CfA: Panel Session "The politics of algorithmic governance. Data subjects and social ordering in the digital age" (18th Annual STS Conference in Graz, 6-7 May 2019)
by Florian Irgmaier 10 Dec '18

10 Dec '18

Dear Colleagues, we would like to call your attention to a panel session about the politics of algorithmic governance at next year's Annual STS Conference in Graz. The conference takes place on the 6th and the 7th of May 2019. The deadline for the abstracts is 21.01.2019. A key aspect of the ongoing digital transformation of society is the increasing datafication and quantification of almost all aspects of life. This realm of “data doubles” gives rise to new modes of producing and validating knowledge and of establishing epistemic and thus political authority, enabled by artificially intelligent computer systems and machines learning from big datasets. As a consequence, we are witnessing the emergence of new forms of social coordination, steering and control that are unfolding on the individual level (as in the quantified self movement), on the organizational level (as in people analytics) as well as on the societal level (as in predictive policing and citizen scores). While technology enthusiasts interpret these trends as an opportunity for more reactive, more integrated and less bureaucratic forms of regulation that will ultimately benefit everyone (O’Reilly 2013), critics warn that humans are reduced to passive data providers in a new, depoliticized “surveillance capitalism” (Morozov 2014, Zuboff 2018). As the fusion of digital technology and institutions of public and private governance proceeds, gaining a deeper understanding of these ambivalences is one of the pressing academic and practical issues of our time (Yeung 2017). During this session we want to continue the conversation about the possible contributions of Science, Technology and Society Studies to this set of questions, debating both concrete empirical cases and broader theoretical considerations. We invite innovative papers from all relevant areas that address issues including, but not limited to, the following: Which new forms of algorithmic governance do we observe? How do they relate to and interact with existing forms of social ordering and what sets them apart? Do we witness the emergence of new forms of subjectivities and identities? In what ways do algorithmic systems foster or inhibit individuals’ conduct of everyday life, and how are they integrated into daily routines? Do we witness the rise of new types of socio-technical networks and assemblages? When do the new infrastructures of algorithmic governance fail and which vulnerabilities are responsible for the failures? In what ways do individuals and groups apply, cope with, adapt to, subvert or re-purpose systems of algorithmic governance? How can we think about these changes in ways that take seriously both the material specificity and the social logics of these new technologies? What are the socio-technical imaginaries that give rise to the various forms of algorithmic governance? What is the relationship between data, algorithms and agency, and what do these forms of algorithmic governance imply for individual and collective self-determination? What are the conditions for the legitimacy of algorithmic governance in the 21st century? How can algorithmic governance itself be governed? Important information Deadline 21.01.2019 16:00 Confirmation of abstracts: February 2019 Information und submission: https://sts-conference.isds.tugraz.at/event/5/abstracts/ We are looking forward to your abstracts! New Book / The Digital Party: Political Organisation and Online Democracy
by Gerbaudo, Paolo 10 Dec '18

