Acquiring training on big data research
by Luis Hestres 20 Dec '18

20 Dec '18

Hello AoIR, I’m writing a faculty development leave (aka sabbatical) proposal to acquire training on big data research. Ideally this would include all aspects of big data research, from data acquisition to modes of analysis like social network analysis. In my proposal I’ll have to list specific resources, such as books, tutorials, MOOCs, etc. that I will draw upon to gain this knowledge. Can you recommend some resources I could include in my proposal? Thanks, Luis - - - - - Dr. Luis E. New Book: Appified: Culture in the Age of Apps
by Jeremy Morris 20 Dec '18

20 Dec '18

Normally I’d apologize for the self-promo, but since 1 great co-editor and 32 other amazing authors were involved (many AoIR regulars!), I’ll just forge ahead. We're very excited to let you know "Appified: Culture in the Age of Apps" is officially out. We asked each author to write a critical-cultural review of a single app and then use that as a starting point to connect to issues in digital culture more broadly. You can find out more about the collection at the University of Michigan Press site <https://www.press.umich.edu/9391658/appified> (h/t to Mary Francis, our editor) and while we’re likely too late to make it on to any of your holiday gift lists, we’re hoping it’ll be of some value for courses next semester. We’ve attached a brief summary of the TOC below, but email me if you need any more info on (or access to) any of the chapters: App Annie - Patrick Vonderau Ashley Madison - Ben Light Tencent MyApp (Yingyong Bao) - Luzhou Nina Li Exodus International - Tarleton Gillespie TaskRabbit - Sarah Sharma Carrot - Sarah Murray See Send - Greg Elmer and Bahar Nasirzadeh Is It Tuesday? - Jeremy Morris LoseIt! - Natasha Schüll Fitbit - Kate O’Riordan Tinder - Stefanie Duguay Hollaback! - Carrie Rentschler The Sex Offender Tracker App - Sharif Mowlabocus Companion - Elizabeth Ellcessor Yik Yak - Tamara Shepherd and Christopher Cwynar WeChat - Finn Brunton Snapchat - Jill Walker Rettberg Foursquare - Germaine Halegoua WhatsApp - Radhika Gajjala and Tarishi Verma This. From the popular to the forgotten, from casual games to rape reporting, these chapters weave a rich tapestry of the multiple meanings of apps for politics, society, and everyday life.” —Amelia Arsenault, Georgia State University “Morris and Murray have assembled an all-star cast to reveal the spectacular power of the software in all of our pockets. Appified is an essential collection for students and scholars of digital media culture, and all who seek to understand the indelible imprint of apps on our daily lives.” —Jennifer Holt, University of California, Santa Barbara That’s all. digital infrastructure that supports language diversity
by Isabelle Zaugg 20 Dec '18

20 Dec '18

Dear all, A colleague of mine is organizing an event on the topic of digital infrastructures for language justice/diversity. I've helped her as much as I could, but thought our network might have other suggestions of resources/scholars. She is particularly interested in finding work that talks at a philosophical level about how digital infrastructure allows/disallows for language diversity in the digital sphere. Thank you, Isabelle

Call for Submission 4S 2019 Open Panel: STS, Knowledge Production, Policing and Criminal Justice
by Fieke Jansen 20 Dec '18

