Dear all, Hope everyone and your loved ones are doing well. As part of a project connected to MisinfoCon <http://misinfocon.com/> and The Carter Center <http://cartercenter.org/>, and also in conversation with the Secretariat at the Forum on Information and Democracy <https://rsf.org/en/news/eleven-organizations-civil-society-create-forum-inf…>, I have been overseeing a landscape review of current practices related to researchers entering into closed messaging spaces (e.g. WhatsApp, Telegram). This landscape review is intended to inform a set of recommended practices related to closed messaging spaces to be developed in conversation among human rights practitioners, election observers, and fact-checking projects. We are seeking protocols and examples of research practices mentioned in papers, in addition to how these efforts define privacy and public discourse; the particular backdrop has been elections but can be broader. Examples of issues that we are focusing on: * how the study defines *public* and *private* * whether the size of the group matters and how * whether and how the researchers identified themselves * what protocols have been defined related to de-identification of participants, limitation of content collected, and the storage around the datasets * whether the study protocol has been reviewed by an IRB or other external organization Should you have recommendations of papers and reports to include, I would love to hear about them here or off-thread. Critiques of Academic Scholarship

Hi everyone, I’m having difficulty finding some literature on critiques of academia. Key words tend to bring up “critical theory” which I’m sure includes this topic somewhere but it’s a pretty large haystack. Ideally, what I’m looking for are performative aspects of writing which create authorized speech, knowledge production, and expertise. Sort of the Archeology of Knowledge or Signature Event Context/Limited Inc. but applied specifically to academic writing. Style, citations, minimization of limitations, peer review, to name a few. Second call for proposals Datafication and cultural heritage - provocations, threats, and design opportunities A workshop at ECSCW 2020, June 14, in Siegen, Germany. Due to the current situation we will accept remote presentations. Increasing digitization and the emergence of new data sharing practices are likely to change how our understanding of history is negotiated. Archiving practices are not only fundamental for our understanding of the past but vital in navigating the present. We have to pay particular attention to the consequences of the interfaces that curate history, especially in relation to big data. Crowdsourcing, social media, linked open data, and other participatory and open science practices challenge the archiving practices in cultural heritage institutions, but they also open up new opportunities and practices when it comes to understanding and defining our shared culture. In this workshop we will bring together researchers who have studied these issues or are working to develop critical perspectives on archiving practices. Deadline for submissions is April 3, 2020. La Cura VS COVID19

Hi everyone! (I am reposting this from another mailing list because I think that it can interest many here: sorry if I'm wrong) My cancer decided to came back now I'm fine, don't worry: I have had another surgery that went well, and I'm fully recovering but this synchronicity has been really important for those who remember, back in 2012, when I had my first cancer, i used medical data to propose a global repositioning of disease in society: https://www.artisopensource.net/projects/la-cura/ a cure can happen only in the middle of society: that was the synthesis of La Cura, the global performance into which I had transformed my cancer, inspired by visionary innovators such as Franco Basaglia What is, now, La Cura at the time of COVID19? It turns out that it's a really meaningful continuation in the same direction: a cancer and a global pandemic perfectly show the coexistence of two dimensions: the individual and the ecosystem This coexistence has a tragic aspect: the two dimensions can be at open war with each other This was perfectly clear, for example, while being in the hospital: I risked not being able to have my surgery because of the COVID19 situation. This tragic character of the situation is exactly the condition which we'll start to face in the crises that are about to start coming up systematically: climate change, migrations, poverty, health, access and the others. The tragic coexistence between the individual and the ecosytem, and the problems that come with it: which are complex and, thus, irreducible. Complexity doesn't have "solution". It has a life, a way to cope with it, but not a solution in the sense of being able to reduce it to a point. There's no App for it. In today's life we have tried all to try to remove tragedy from our lives. And, instead, this new condition shows us just how much we need this tragic dimension in our lives. As tragedy is complexity, and complexity is tragic and irreducible: it just doesn't go away. And: with/after tragedy comes Agnition: the ability to understand, recognize and transform/adapt. In our world, this tragic dimension has a lot to do with data