10 Dec '18

Dear Colleagues, I am delighted to announce that my new book "The Digital Party: Political Organisation and Online Democracy" has just been published! https://www.plutobooks.com/9780745335797/the-digital-party/ <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.plut…> The book looks at the transformation of political parties in the digital era focusing on the cases of Podemos, the Five Star Movement, Pirate Parties, France Insoumise and Momentum. It is based on 4 years of research and 30 interviews with politicians, organisers and developers of participatory platforms and observations of rallies, campaigns, party offices and events. Below you find some info about the book and the first book endorsements. If you want to have a review copy please don't hesitate to write me. I hope you enjoy the book! Best, Paolo The Digital Party: Political Organisation and Online Democracy Paolo Gerbaudo / Pluto Press >From the Five Star Movement to Podemos, from the Pirate Parties to La France Insoumise, from the movements behind Bernie Sanders to those backing Jeremy Corbyn, the last decade has witnessed the rise of a new blueprint for political organisation: the digital party. Paolo Gerbaudo addresses the organisational revolution that is transforming political parties in the time of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Cambridge Analytica. Drawing on interviews with political leaders and organisers, Gerbaudo demonstrates that besides rapidly growing in votes, these formations have also revitalised party democracy, involving hundreds of thousands in discussions carried out on online decision-making platforms. Participatory, yet plebiscitarian, open and democratic, yet dominated by charismatic 'hyperleaders', digital parties display both great potentials and risks for the development of new forms of mass participation in an era of growing inequality. All political parties will have to reckon with the lessons of the digital party. Endorsements 'In this refreshing, imaginative and conceptually sophisticated book, Paolo Gerbaudo takes us on a compelling journey across Europe to understand the digitally native political parties at the forefront of a profound process of organizational evolution. Gerbaudo convincingly explains the positive and negative implications of this process, and why it matters for the future of democracy' - Andrew Chadwick, author of 'The Hybrid Media System: Politics and Power' 'In a historic moment when political parties are losing their capacity to represent citizens, new party models have grown and often achieved unexpected success. This book is an important contribution to the conceptualization of digital parties and the understanding of their evolution' - Donatella Della Porta, Dean of the Institute for Humanities and the Social Sciences, Scuola Normale Superiore and author of 'Movement Parties in Times of Austerity' 'With a rare mix of narrative flair and analytical insight, Gerbaudo tells the riveting story of how tech-savvy leaders and 'connected outsiders' have reshaped politics in the digital era' - John Postill, author of 'The Rise of Nerd Politics' 'Paolo Gerbaudo shows how the internet shapes contemporary politics and vice versa. A must read for everyone interested in digital politics' - Christian Fuchs, author of 'Digital Demagogues: Authoritarian Capitalism in the Age of Trump and Twitter' 'Gerbaudo shows how technology-based "platform parties" are designed, how they fit into the history of political parties, and how they reflect changes in politics, society, economics, and communication. This rich analysis looks at both the promise and the limitations of these fascinating political experiments' - Lance Bennett, University of Washington 'This book by Paolo Gerbaudo goes deep into the "morbid" crossroads of our present and offers us suggestive ideas on the key elements of its emerging political practice. A brilliant work' - German Cano, University of Alcala de Henares, member of the founding group of Podemos Dr Paolo Gerbaudo, Senior Lecturer in Digital Culture and Society, Department of Digital Humanities Director of the Centre for Digital Culture King's College London, Room S3.10, Strand Building, 3rd Floor, Strand London WC2, England Phone: +44 (0)20 78481576

CFA Edited Volume Visual Pedagogies: Concepts Cases Models
by MC Cambre 09 Dec '18