20 Dec '18

Dear colleagues, Just before the holidays, I wanted to share our call for submissions to the 4S open panel 153 “STS And Computational Knowledge Production In Policing And Criminal Justice” Recent innovations in technologies and processes of data analysis and computational science – mainly in reference to terms (and myths) like big data, algorithmic decision making and artificial intelligence – have transformed many processes of knowledge production in the fields of policing and criminal justice. With predictive policing as one of its earliest and most prominent representatives (Perry et al. 2013; Bennett Moses & Chan, 2018), the algorithmic mediated production of (prospective) knowledge has now also affected the criminal justice system at every level. Different predictive models include generating risky spaces – PredPol (Mohler et al., 2015); risky individuals – Chicago’s ‘strategic subject list’ (Saunders/Hunt/Hollywood, 2016) and US’ Computer-Assisted Passenger Pre-screening System; or calculating the recidivism risk of convicted offenders in order to inform the sentence decision (predictive prosecution) (Ferguson, 2016). This development has gone hand-in-hand with a rapid technological expansion from the frontline to the back office. Thus, regardless of whether suspects or spaces are objects of (predictive) knowledge production, or if recidivism risk scores for convicted offenders are generated, in the end, policing and justice are increasingly characterized by socio-technical interwovenness with digital data production and algorithmic technologies. This calls for a thorough STS analysis to get at the innovations, interruptions, regenerations, successes and failures herein involved in the co-construction of policing practices and technological development. Correspondingly, this panel seeks to ask how STS can provide analytical tools for grasping the entanglement of technology and society involved in the development and implementation of computational knowledge production in policing and criminal justice. Deadline: February 1, 2019 Submissions: https://www.4s2019.org/accepted-open-panels/ We are looking forward to your proposals! Call for Contributions: iConference workshop in Washington, DC, March 31st, 2019
by Violeta Trkulja 19 Dec '18

19 Dec '18

Dear colleagues, We invite you to submit your research to our workshop. Please find below a call for contributions and send it to interested colleagues. Apologies for cross posting. Thank you and kind regards, Juliane Stiller, Nadia Caidi, Violeta Trkulja and Syed Ishtique Ahmed *Charting the Future of Forced Migration Research in Information Science* This is a call for contributions for a full-day workshop at the 2019 iConference to be held in Washington, DC United States, on Sunday, March 31st, 2019. Information as a research object in the area of forced migration[1] and vice versa, forced migration in the information science domain, is only slowly gaining attention and has not yet been addressed in an interdisciplinary research environment. Information science provides a perfect lens through which to examine a range of forced migration-related issues, practices, and methodologies. In the workshop, we would like to bring together researchers from the information fields broadly construed, along with researchers in related disciplines to showcase the range of areas, practices and methodologies available to research forced migration. The aim is to introduce our IS colleagues to other research in related disciplines, as well as acculturate our colleagues from other disciplines into the rich research context and frameworks in information science. Throughout the workshop, attendees will be able to examine these research questions, focusing on one of the two following themes: +Information spaces of refugees -navigating the information environments in new and/or transitional countries -operational knowledge about information practices in different contexts -making space for refugees -evolving services provided by (public) libraries and other information professionals in the context of forced migration +Digitally-mediated environments of refugees -information-related skills and strategies that facilitate access to information -the role of social media and online spaces as sources of information and in creating and regaining a sense of place -role and/or importance of access to ICT for refugees -credibility and assessment issues; multilingual interactions; user-generated content The workshop will feature a panel, lightning talks and engagement sessions. +Abstract Submission The workshop welcomes submissions for presenting a lightning talk of 15 minutes in one of the main themes of the workshop: Information spaces of refugees and digitally-mediated environments for refugees. Each lightning talk session will be followed by an interactive engagement with part of the audience led by the speaker. When submitting an abstract for a talk, please state your plan for an interactive session that encourages audience commentary and engagement. Please plan for no more than 30 minutes. Your submission should include the following things: -abstract of your lightning talk with up to 300 words -short description of your audience engagement idea with no more than 200 words. Please send your submission to iconf2019-forcedmigrationws(a)lists.hu-berlin.de *Important Dates* -Abstract submission deadline: Jan 15th, 2019 -Notification of acceptance: Feb 15th, 2019 Knowledge Dissemination – Special Issue of IJIDI In addition to the Workshop, we will also produce a Special Issue in the International Journal for Information, Diversity and Inclusion (IJIDI) on the theme of the future of forced migration in information science. We welcome full research papers that make a novel contribution to this area of research (e.g., empirical, theory-based, methodological, comparative), and we seek a broad spectrum of submissions from workshop attendees as well as those who are not able to attend the workshop. The Special Issue will also have a special section for student work, works in progress, opinion pieces, and professional reports. Deadlines for the Special Issue of IJIDI: Extended abstracts of up to 1,000 words for full research papers and up to 500 words for contributions to the special section are due by April 30, 2019. Authors will be notified of acceptance by May 30, 2019. The final papers will be due by October 15, 2019. Publication scheduled for the April 2020 issue.
