The 5th International Conference on Real-Time Intelligent Systems (RTIS 2020) Casino Barriere, Biarritz, France June 30-July 03, 2020 www.socio.org.uk/rtis The International Conference on Real-time Intelligent Systems (RTIS) has travelled from Zhuhai, China (2019), Taipei, Taiwan (2018), Casablanca, Morocco (2017), to Beijing, China (2016). The 5th RTIS will take place at Biarritz, a luxurious seaside tourist destination on the Bay of Biscay in the French Basque Country. Over the last few years real-time intelligent computing has radically transformed human life style. Research on real-time intelligent systems is of multi-disciplinary nature, exploiting concepts from diverse areas such as big data processing, computational intelligence, location based services, recommendation systems, multimedia processing, among others. In today’s highly dynamic environment, analyzing data in real time is a must to understand how systems are processing data, to reason the outputs and to anticipate trends in intelligent computing. To this end, this conference will serve as a platform to manifest the ongoing research in the field. Inspired by the release of the Routledge Companion to Urban Media and Communication, Charlotte Brundson (Warwick), Zlatan Krajina (Zagreb), David Rowe (Western Sydney), Deborah Stevenson (Western Sydney) and Scott Rodgers (Birkbeck) explore the genealogies, present tendencies and future possibilities of the urban as a key locus for the increasingly diverse fields that compose media, communication and cultural studies. The new Routledge Companion provides a thought-provoking lens into the process of academic knowledge production in a fast-changing research area. The result of a multi-year process, its resulting 44 chapters are notably wide ranging, taking in the urban-mediated dimensions of everything from architecture, infrastructure, digitalisation and regeneration to globalisation, identity, consumption and branding. On first blush, the book seems to aspire at being comprehensive, even encyclopaedic; but on closer inspection, its chapter authors also clearly orient themselves to the current moment. One aim for this symposium is to consider the inherent tensions that seem to be at play in a book like this, between for example old and new media forms, as well as longstanding and emerging ways of studying and conceptualising media, communication and culture. Yet we will also go beyond the book and consider what it represents more generally. Why has the urban become such an important lens into media now? Have particular, immanent features of urbanisation and mediatisation in the 21st Century encouraged and indeed necessitated this growing field? Might it also be that trends in the academy, such as for example the valorisation of inter- or trans-disciplinarity, are part of the explanation as well? It has been widely accepted that digital ecosystems have a 'language and geocultural diversity' problem - at present they have a strong bias towards firstly English, and then a small group of (mostly European) languages. A series of initiatives has attempted to address this imbalance in a variety of ways, whether driven by practice (language diversity guidelines, multilingual toolkits, open data repositories, and endangered languages archives) or theory (biocultural diversity, digital modern languages and translingual/transcultural critiques). This two-day workshop brings together leading researchers, educators, digital practitioners, language-focused professionals, policy makers and other interested parties to address the challenges of multilingualism in digital spaces and to collectively propose new models and solutions. The workshop will combine both conceptual (strategy, policy and theory) and practical perspectives (digital ecosystems, methods and tools with a focus on language). It aims to strengthen connections between numerous overlapping digital and languages-driven conversations and initiatives. The core themes of the workshop are: * Linguistic and geocultural diversity in digital knowledge infrastructures * Working with multilingual data * Transcultural and translingual approaches to digital study * Artificial intelligence, machine learning and NLP in language worlds The programme will feature a variety of formats, including lightning talks, posters, demos, roundtables and (a limited amount of) mini-workshops, and we welcome proposals for experimental formats. Invited speakers will represent a range of education, industry and third sector roles and we are open to new ideas through our call for proposals. The workshop is aimed at those interested in multilingual and cross-cultural approaches to digital practice, and is likely to be of particular interest to those working in the areas of: modern languages and linguistics; multilingualism research (including endangered or minority languages and community languages); digital cultural heritage; digital humanities; new media and internet research; critical digital infrastructure studies; digital policy; translation studies; AI, machine learning and NLP. Co-convenors This workshop is led by the Language Acts and Worldmaking project with the support of the Cross-Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community project, both funded by the AHRC under its Open World Research Initiative. Virtual participation The event is principally designed for physical face-to-face participation, but we are open to collaboration with individuals or groups who wish to participate remotely. Key dates Call for proposals deadline: 12pm (GMT) on 16 March 2020 Response to proposals: 30 March 2020 Workshop: Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 June 2020 Languages Abstracts: the main workshop language will be English, but once reviewed, we welcome translations of accepted abstracts. At the event: we recommend that presenters consult the GO::DH Translation toolkit (https://go-dh.github.io/translation-toolkit/conferences/<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgo-dh.git…>) and we welcome creative proposals for those wishing to work multilingually during the event Outcomes Where possible, outcomes (including, for example, reports, posters or prototypes) will be published on the event website after the workshop.