09 Dec '18

Call for Abstracts Edited Volume: “Visual Pedagogies: Concepts, Cases & Models” Overview We invite abstracts for an edited collection investigating the theoretical, empirical and instructional aspects of what can be envisioned as visual pedagogies, offering classic, creative, and contemporary re-workings of these paradigms. The book will be divided into three complementary sections with an editor in charge of each. Submission guidelines: The book will be designed for an academic audience, however, we also invite creative and novel approaches that challenge and take risks including troubling traditionally accepted concepts such as literacy, learning, teaching, skills and so on. Contributors are asked to write in a manner accessible to readers outside of their respective fields. We encourage the use of images, mixed media, and externally linked or referenced material. Thus, we encourage provocations and novel ways of integrating image, diagram, illustration and other modalities, within and through the book’s pages. To build this book collaboratively and speak across chapters, we will share material, peer edit and discuss contributions within respective sections. In addition, each chapter will undergo rigorous double blind peer-review. Key dates: - Abstracts of 500 words (theoretical framework, methods and focus) plus a 100 word biographical statement: February 25, 2019 - Invitations for full chapters sent to authors: March 26, 2019 - Full chapters (6000-7000 words including references) submission: September 10, 2019 Please email submissions and queries to the relevant section editor (see emails in the beginning of each section description). Section 1: Conceptualizing Visual Pedagogies Section editor: Carolina Cambre, Concordia University, Canada. E-mail: carolina.cambre(a)concordia.ca This section explores visual pedagogies theoretically through a collection of papers that reach into and beyond traditional understandings of both terms “visual” and “pedagogy.” In his 1648 landmark book on didactics, John Amos Comenius set out some enduring fundamental principles for teaching and learning, including what might seem an almost too obvious observation that “all learning happens through the senses” and thus this book refuses to relegate its consideration of the visual in pedagogy to the purely eye-dependent. In other words, we avoid visual essentialism by understanding that the visual is already irretrievably embedded in other sensory awareness. Similarly, we consider pedagogy by pluralizing it and positioning it beyond what might be seen as institutional pedagogical understandings and approaches by looking to de-link it from strict notions of being situated in schooling and within certain age-ranges. Instead, these conceptually oriented papers consider pedagogies in the sense that these approaches can take multiple, non-linear, and situated approaches whether collective or individual that can encompass diverse spaces. Thus the official space of the classroom is one amongst many pedagogical spaces that can include ceremonial, artistic, public, mediated, athletic, informal, community-based and work-related arenas. Chapters in this section will re-think what visual pedagogies involve: including foregrounding the social nature of pedagogy and asking: What does it mean to look together, and deliberately attend to something in a process of desire and possibility? Visual pedagogies are by nature nomadic and do not separate the how of educating from the what. What does this mean? First it means recognizing that “Pedagogy is never innocent,” and that it “carries its own message” (Bruner 1996: 63). Visual pedagogies respond and are actualized within the cultural contexts in which they are working, yet they are not “wed to a context but are taken up in unpredictable ways across various contexts” (Masny & Waterhouse 2011: 291 emphasis in original). As visual pedagogies gain momentum across fields, the need to navigate visual environments both digital and offline in ways that enhance sensibility and awareness of how/what to observe, analyze, criticize and reflect on in any given moment continues to grow. Section 2: Case Studies of Visual Pedagogies in Education Section editor: Edna Barromi-Perlman, University of Haifa, Kibbutz College of Education, Israel. E-mail: edna.barromi(a)smkb.ac.il Reading and interpreting the visual worlds in which we live, work, teach and educate has emerged as an important feature in educational environments. Educational practice is influenced and maneuvered by continual flows of visual imagery, which manifest across multitudes of platforms and modalities. This section of the book will collect case studies based on empirical fieldwork, that reflect on forms of developing knowledge in visual pedagogy and how this knowledge might affect academic or other educational practices, societies, communities and educational systems. This section thus invites case studies of research/action research conducted in this field. The case studies will explore different paradigms and discuss the empirical manifestation of visual pedagogies in the field. The case studies will build on current theories and address diverse audiences as well as diverse learning institutions on a global level. The selection will aim for an international and cross-cultural scope, so that each case study will present challenges specific to its country of origin. The research will encompass fieldwork in formal and informal educational settings as well as digital practices, educational media, online material and printed material and will be open to work that explores various, alternative visual platforms in educational institutions and beyond. Section 3: Visual Pedagogies in Practice Section editor: Joanna Kedra, University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. E-mail: joanna.kedra(a)jyu.fi This section explores visual pedagogies in classroom related contexts by immersing readers straight into the concrete examples of educational practices. In a world saturated by images and digitally and visually mediated communication, visual competency has come to the forefront in the 21st century. Subsequently, the need for skills in visual interpretation, image creation, evaluation and usage has demanded increased attention in education. Today’s students are assumed to be fluent in digital and visual technologies, mainly, due to their perpetual immersion into visually and technologically mediated communication. However, recent studies that examine visual literacy of young adults, mainly visual interpretation, but also abilities in visual production and image use, indicate that the assumption of today’s learners being technologically and visually savvy is mistaken. Thus, there is a pressing need for relevant visual pedagogies. However, practical teaching tools that may assist in developing students’ visual competency are still lacking, along with in-depth reflection on visual teaching practices. At the core of this section lies a desire to introduce and critically evaluate models for teaching-learning interactions with various types of visuals. Visual pedagogies are understood as educating ‘with’ or ‘about’ visuals as well as a group of practices toward development of learners’ visual literacy. Contributors of this section examine visually oriented practices, modes and models and reflect upon them. This section will provide fresh scholarly perspectives within an area of pedagogy that calls for more substantive reflection and practice-based approaches. <http://www.bloomsbury.com/us/the-semiotics-of-che-guevara-9781472505293/>

Last CFP: ACM IUI Workshop on Exploratory Search and Interactive Data Analytics (ESIDA)
by Axel Soto 09 Dec '18

