Call for Papers - Visual, digital and media culture: Images among generations - vista - visual culture journal
by Inês Amaral 16 Dec '18

16 Dec '18

[With apologies for cross posting] *CALL FOR PAPERS - vista - visual culture journal* *“Visual, digital and media culture: Images among generations”* Social context determined by the culture of media convergence, together with the proliferation of digital devices connected to the Internet and their penetration among citizens, has given relevance, more than ever, to the media and visual culture. Digital media and images have conducted visual field towards the study of consumer´s practices and producer´s image, in accordance with the social aspects and the cultural contexts that characterize them. To the multidisciplinary approach of media and digital literacy, intergenerational issue is added as the starting point of this issue, which seeks to delve into the fact that the media experience occurs in differentiated conditions, characterized by different cultural (media and digital) competences between generations: analogical and digital citizens, emigrants and digital natives. From the family portraits to the selfies of our smartphones, from soap opera and TV series to social networks. Images produced and consumed get increased from a diversity of experiences and memories, from a multiplicity of lifestyles and media uses, which is worth to be rethought from the idea of "generations". Which are the visual environments of socialization for the different generations? What influences do they exercise in their daily lives, in their experience, and in their memory? What is the role of visual and media literacy in the process of understanding the relationship between different generations and the different media? How visual culture contributes to the pedagogical processes? Does the generational perspective contribute for the understanding of the image transformation and impact in contemporaneity? Is the visual culture an approaching element among generations? Which are the more suited proposals and theoretical reflections in the current context? Is the visual culture an inspiring element to favor participative methodologies in this field? Can digital age and its visual culture favor generational barriers? Does the digital visual culture assume an intergenerational perspective? *vista - visual culture journal *is a peer-reviewed journal and operates under a double-blind review process. Each submitted work will be sent to two reviewers previously invited to evaluate it, in accordance with the academic quality, originality and relevance for the objectives and scope of the issue of this edition of the journal. RIDING THE WAVES: Pre-ICA conference accepts abstracts
by Matei, Sorin Adam 13 Dec '18

13 Dec '18

Dear colleagues, Purdue University, Sorbonne Nouvelle, and University of Paris would like to extend an invitation to you and to any of your interested colleagues to the pre-ICA conference: Riding or Lashing the Waves: Regulating Media for Diversity in a Time of Uncertainty National Press Club Washington, DC, United States, May 24, 2019 https://easychair.org/cfp/RIDING19 This will be a high-density conversation with politicians, academics, and regulators from both sides of the Atlantic about an issue that preoccupies us all: can social media maintain a diverse, yet civil and trustworthy conversation? With the increase in technology over the past 20 years the term “mass media” has morphed to cover a chaotic maze of broad and narrowcast media, both local and global. The rise of new instruments of mass communication including instant messaging apps, blogging and vlogging, podcasting, live broadcasting using mobile phones, and screen capture videos have all broadened the definition of the term “mass media”. With all of this change - what are the regulatory, policy, and production rules that can make future media diverse, embracing pluralism of perspectives and ideas, user-focused and civically-responsible, while remaining profitable? In other words, what legal frameworks, organizational innovations, self-regulation ideas or technologies can be or should not be used to maintain diversity and sustainability? Please visit https://easychair.org/cfp/RIDING19 for further information and submission guidelines. We accept both abstracts and full papers. Feel free to distribute this widely. New book - The Digital Edge: How Black and Latino Youth Navigate Digital Inequality
by Jacqueline Vickery 13 Dec '18

13 Dec '18

Wanted to make the community aware of a new book that was officially released last week (paperback and Kindle editions available) *The Digital Edge: How Black and Latino Youth Navigate Digital Inequality *(NYU Press) by S. Craig Watkins, Andres Lombana-Bermudez, Alexander Cho, Jacqueline Ryan Vickery, Vivian Shaw, and Lauren Weinzimmer. https://nyupress.org/books/9781479849857/ *The Digital Edge* examines how the digital and social-media lives of low-income youth, especially youth of color, have evolved amidst rapid social and technological change. While notions of the digital divide between the “technology rich” and the “technology poor” have largely focused on access to new media technologies, the contours of the digital divide have grown increasingly complex. Analyzing data from a year‐long ethnographic study at Freeway High School, the authors investigate how the digital media ecologies and practices of black and Latino youth have adapted as a result of the wider diffusion of the internet all around us--in homes, at school, and in the palm of our hands. Their eager adoption of different technologies forge new possibilities for learning and creating that recognize the collective power of youth: peer networks, inventive uses of technology, and impassioned interests that are remaking the digital world. Relying on nearly three hundred in-depth interviews with students, teachers, and parents, and hundreds of hours of observation in technology classes and after school programs, The Digital Edge carefully documents some of the emergent challenges for creating a more equitable digital and educational future. Focusing on the complex interactions between race, class, gender, geography and social inequality, the book explores the educational perils and possibilities of the expansion of digital media into the lives and learning environments of low-income youth. Ultimately, the book addresses how schools can support the ability of students to develop the social, technological, and educational skills required to navigate twenty-first century life. *Dr. Jacqueline Ryan **Vickery* Associate Professor | Graduate Director Department of Media Arts College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences University of North Texas http://jrvickery.com *"Let us go forth with fear and courage and rage to save the world." - **Grace Paley*

Book Announcement - Blogging My Religion
by Giulia Evolvi 13 Dec '18

13 Dec '18

Dear All, I am very pleased to announce the publication of my book: Blogging my Religion: Secular, Muslim, and Catholic Media Spaces in Europe Giulia Evolvi https://www.routledge.com/Blogging-My-Religion-Secular-Muslim-and-Catholic-… *Summary* Religion in Europe is currently undergoing changes that are reconfiguring physical and virtual spaces of practice and belief, and these changes need to be understood with regards to the proliferation of digital media discourses. This book explores religious change in Europe through a comparative approach that analyzes Atheist, Catholic, and Muslim blogs as spaces for articulating narratives about religion that symbolically challenge the power of religious institutions. The book adds theoretical complexity to the study of religion and digital media with the concept of hypermediated religious spaces. The theory of hypermediation helps to critically discuss the theory of secularization and to contextualize religious change as the result of multiple entangled phenomena. It considers religion as being connected with secular and post-secular spaces, and media as embedding material forms, institutions, and technologies. A spatial perspective contextualizes hypermediated religious spaces as existing at the interstice of alternative and mainstream, private and public, imaginary and real venues. By offering the innovative perspective of hypermediated religious spaces, this book will be of significant interest to scholars of religious studies, the sociology of religion, and digital media. With code HUM19 you can get a 20% discount Best Regards, Giulia Evolvi, Dr Research Associate Ruhr University Bochum giulia.evolvi(a)rub.de @giuliaevolvi www.giuliaevolvi.com
