Hi all — I emailed the list earlier in the year asking if anyone knew of any bibliographies of 1) books, specifically 2) in the field of Internet Studies, broadly defined. The reason for my question was I’m asking my students to write a book review of a monograph in the field for my class <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rshp8enFUQ2_vfuSHN88twwQXxXiDRYx_NTPU2i…> this spring, and wanted to give them a resource so they could find something in their interest area. A few people responded asking me to let them know if I found anything, but I didn’t, nor could my departmental librarian. There are plenty of syllabi for a topic area across many forms of scholarship (articles, books, films, etc), but nothing I could find for books, specifically. So my TA and I built a Google Form <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf_WaVIdg9Rh--nodpMWYKpLSj03zxouh5…> to help us make one. If you enter in the ISBN number of a book, it queries the Google Books API and populates the results to a public spreadsheet here <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ik83LPyjjqQLfWim53CEObnXdiVDqSkGJ0l…>. It pulls in the book description (from the publisher) and the subject areas (from the LoC), so that it is (reasonably) searchable. My TA and I just started entering in some books from our syllabus and some books that popped into our head, but I wanted to send it out to AoIR in case anyone here wants to contribute or use the list. If you want to contribute — please do! We’ve tried to make it as easy as possible, and you should definitely blast your own books into here, or those of friends, or whatever. It’s a work in progress and we’ll be figuring it out as we go along but hopefully it’s a helpful resource for someone (beyond just my students this term). Best, — Chris

Dear Air-L community, We invite applications to the Communication and Information Sciences (CIS) PhD program at the University of Hawaii. Please forward this to potential students. Founded in 1986 to educate leaders at the nexus of technology and society, CIS is one of the first interdisciplinary programs of its kind in the country. It is sponsored by four units across three colleges: Information and Computer Sciences (College of Natural Sciences) the School of Communications and department of Library and Information Science (College of Social Sciences), and Information Technology Management (College of Business). The program is structured for interdisciplinary experience across these fields. Curricular focus areas and faculty research expertise currently include Communication & Information Theories, Community Engagement, Data Science, Digital Business Transformation, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Policy & Planning, and Social Informatics (including Social Media studies). *** Last Call for Papers *** UMAP ’23: 31st ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization June 26 - 29, 2023, St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus https://www.um.org/umap2023/ ACM UMAP is the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users or groups of users, and that collect, represent, and model user information. ACM UMAP is sponsored by ACM SIGCHI and SIGWEB. User Modeling Inc., as the core Steering Committee, oversees the conference organization. The proceedings, published by ACM, will be part of the ACM Digital Library. The theme of UMAP 2023 is "Personalization in Times of Crisis”. Specifically, we welcome submissions that highlight the impact that critical periods (such as the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing wars, and climate change, to name a few) can have on user modeling, personalization, and adaptation of (intelligent) systems; the focus is on investigations that capture how these trying times may have influenced user behavior and whether new models are required. With the conversational modality so in vogue across disciplines, this track welcomes work highlighting the model and deployment of synthetic companions driven by conversational search and recommendation paradigms. Research Methods and Reproducibility This track invites submissions on methodologies to evaluate personalized systems, benchmarks, and measurement scales, with particular attention to the reproducibility of results and techniques. Furthermore, the track looks for submissions that report new insights from reproducing existing works. Scholarship is expected to have clear implications for policy – whether for federal agencies, international treaty organizations, Internet and/or platform governance, standard-setting organizations, NGOs, or other major sites of governance and policy. The candidate should already have a solid publication track record in scholarly venues, whether in books or articles. For American University, this hire will be part of our leadership position on policy and digital platforms and will connect several schools. We particularly seek a collaborative leader who will work across disciplines, including to our prominent law school, with our peers in computer science, and possibly with industry. *** First Call for Workshop Proposals *** 19th IEEE eScience Conference (eScience 2023) October 9-13, 2023, St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus https://www.escience-conference.org/2023/ The 19th IEEE eScience Conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus on October 9-13, 2023. eScience 2023 welcomes proposals for workshops to be co-located with the main conference on Monday, October 9 and Tuesday, October 10, 2023. The eScience conference has a long history of hosting well-attended workshops broadly related to eScience and co-located with the main conference. These workshops share the goal of bringing together international and interdisciplinary research communities, developers, and users of eScience applications and enabling IT technologies. Workshops play a crucial role in the conference by providing an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to present their work in a more focused way than the conference itself and to have in-depth discussions of particular topics of interest to the community. Workshops may be focused on any eScience-related topic including, but not limited to interdisciplinary and translational research, continuum computing infrastructures, data science, sustainability, and education. eScience 2023 invites