and computation. The complex phenomena of our planet can be only experieced through enormous quantities and qualities of data, and through the computation needed to collect them, and to processes and represent them. How can I experience climate change (as a global phenomenon, not just because it is hotter in my city)? COV19? Povety? etc Data, data, data, and computation. Understanding this tragic condition, in context, means that data + computation need to be addressed as existential issues, not as technical ones. This means a necessary focus shift towards finding/building the new rituals, times, habits, practices and traditions with which we will learn to inhabit our world through data and computation. This is, for example, what we've been doing with the Datapoiesis project: https://datapoiesis.com/home/ And this is what we will continue to do now, through this tragic continuation of La Cura. We started writing two articles about it: they're in italian for now, but if there's interest and if someone who speaks native english can help me out, we'd love to translate and share. The DC provides an opportunity for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests under the guidance of distinguished researchers from the field. Doctoral students are invited to apply to present their research to experienced scholars who will provide constructive feedback and advice. Students are expected to document in a brief submission their doctoral research (see below described submission information for further details), which will be evaluated by the consortium committee. Good quality applications will be selected for presentation at a Doctoral Consortium Session as part of the conference. Promising, but less well- developed applications will be selected for presentation at a poster session. Each student with an accepted submission will be assigned a mentor who will provide feedback on the student’s work and will discuss the doctoral research with the student and the audience at the consortium. SUBMISSION AND REVIEW PROCESS ============================ To apply for the ACM UMAP 2020 doctoral consortium, students should submit a paper presenting their doctoral research organized under the following headings: - Research Problem. The problem being addressed and a motivation outlining the relevance of the problem; - Related Work. Work already performed by other researchers related to this problem. This should situate your work, showing your knowledge of the relevant previous work and how your work will make a new contribution; - Research Questions and Proposed Approach. The main questions the PhD project aims to answer, contributions it aims to achieve, and the thesis methodology; - Progress to Date and Future Work. The progress made to date (including a clear description of the approach, methodology and preliminary results) as well as the plan for further research. Topics include (but are not limited to) the ACM UMAP 2020 key areas. Each DC submission should cover: identification of related (state of the art) work, indication of the potential innovation, application or advancement of the state-of-the-art that the work intends to achieve. In addition, as appropriate for the PhD project, each submission may cover: indication of data to be used for experimentation, indication of implementation approach, indication of evaluation criteria and experimental design. Each DC paper submission should be accompanied by a cover page that states: the paper title, name of the PhD candidate, the name of his/her supervisor(s) and University, a paragraph describing the stage they are in the PhD programme, together with a brief description of their background. This will enable the committee to adapt its assistance to each student. The DC will be most useful to students who have completed enough of their thesis work to have a solid foundation with a clear topic and literature review but the student should be early enough in their studies to still benefit from guidance and advice. FWIW others are also active in this research area at the moment (see Birkinbine 2020, Lund & Zukerfeld 2020). cheers Mathieu ‘Open source has won and lost the war’: Legitimising commercial–communal hybridisation in a FOSS project by Mathieu O’Neil, Laure Muselli, Mahin Raissi and Stefano Zacchiroli, New Media & Society. Summary: Information technology (IT) firms are paying developers in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects, leading to the emergence of hybrid forms of work. In order to understand how the firm–project hybridisation process occurs, we present the results of an online survey of participants in the Debian project, as well as interviews with Debian Developers. We find that the intermingling of the commercial logic of the firm and the communal logic of the project requires rhetorical legitimation. We analyse the discourses used to legitimise firm–project cooperation as well as the organisational mechanisms which facilitate this cooperation. A first phase of legitimation, based on firm adoption of open licenses and developer self-fulfilment, aims to erase the commercial/communal divide. A second more recent phase seeks to professionalise work relations inside the project and, in doing so, challenges the social order which restricts participation in FOSS.
