Today the Association of Internet Researchers opens submissions for #AoIR2023: Revolutions <https://aoir.org/aoir2023/aoir2023cfp/> (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 18-21 October 2023) which will take place at the Sonesta Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square <https://www.sonesta.com/us/pennsylvania/philadelphia/sonesta-philadelphia-r…>. *The deadline for submissions is 1 March 2021 at 11:59 PM UTC. * Similar to last year, at this stage the 2023 AoIR conference is being planned as a Limited Hybrid Conference. The main conference will take place as a face-to-face event in Philadelphia. We are committed to enabling participation by as many AoIR members as possible at some level in this year’s conference. To this end, two of our core events will run in both face-to-face and online versions: the Doctoral Colloquium <https://aoir.org/aoir2023/subtypes/#doccoll> and the Early Career Researcher (ECR) event. Submissions <https://aoir.org/aoir2023/subtypes/> for both modes of the Doctoral Colloquium are open; as with our other preconferences, calls for participation in both modes of the ECR event will be distributed shortly after conference acceptance notifications. We also plan to provide online access for all AoIR members to our larger events (keynote, plenaries, and Annual General Meeting). We are mindful the pandemic is far from over and that we cannot easily predict what the world will look like in October. We are hopeful that COVID-19 be under control and that travel will be possible and desirable for many. We do not pretend that even in the best circumstances travel will be available to everyone, but our options are, in large part, dictated by event contracts signed prior to the pandemic (and which have already, generously, been rolled forward two years after our initial Philadelphia plans in 2022). The workshop will be held in a hybrid format (both in person in Austin, Texas and online). The accepted papers will be presented in-person at the CySoc 2023 workshop and published as in the companion volume of the conference proceedings. This workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners in computer and social sciences from both academia and industry to exchange ideas on understanding the multi-faceted social, psychological, cultural, emotional, communicative, and, linguistic aspects of harmful content while leading the discussion on building novel computational methods to reliably detect, derive meaning from, interpret, understand, and counter them. MOTRA and the Terrorism Research Network (NTF) The collaborative project "Monitoring System and Transfer Platform ‘Radicalization’" (MOTRA) (https://www.motra.info) is a research network in the context of civil security research funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI). The project arose within the framework of establishing a Research Cluster of Excellence on "Early Detection, Prevention and Countering of Islamist Extremism and Terrorism." MOTRA aims to systematically monitor radicalization in Germany, with a particular focus on the development of Islamist extremism and terrorist acts, using multimethod, longitudinal phenomenon/trend analyses and in-depth case analyses. The Terrorism Research Network (NTF, Netzwerk Terrorismusforschung) has been an associated/transfer partner of the MOTRA network since 2019. Call for Papers: "Metaphor & Misinformation: Religion in Media-Driven Worlds" 2023 Conference of the International Society for Media, Religion and Culture Conference location: CERES Bochum (Germany) Conference dates: 2-5 of August 2023 Deadline for Paper proposals: 28 January 2023 [Deadline Extended] Notification of acceptances: End of February 2023 The history of religion, and current debates regarding spirituality, are full of diverse metaphors that are used to communicate complex ideas. Deities are often described as animals or objects that take on human characteristics. Believers are envisioned as a flock or a ship's crew. The religious lives of individuals are explained as a journey, an apprenticeship, a struggle, or a path. These metaphors are woven into myths that help make the intangible accessible and create personal worldviews. Yet in an age of fake news and post-truth, the use of images and narratives can complicate already complex discussions of religion in the mediated public sphere. In light of this, we invite papers that explore the concepts of metaphors and the communication of religious information within media cultures throughout history. We believe these analyses offer an opportunity to explore metaphorical differences and similarities across cultural perspectives. It will also enable a theoretical reflection on the ways in which we use metaphors to conceive of the relationship between media, technology, and religion and the structural implications of the metaphors we use in our scholarly work. Media, for example, has been described by Birgit Meyer and others as devices that bridge the gap between the immanent and transcendent spheres. Other examples include Christian Nationalism, which often envisions political leaders in "messianic" roles working "miracles" using God Talk. Or corporate marketers who create "brand cults" that rely on mythologies, imagery, and indoctrination strategies similar to new religious movements. The historical roots and evolution of these metaphors can bring clarity to the social consequences that we face today. Legacy media created and conceptualized different eras as media "worlds." "Miscommunication" becomes the narrative for explaining fake news, religion-like conspiracy theories, or filter bubbles. Importantly, metaphors form the elementary parts of our linguistic communication, which evoke religious beliefs and ethos for different groups. Religious concepts such as conversion or redemption, which are linked to religious experiences, carry with them mixed messages that can be easily skewed or weaponized when transitioned into secular media discourses. We are also interested in papers from religious communicators, and encourage collaborations with those in the fields of history, theology, semiotics, linguistics, philosophy, and popular culture to reflect on these themes. For example, how do media outlets and influencers use metaphors to teach or discuss meaning, purpose, or influence? What is the outcome of these framings? With the relaxing of COVID-19 restrictions, this conference will serve as the biennial meeting of the International Society for Media, Religion, and Culture, with the aim of exploring these issues from a range of disciplinary perspectives. Since its first meeting back in 1996, the conference has become the leading international gathering for the discussion of research in religion, media, and culture. Recently, ethical aspects related to technology have come