief biography to the issue editors. Abstracts should include the article title and should describe your research question, approach, and argument. Biographies should be about three sentences (maximum 75 words) and should include your institutional affiliation and research interests. Articles should be 3000 words (plus bibliography). All articles will be double-blind refereed and must adhere to MLA style (6th edition). PD must increasingly be able to address and serve various global contexts. Overall, then, there is a fundamental need to raise previously unheard global voices in technology design and development, and to bring various stakeholders together. The bread and butter of participatory methodology has been physically co-located creative work with participants, with the aim to immerse the practitioners in the use context, and to learn about the practices, needs and values relevant for the stakeholders in this context. This embedded, hands-on work is crucial and arguably forms the basis of PD practice. Often, this has also meant that PD research teams have been mostly physically co-located, at least for the duration of the PD process. This approach has fundamental validity, as PD requires an in-depth understanding of the cultural context in which it is performed. Nevertheless, this approach also has its drawbacks, as collocated work means both geographical and financial limitations to the type of work that can be accomplished. Conducting multi-site co-located work may be prohibitively time-consuming and expensive, and may also require extensive physical capabilities from both practitioners and participants, leaving many voices unheard. Furthermore, the rapid adoption of various synchronous and asynchronous communication methods through online collaborative tools offer opportunities for more continuous, more dispersed, and more diverse PD research settings and processes. During the world-wide social distancing efforts of 2020–2022, an enormous leap forward was made seemingly overnight in adopting novel modalities of participation and collaboration. As we have sincemoved into a post social distancing world, it is important and timely to both seize the lessons learned from the pandemic-induced forced hybridization of PD, and to keep developing the potentialities that emerged from the experience. However, this opportunity also raises several questions, including: How can we enable various global stakeholders to take part in global hybrid PD? How can PD practitionerswork across cultural spheres in distant settings, and how can we perform culturally aware and sensitive work without ‘being there’? What can a partly technology-mediated PD process consist of, what knowledge can it produce, and what limitations does it have? What novel challenges and opportunities pertaining to accessibility emerge in a technology-mediated PD process? What values, competences and awareness do PD practitioners need when conducting PD work in culturally diverse hybrid settings? What PD processes or methods are not suited to hybrid work and best left for the “nonline” world? What theories, methods and lessons from other fields of research, e,g, from remote ethnography or Computer-Supported Collaborative Work, could be applied? We invite those interested to submit a position paper (3–4 pages) in the SIGCHI Single column paper format (https://www.acm.org/binaries/content/assets/publications/taps/acm_submissio…<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.acm.o…>). Call for Papers: Information & Culture<https://infoculturejournal.org/> is an academic journal printed three times a year by the University of Texas Press<https://utpress.utexas.edu/>. It publishes original, high-quality, peer-reviewed articles examining the social and cultural influences and impact of information and its associated technologies, broadly construed, on all areas of human endeavor. In keeping with the spirit of information studies, we seek papers emphasizing a human-centered focus that address the role and reciprocal relationship of information and culture, regardless of time and place. The journal welcomes submissions from an array of relevant theoretical and methodological approaches, including but not limited to historical, sociological, psychological, political and educational research that address the interaction of information and culture. Articles published with Information & Culture will go through a rigorous peer review process conducted by subject experts and members of the journal’s Editorial Advisory Board, will be included in online and hard copy versions of the journal, and will be promoted on social media and relevant listservs to diverse audiences.
