Description: Demonstrations will showcase research prototypes and commercially available products in a dedicated session. Demo submissions must be based on an implemented and tested system that pursues one or more innovative ideas in the interest areas of the conference. Demonstrations are an excellent and exciting way to showcase implementations and get valuable feedback from the community. Each demo submission must make clear which aspects of the system will be demonstrated, and how these will be demonstrated on-site as well as online. To better identify the value of demos, we also encourage authors to submit a pointer to a screencast (max. 5 minutes on Vimeo or YouTube) or any external material related to the demo (e.g., shared code on GitHub). Descriptions of demonstrations should have a length of max. 5 pages + 1 page of references in the new ACM single-column style. Description: Late-Breaking Results (LBR) are research-in-progress that must contain original and unpublished accounts of innovative research ideas, preliminary results, industry showcases, and system prototypes, addressing both the theory and practice of User Modeling, Adaptation, and Personalization. In addition, papers introducing recently started research projects or summarizing project results are welcome as well. We encourage researchers and practitioners to submit late-breaking work as it provides a unique opportunity for sharing valuable ideas, eliciting useful feedback on early-stage work, and fostering discussions and collaborations among colleagues. Late-Breaking Results papers have a length of up to 7 pages + 2 pages of references in the new ACM single-column style and will be presented to the conference as posters. In the past few years, many of them have led to a flourishing of international initiatives and growing research concerning the ethics and governance of AI. This special issue solicits the submission of original articles that investigate how AI is transforming classic questions or leading to new ones in moral thinking, and how such questions may be addressed successfully. Do not hesitate to contact in case you have questions. *Call for a funded PhD position at INTERACT, University of Oulu* We are looking for a person interested in a PhD position for conducting interdisciplinary research combining child-computer interaction, creative/arts-based practices and critical education. The research will be conducted in the context of the European Union funded research and innovation project “Democracy meets arts: Critical Change Labs for building democratic cultures through creative and narrative practices”. The ideal candidate has a critical understanding of technology and making/digital fabrication/prototyping skills. We are looking for bold and creative thinkers willing to embrace participatory design with children and diverse stakeholders to reimagine democracy. Research duties include reviewing relevant literature, collecting empirical data through working with stakeholders (schoolchildren, teachers, activity organizers, and other relevant actors), analyzing the data with help of theoretical frameworks, and writing academic conference and journal publications. TikTok Bans and Research

Hi All, I just realized that I can no longer access TikTok from work computers. This is in compliance with a policy about TikTok in Texas. Since the American federal government and other states are banning it as well, I'm wondering if anyone has figured out an effective workaround. This is a big barrier to conducting academic research on TikTok, social media, or just the cultural world. Any suggestions would be useful. Work foregrounding questions of power and inequality from local, global, and/or transnational lenses, underrepresented regions and communities is encouraged. With our Fellowship programme we invite international researchers to Bremen for four weeks to deepen and connect their research in the transformation of media, communication and information. We are looking for established scholars that want to enjoy the thriving interdisciplinary research environment at ZeMKI. Involved disciplines include communication and media studies, computer science, film studies, educational science, studies in religion, and history. Since mid-2017, the ZeMKI has regularly hosted colleagues from all over the world. What we expect: The duration of the fellowship is one month. Applicants should demonstrate experience in their respective field of research and a strong interest in working jointly with principal investigators at ZeMKI to develop new ideas together. The main focus of the ZeMKI Visiting Research Fellowship is to pursue a joint project together with at least two ZeMKI Labs (find the full list here: https://www.uni-bremen.de/en/zemki/labs) The joint project can take various forms and should aim to produce impact for academic and public debates in their respective area of scholarly focus. Call for papers: Digital media literacy in Africa

