The workshops provide a venue to discuss and explore emerging areas of User Modeling and Adaptive Hypermedia research with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from industry and academia. In this edition, our goal is to have a balanced workshop program comprising different workshop formats, combining newly emerging, currently evolving and established research topics. Different full-day and half-day workshop schemas are possible, such as: ● Working group meetings around a specific problem or topic; participants may be asked to submit a white paper or position statement ● Mini-conferences on specialized topics, having their own paper submission and review processes ● Mini-competitions or challenges around selected topics with individual or team participation ● Interactive discussion meetings focusing on subtopics of the UMAP general research topics ● Joint panels for different workshops We encourage both researchers and industry practitioners to submit workshop proposals. Researchers interested in submitting a workshop proposal are invited to contact us in advance, so we can help to design successful proposals. In particular, for workshop proposals with novel interactive formats, we are happy to assist in further developing and implementing the ideas. We strongly suggest involving organizers from different institutions, bringing different perspectives to the workshop topic. We welcome workshops with a creative structure that may attract various types of contributions and may ensure rich interactions. The organizers of accepted workshops will prepare a workshop web site containing the call for papers and detailed information about the workshop organization and timeline. They will be responsible for their own publicity and reviewing processes. There will be a conference adjunct proceedings published by ACM where all the workshop papers will be published. Hence, the workshop organizers will need to adhere to the adjunct proceedings publication timeline. For some, AI is being positioned as a fix to our social problems, which in turn will change how we live, communicate, work and travel. Others raise substantive concerns that these developments might reinforce inequality, exacerbate the opacity of decision-making processes, and ultimately question human autonomy. We are thus living in a time when the infrastructures and institutions of our everyday lives are being (re)built at the hands of techniques which already elude popular and professional understanding; but while the controversies about the specific pathways to be taken are still visible, we can already perceive elements of closure and institutionalization. Our symposium invites contributions from an international audience to interrogate the shaping of AI. New Open Access Book: Erving Goffman’s 1953 dissertation, Communication Conduct in an Island Community

We are excited to announce the publication of Erving Goffman’s remarkable 1953 dissertation, Communication Conduct in an Island Community: https://www.mediastudies.press/communication-conduct-in-an-island-community Canadian-born Erving Goffman (1922–1982) was the twentieth century’s most important sociologist writing in English. His 1953 dissertation is published here for the first time, on the hundredth anniversary of his birth. The study, based on fieldwork on a remote Scottish island, presents in embryonic form the full spread of Goffman’s thought. Framed as a “report on a study of conversational interaction,” the dissertation lingers on the modest talk of island “crofters.” It is trademark Goffman: ambitious, unconventional in form, and brimmed with big-picture insight. The thesis is that social order is made and re-made in communication—the “interaction order” he re-visited in a famous and final talk before his 1982 death. The dissertation is, as Yves Winkin writes in a new introduction, the “Rosetta stone for his entire work.” It was here, in 360 dense pages, that Goffman revealed, quietly, his peerless sensitivity to the invisible wireframes of everyday life. In an infamous article from 2008 the editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine argued that ‘big data’ made the scientific method obsolete. While hype about the data deluge has become more nuanced since then, it is undeniable that digital data has led to profound transformations in social scientific methodology. Disciplines and fields such as Data Science, Computational Social Science, Critical Data Studies and Web Science have transformed the landscape of the social sciences. What do these changes mean for educational research and educational practice? The field of Educational Data Science has grown rapidly in recent years but there are still large pockets of educational research in which qualitative, ethnographic and theoretical approaches predominate. What role can computational methods play within traditions of inquiry which have tended to forego quantification? What are the strengths and limitations of computational approaches? How do they differ from traditional quantitative methods? What should the methodological toolkit of the educational researcher look like in an era of abundant digital data? In the first DTCE Digital Dialogue we’re pleased to welcome three leading experts in the field for a debate about computational methods and the future of educational research. We are therefore inviting scholars to propose books that they wish to review. Book reviews can be solicited by the editor or offered unsolicited by prospective reviewers. Calls for book reviews related to a specific theme issue will appear on this site from time to time. General reviews are welcome at all times.