to the forefront, including the inherent limitations of technology, particularly related to Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine learning (ML). Further, AI has a known diversity problem where age-inclusion can be sometimes forgotten. While various global and national policy frameworks on Children and AI are being developed, the approaches are child-centered but not child-led, restricting children from affecting their own digital futures. Further still, there is little discussion with children on the limitations, inherent biases, and lack of diversity in current design and development of AI/ML. As AI evolves to mimic human-like cognition, emotions, conversations, and decision-making, its impact on children and their futures should be critically examined for, with, and by children. Therefore, we invite researchers working on the various challenges and opportunities related to Children and AI/ ML to submit their work to this special issue. We welcome research that includes children as equal partners and empowers them to consider present and future challenges as experts of their own lives, with diverse interests, backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. *** Last Mile for Paper Submission *** UMAP ’23: 31st ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization June 26 - 29, 2023, St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus https://www.um.org/umap2023/ ACM UMAP is the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users or groups of users, and that collect, represent, and model user information. ACM UMAP is sponsored by ACM SIGCHI and SIGWEB. User Modeling Inc., as the core Steering Committee, oversees the conference organization. The proceedings, published by ACM, will be part of the ACM Digital Library. The theme of UMAP 2023 is "Personalization in Times of Crisis”. Specifically, we welcome submissions that highlight the impact that critical periods (such as the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing wars, and climate change, to name a few) can have on user modeling, personalization, and adaptation of (intelligent) systems; the focus is on investigations that capture how these trying times may have influenced user behavior and whether new models are required. While we encourage submissions related to this theme, the scope of the conference is not limited to the theme only. As always, contributions from academia, industry, and other organizations discussing open challenges or novel research approaches are expected to be supported by rigorous evidence appropriate to the claims (e.g., user study, system evaluation, computational analysis). Personalized Recommender Systems This track invites works from researchers and practitioners on recommender systems. In addition to mature research works addressing technical aspects of recommendations, we welcome research contributions that address questions related to user perception, decision-making, and the business value of recommender systems. Knowledge Graphs, Semantics, Social and Adaptive Web This track welcomes works focused on the use of knowledge representations (i.e., novel knowledge bases), graph algorithms (i.e., graph embedding techniques), and social network analysis at the service of addressing all aspects of personalization, user model building, and personal experience in online social systems. Moreover, this track invites works in adaptive hypermedia, as well as semantic and social web. Intelligent User Interfaces This track invites works exploring how to make the interaction between computers and people smarter and more productive, leveraging solutions from human-computer interaction, data mining, natural language processing, information visualization, and knowledge representation and reasoning. Personalizing Learning Experiences through User Modeling This track invites researchers, developers, and practitioners from various disciplines to submit their innovative learning solutions, share acquired experiences, and discuss their modeling challenges for personalized adaptive learning. Responsibility, Compliance, and Ethics Researchers, developers, and practitioners have a social responsibility to account for the impact that technologies have on individuals (users, providers, and other stakeholders) and society. This track invites works related to the science of building, maintaining, evaluating, and studying adaptive systems that are fair, transparent, respectful of users’ privacy, and beneficial to society. Personalization for Persuasive and Behavior Change Systems This track invites submissions focused on personalization and tailoring for persuasive technologies, including but not limited to personalization models, user models, computational personalization, design, and evaluation methods. It also welcomes work that brings attention to the user experience and designing personalized and adaptive behavior change technologies. Virtual Assistants, Conversational Interactions, and Personalized Human-robot Interaction This track invites works investigating new models and techniques for adapting synthetic companions (e.g., virtual assistants, chatbots, social robots) to individual users. With the conversational modality so in vogue across disciplines, this track welcomes work highlighting the model and deployment of synthetic companions driven by conversational search and recommendation paradigms. Research Methods and Reproducibility This track invites submissions on methodologies to evaluate personalized systems, benchmarks, and measurement scales, with particular attention to the reproducibility of results and techniques. Furthermore, the track looks for submissions that report new insights from reproducing existing works. SUBMISSION AND REVIEW PROCESS Submissions for any of the aforementioned tracks should have a maximum length of *14 pages* (excluding references) in the ACM new single-column format (https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) (Papers of any length up to 14 pages are encouraged; reviewers will comment on whether the size is appropriate for the contribution.) The submission link is: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=umap23 . Accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings and presented at the conference. At least one author should register for the conference by the early registration date cut-off. UMAP uses a *double-blind* review process. Authors must omit their names and affiliations from their submissions; they should also avoid obvious identifying statements. For instance, citations to the authors' prior work should be in the third person. Submissions not abiding by anonymity requirements will be desk rejected. UMAP has a *no dual submission* policy, which is why full paper submissions should not be currently under review at another publication venue.