Digital Media Literacies in Africa: Call for Papers A great deal of scholarly attention has been given to media literacy in recent years, as shown by the numerous books and journal articles published on the topic over the past decade. Yet much of this research examines media literacy in the European, Asian, and American contexts. Africa, by contrast, has been given scant attention. The recent Wiley Blackwell International Encyclopedia of Media Literacy, for example, has a range of case studies, none of which comes from Africa. Within the research literature, two broad approaches are noticeable. One looks at media literacy from the point of view of “skills” (such as news literacy and how to spot propaganda or fake news) while the other is concerned with how to develop “critical” media literacies (for example, understanding how media ownership shapes news content). However, due to the development of ICTs and social media, media literacy concepts and research foci have expanded dramatically over the past two decades. For example, Keener & West (2021) identify media literacies as including issues such as traditional news literacy; digital citizenship; digital literacy; information literacy; media arts; and technological media literacy. Despite differences in approach to media literacy, the overarching goal of media literacy scholarship and advocacy is to empower media users, enabling them to understand the complexities of media production and consumption as well as the implications of media for individuals and society at large. Ultimately, we argue with Lewis and Jhally (2006) that the primary aim of media literacy education is to create more sophisticated citizens, rather than sophisticated media consumers. What is interesting from our current African context is the particular variety and distribution of media that are available due to our colonial past; and how these are made part of social life in contexts of deep inequalities. Given this history and the inequalities that shape how we are able to access and interact with the media - whether “legacy” or digital media - we ask: “what does it mean - and take - to be media literate in Africa today?” What research there is, appears contradictory: de Laneroll, Walton, and Schoon (2020) for example argue that despite the enormous challenges of being “less connected” in African contexts of economic and infrastructural inequality, people are highly skilled and resourceful in order to overcome their digital limitations. In contrast, research that is interested in a developmental agenda tends to stress the importance of media literacy, particularly in the context of growing disinformation and misinformation spread via digital media platforms. For example, the recent Covid-19 pandemic brought media literacy in Africa into sharp focus, particularly with the creation and spread of disinformation and misinformation about the virus and efforts to combat it (Cunliffe-Jones, et al, 2021). In this unique seven-country study, Cunliffe-Jones et al. conclude that misinformation literacy is barely taught in Africa. Given this paucity of scholarship about media literacy in Africa, especially in relation to the complexity of our media landscape, as well as digital inequalities and its impacts on Africans as media users (producers and consumers) in the age of rising internet connectivity, social media, information overload, disinformation and misinformation, this call for paper is targeted at understanding themes such as: Journalism and digital media literacy in Africa Youth digital media literacy education in Africa Youth, social media and self-representation Media literacy, cyberbullying, sexting, trolling, phishing and media addiction Digital media literacy, gender and body-image positivity Media literacy education in African countries Media literacy in African contexts of socio-economic inequality Media literacy and digital inequalities in Africa Power and hegemony in legacy and digital media in Africa Media literacy, dis/misinformation and fact-checking in African contexts Media literacy and African citizenship education Media literacy, political communication and propaganda in Africa Media literacy and digital media activism in Africa Innovative indigenous digital media literacy practices in Africa Media literacy and health communication Digital advertising and disinformation Digital literacy and COVID-19 Interested researchers and practitioners are invited to submit an abstract of 350 words clearly explaining the details of their proposed contributions in line with the theme by 1 February 2023. Please could you post this call for papers Call for Papers: AI and Archives: Explorations, Possibilities and Challenges Sussex Humanities Lab, University of Sussex, Brighton, UK April 27th - 28th 2023 AI and Archives: Explorations, Possibilities and Challenges explores the possibilities and challenges afforded by AI in archives, and does so specifically from an intersectional, eco, feminist perspective. The purpose of this symposium is to share interest in, knowledge of and concerns with AI systems in archives and archival practices. We see this event as an opportunity to engage in conversation and to support further formal and informal networking and collaboration. We are therefore launching a call for papers and welcome the perspectives and experiences of scholars, technologists, archivists, and practitioners. This hybrid symposium, a collaboration between Women in Focus, Full Stack Feminism<https://ifte.network/full-stack-feminism/>, and the Sussex Humanities Lab<https://www.sussex.ac.uk/research/centres/sussex-humanities-lab/>, is concerned with questions of if and how AI might be deployed within archive contexts and what the implications and consequences of this might be. We start from the position that AI systems inherit the biases of their creators and require a feminist praxis to ensure that AI tools are ethical and equitable and reduce rather than perpetuate existing problematic hierarchies and power structures in archives and other cultural heritage institutions.
