Dear Community members, I have completed a new trimester teaching Change Management for IT Management undergraduate students at Astana IT University, Kazakhstan. They are now in the process of submitting their final projects that mostly focus on various IT change management case studies (e.g. Google, IBM, Microsoft etc.) grounded on theoretical models and frameworks along with critical analysis. If there is an opportunity to publish a book, e.g. a collection of IT change management cases, let me know. Alternatively, I might try to publish some works at international research journals and some at local Kazakh journals. I believe publishing a book would be interesting. Newspaper articles about AI in The Times in 1949

I’m hoping somebody here subscribes to The Times (in the UK) and is willing to search The Times’s online archives for me to find two articles related to Alan Turing and AI that I am insanely curious to read, because they seem extremely pertinent to current debates about ChatGPT. Probably many insitutions in the UK would also subscribe to Gale (https://www.gale.com/intl/c/the-times-digital-archive) which also has The Times’s archives. The articles are: • "No mind for mechanical man", 10 June 1949, p. 2 This is apparently a report from a symposium where Jefferson claimed that a computer would need to create and feel art in order to be intelligent. • A response from Turing on June 11, 1949 I don’t know the title of this article but it was published the following day, and a journalist interviewed Turing about the previous day’s report. Turing said "I do not think you can even draw the line about sonnets, though the comparison is perhaps a little bit unfair because a sonnet written by a machine will be better appreciated by another machine." These two articles are cited in lots of articles online but I can’t find the originals anywhere. Even my university library has given up, which kind of shocks me. Surely old NEWSPAPERS shouldn’t be that hard to get? Did all the libraries throw out their microfiches and now The Times and Gale have monopolies? Like Getty digitized all those public domain images and film reels and locks them up behind paywalls? Shouldn’t a newspaper article published 73 years ago be in the public domain by now, anyway? I read about the newspaper articles in this paper, which I very much enjoyed: Gonçalves, Bernardo. 2022. “Can Machines Think? The Controversy That Led to the Turing Test.” __AI & SOCIETY__, January. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00146-021-01318-6. Gonçalves argues that Turing switched from designing programs to beat a human at chess to arguing that language models (like, uh, GPT) are a better test of “intelligence” because Jefferson said chess is just rule-based therefore easy, and you need ART to prove intelligence. Gonçalves also explains the Turing test’s weird gender framework by Turing addressing Jefferson’s idea that “another animal of the same species wanting to mate with a mechanical creature” would be a good test of “passing” as not mechanical. PD must increasingly be able to address and serve various global contexts. Overall, then, there is a fundamental need to raise previously unheard global voices in technology design and development, and to bring various stakeholders together. The bread and butter of participatory methodology has been physically co-located creative work with participants, with the aim to immerse the practitioners in the use context, and to learn about the practices, needs and values relevant for the stakeholders in this context. This embedded, hands-on work is crucial and arguably forms the basis of PD practice. Often, this has also meant that PD research teams have been mostly physically co-located, at least for the duration of the PD process. This approach has fundamental validity, as PD requires an in-depth understanding of the cultural context in which it is performed. Nevertheless, this approach also has its drawbacks, as collocated work means both geographical and financial limitations to the type of work that can be accomplished. Conducting multi-site co-located work may be prohibitively time-consuming and expensive, and may also require extensive physical capabilities from both practitioners and participants, leaving many voices unheard. Furthermore, the rapid adoption of various synchronous and asynchronous communication methods through online collaborative tools offer opportunities for more continuous, more dispersed, and more diverse PD research settings and processes. During the world-wide social distancing efforts of 2020–2022, an enormous leap forward was made seemingly overnight in adopting novel modalities of participation and collaboration. As we have since moved into a post social distancing world, it is important and timely to both seize the lessons learned from the pandemic-induced forced hybridization of PD, and to keep developing the potentialities that emerged from the experience. However, this opportunity also raises several questions, including: How can we enable various global stakeholders to take part in global hybrid PD? How can PD practitioners work across cultural spheres in distant settings, and how can we perform culturally aware and sensitive work without ‘being there’? What can a partly technology-mediated PD process consist of, what knowledge can it produce, and what limitations does it have? What novel challenges and opportunities pertaining to accessibility emerge in a technology-mediated PD process? What values, competences and awareness do PD practitioners need when conducting PD work in culturally diverse hybrid settings? What PD processes or methods are not suited to hybrid work and best left for the “nonline” world? What theories, methods and lessons from other fields of research, e,g, from remote ethnography or Computer-Supported Collaborative Work, could be applied? DigiMethods 2023: Future Proofing Journalism and Media curricula in Africa Colloquium The Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies invites you to join us in visualising a curriculum for our shared future as educators teaching journalism and media in the 21st century at a colloquium entitled Digimethods 2023: Future Proofing Journalism and Media Curricula in Africa. At this colloquium, we are interested in what it is that the digital enables: which new directions, new genres and forms of storytelling characterise this shifting terrain? And how do we as educators respond to them and apply them in our various different (and often challenging) contexts? Happening directly after our cutting-edge Digital Research Methods Winter School which will empower media researchers with a range of digital tools, this colloquium is aimed at teachers and educators who want to think and work together on the problem of future-proofing journalism and media curricula in Africa. When? The colloquium will be held from 23-24 June 2023. Where? Africa Media Matrix, Rhodes University in Makhanda, South Africa. BACKGROUND Over a decade ago, JMS worked to imagine a future post-apartheid in a series of Journalism Education Colloquia, which interrogated how journalism teaching needed to respond to the demands of the post-apartheid context. Last year, another series of colloquia saw us turn our focus to the specific circumstances facing journalism today: including the current ‘crisis’ of journalism in the face of digitisation and defunding, and multilingualism in journalism education. In 2023, we continue this series of rigorous engagements with the changing face of journalism. As media educators, we face new challenges as media production has become almost entirely a digital practice requiring specialised digital skills. >From artificial intelligence and immersive storytelling to data journalism and social media scraping: the rapidly changing digital context (both locally and globally) poses a range of challenges - and opportunities - for teachers, supervisors and students in African spaces. Ours is a social context of extreme inequalities experienced along lines of gender, income, race, age, and geographical location; it is a context that is also characterised by highly unequal access to infrastructural, educational, health and other services. Given this uneven social landscape, northern approaches to teaching and researching digital media studies and media production cannot be seamlessly transposed to our southern space. So, we want to bring together some of the best and brightest minds currently working in this terrain in South Africa and the world to find ways of ‘future-proofing’ our curricula: designing programmes and teaching philosophies that are as flexible as they are strong, able to adapt to new contexts and changing technologies, and properly equip our students with the tools they need.