authors of workshop proposals to consider a diverse group of organizers, paper reviewers, and keynote speakers in terms of race/ethnicity, gender, and geographic areas. eScience 2023 accepts two types of workshop proposals: (1) workshops with peer-reviewed papers and proceedings, and (2) workshops or mini-symposia with invited talks and no proceedings. Workshops with peer-reviewed papers and proceedings The proceedings of workshops with peer-reviewed papers will be included in the eScience 2023 proceedings to be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press, USA and made available online through the IEEE Digital Library, if the following criteria are followed: • The solicitation for papers must be open. • All the papers must be peer-reviewed by a qualified Program Committee. • The workshops Program Committee must have an appropriate size for the expected number of submissions. • The workshop proceedings must have at least 4 papers at a length of at least 6 pages and no longer than 10 pages (including figure, tables, and citations) in the IEEE conference format. • For each paper selected for publication, at least one of the authors must be registered to eScience 2023 to present the paper in person. Workshop organizers are responsible for establishing a Program Committee and a paper submission system, collecting and evaluating submissions, notifying authors of acceptance or rejection in due time, ensuring a transparent and fair selection process, organizing selected papers into sessions, and assigning session chairs. Proposals showing clear focus and objectives in areas of emerging or developing interest will be prioritized. Workshop proposals should be submitted via email to workshops(a)escience-conference.org and not exceed 5 pages in length. *** First Call for Papers *** 19th IEEE eScience Conference (eScience 2023) October 9-13, 2023, St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus https://www.escience-conference.org/2023/ eScience 2023 provides an interdisciplinary forum for researchers, developers, and users of eScience applications and enabling IT technologies. Its objective is to promote and encourage all aspects of eScience and its associated technologies, applications, algorithms, and tools, with a strong focus on practical solutions and open challenges. The conference welcomes conceptualization, implementation, and experience contributions enabling and driving innovation in data- and compute-intensive research across all disciplines, from the physical and biological sciences to the social sciences, arts, and humanities; encompassing artificial intelligence and machine learning methods; and targeting a broad spectrum of architectures, including HPC, Cloud, and IoT. The overarching theme of the eScience 2023 conference is “open eScience”. Website: https://sites.google.com/view/hri-failure-ws/home What happens when robots fail? How does this impact human expectations of social robots? What if encountering a robot who is a little less than perfect might actually make it more relatable? Focusing on failure as a way to improve human-robot interactions represents a novel approach that calls into question human expectations of robots, as well as posing ethical and methodological challenges to researchers. In this space, interdisciplinary conversations are the key to untangling these challenges and bringing themes of power and context into view. We welcome authors and participants from multiple fields including, but not limited to, Social Robotics, Human-Robot Interaction, Design, Philosophy, Psychology, Science & Technology Studies, Media Studies and Gender Studies. Topics for discussion at this half-day workshop might include: • Methods for studying failure (both robotic failures, but also ways of understanding human responses to failure) • Failures as a way to explore norms around assumed bodies and behaviours in the human-robot interaction • Detecting failure – how can a robot know it has failed? • Different kinds of failures – recognition, proximity, mechanical – and the impact on the interaction • Human tolerance for robotic failure – precise measurements for industrial robots (target radius, for example) as compared to social robots where what counts as “failure” may be harder to define • Popular culture representations of robots and user assumptions – the gap between fiction and reality • Too good to be true? The uncanny valley, likeability and warts on the noses of our robots • Cross-cultural studies on failures exploring how failures might be sanctioned differently in different cultures • Affective “scaffolding” performed by other humans: helping us to interact with failing robots • The normalization of failure in the robotics community: when does failure become an issue and when is it just “business as usual”? • Planning for failure “in the wild” We welcome anyone who is interested to participate in this workshop. Two year postdoc at the University of Manchester: Digital Technology's Role in Personalised Learning and Assessment

The Digital Technology, Communication and Education (DTCE) Research and Scholarship group in MIE are advertising an exciting full-time Post-Doctoral post exploring digital technology’s role in personalising learning and assessment. The job advert went live yesterday with applications closing on January 31st. The role offers a unique opportunity that sits at the intersection between education, education technology, computer science/software engineering and digital technology for global development. Working closely with colleagues at the EdTech Hub (the world’s largest education technology research initiative), in addition to data scientists and software engineers, the intention is to drive forward research to investigate the potential of digital personalised learning to support learners and teachers (initially based in Kenya). The potential for research impact is large – around 100k learners access the personalised learning tool central to the study daily. Over the past year, the development of this tool has been informed by UoM-led research that is currently being evaluated through a randomised trial featuring 300 schools. This means the successful applicant will form part of a large international team, although they will retain significant autonomy over determining their own research agenda to match their experience and interests.
