Dear All, I am looking for a postdoc to work with me in my new project Absence of information in decision-making processes (ABSENCE). The full call for applications can be found here: https://employment.ku.dk/faculty/?show=158489 Postdoctoral position in philosophy and technology The Department of Communication, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral position focusing on theoretical investigations of absence of information and automated decision-making to be filled by 1 August 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is part of the Absence of information in decision-making processes (ABSENCE) research project funded by DFF. The position is for 24 months. Job content The project Absence of information in decision-making processes (ABSENCE) investigates the concept of absence and its role in communication in order to advance our knowledge of decision-making processes for humans and machines. The project asks what we can learn from human social intelligence when developing automated systems. Through the focus on absence of information, the project aims to tease out the tacit elements of communication and decision-making in order to understand these in relation to algorithmic processes. On a fundamental level, ABSENCE asks what it means to be human in relation to technology. The postdoc's research activities will contribute to the aims of the project through conceptual analyses and/or technical developments and applications working at the intersection of philosophy and technology. The successful candidate will be expected to advance the theoretical and philosophical work on absence-based inference in order to inform and advance our understanding of automated decision-making. Further, the postdoc will be expected to conduct expert interviews in order to understand the prospects and pitfalls of new technologies - especially artificial intelligence - in relation to absence and automated decision-making processes. The digitally mediated reality offers a number of affordances to citizens for communication, self-expression, and exercising political and civic agency. ‘Doing’ citizenship in the digital age now encompasses various configurations of social media platforms, messaging services, data repositories, and other networked technologies, and ranges from e-voting and using digital IDs to online campaigning and neighbourhood chat groups. But these affordances are not always possibilities for action: often, they can limit the potential for empowering citizens. Governments also seek to use digital tools to reaffirm their control over the public sphere and information space, while big tech platforms work to collect and consolidate user data for profit as part of their business model. This workshop brings together a group of researchers working on different aspects of digital politics, internet governance and datafied society. The goal is to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue about the promises and perils of networked citizenship and to understand the myriad actors and processes involved in defining, contesting and complicating the practice of being citizens today. In the form of an edited collection, it will extend and innovate current theoretical understandings of and approaches to digital art, visual media, new technologies, digital culture and society. It will do so by exploring the implementation of drones from different socio-cultural perspectives. *CFP: Music and the Internet, University of Chicago and virtual, 9-10 June 2023* Music and the Internet (musicandtheinternet.co) is a hybrid, multi-day interdisciplinary conference that will take place virtually and at the University of Chicago June 9-10 2023. Its goal is to bring together scholars and creators to present across a variety of perspectives on the intersection of music, sound, and online culture, and to help cultivate the developing international network of thinkers at work on these topics. >From autoplaying videos to social media echo chambers, the 21st-century internet is a noisy place. The internet and online platforms have become increasingly entwined in both the music industry and in everyday musical activity, with music as both a shaped and shaping medium. Online music communities have emerged around net-native genres with distinct aesthetic, communicative, and meme-based conventions. Such developments have varied throughout the history of music on the internet, with reverberating effects in other online creative industries. Accordingly, a range of theoretical, practical, and ethical issues are in open (and often urgent) discussion for those studying these phenomena.