09 Dec '18

Workshop on Exploratory Search and Interactive Data Analytics (ESIDA) Los Angeles, USA, March 20, 2019 Hosted by ACM IUI 2019, March 17-20, 201 https://sites.google.com/view/esida2019 Important dates Submission deadline: December 17, 2018 (midnight Hawaii time) Acceptance notification: January 23, 2019 Final manuscript due: February 6, 2019 Workshop Topic and Description In recent years, retrieval techniques operating on text or semantic annotations, have become the industry standard for retrieval from large data collections, such as documents, images, videos, music, medical data. This approach works well with sufficient high-quality meta-data or tagging. However, with the explosive growth of big data collections, it has become apparent that tagging new data quickly and efficiently is not always possible. Secondly, even if instantaneous high-quality data tagging were possible, there would still be many instances, where search by keyword query is problematic. For example, in the case of image retrieval it might be easier for a user to define their query if they are looking for an image of a cat, but how would they specify that the cat should be of a particular shade of ginger with sad looking eyes? A solution to these problems is active engagement of the user in the information retrieval loop, thus enabling the user to not only explore a given dataset more easily but also gradually direct their search to a more specific area of the search space. The aim of this workshop is to explore new methods and interface/system design for interactive data analytics and management in various domains, including specialised text collections (e.g. legal, medical, scientific), multimedia, and bioinformatics, as well as for various tasks, such as semantic information retrieval, conceptual organization and clustering of data collections for sense-making, semantic expert profiling, and document/multimedia recommender systems. The primary audience of the workshop is researchers and practitioners in the area of interactive and personalized system design as well as interactive machine learning both from academia and industry. IUI, with its focus on the intersection of HCI and AI, is a perfect venue where researchers from system/interface design community and the machine learning community can meet. Workshop Target Areas The workshop aims to solicit submissions in all areas of interactive data analytics and exploratory search including: - design, testing and assessment of interactive systems for data analytics - interactive data visualization for exploratory and investigative analysis - interactive classification and clustering of data - user-assisted curation and validation of the analysis process, and generation of data visualizations - user engagement in the semantic analysis process via suitable annotation and correction tools - study of the trade-off between accuracy of the results and user effort - personalization and user modeling related to interactive system design Submissions aimed at solving practical problems in specific application domains are especially welcome, including: - digital libraries - legal document management - personalized online learning systems - news media - biomedical data - multimedia collections - specialized image and video collections, e.g. medical images. We encourage submissions of work in progress, concept papers, case studies, and generally material that will stimulate discussion, generate useful feedback to the authors, encourage research collaborations and vigorous exchange of ideas on promising research directions, in one of the following formats: - full papers (up to 8 pages in the ACM SIGCHI format), which will be presented either as contributed talks or posters - extended abstracts (up to 4 pages in the ACM SIGCHI format), which will be presented as posters with a possibility to be accompanied by a demo. Submission information Submissions to the workshop will be through EasyChair, <https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=esida2019> https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=esida19 Workshop date March 20, 2019 Workshop location Marriott Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles, CA, USA - https://iui.acm.org/2019/venue_transportation.html Keynote Speaker John O'Donovan: University of California, Santa Barbara, USA Organizers Dorota Glowacka, School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, dorota.glowacka at ed.ac.uk Evangelos Milios, Faculty of Computer Science, Dalhousie University, eem at cs.dal.ca Axel J. ** Please forward to anyone who might be interested ** -------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS 10th International Workshop on Modeling Social Media (MSM'2019) Mining, Modeling and Learning from Social Media to be held on May 14-17, 2019, San Francisco, USA co-located with TheWebConf 2019 https://msmworkshop.github.io/ -------------------------------------------------------------- Important Dates: ================ ** Submission Deadline: Jan 10, 2019 ** Notification of Acceptance: Feb 14, 2019 ** Camera-Ready Versions Due: Mar 3, 2019 ** Workshop date: May 13-14, 2019 Workshop Organizers: ==================== Martin Atzmueller, Tilburg University, Netherlands; m.atzmueller(a)uvt.nl Alvin Chin, BMW Technology Corporation, USA; alvin.chin(a)bmwna.com Christoph Trattner, University of Bergen, Norway; trattner.christoph(a)gmail.com We aim to attract researchers from all over the world working on data mining, modeling and using machine learning and AI for social media, big and small data, sensor data and the web. Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn have paved the way for generating huge amount of diverse, streaming bit data in a short period of time. Such social media data require the application of big data analytics to produce meaningful information to both information consumers and data generators. Machine learning and AI techniques are particularly effective in situations where deep and predictive insights need to be uncovered from such social media data sets that are large, diverse and fast changing. Following the discussion at our workshop at TheWebConf 2018, we aim to focus on how to apply data mining, recommendation, machine learning and AI models, algorithms and systems for analytic and predictive modeling on social media, big data, small data, web and sensor data. Contrary to last year’s workshop, we would like to particularly invite researchers that are interested in going beyond standard analytics approaches and try to discover the intelligent information hidden in the large and fast-changing social media data. Overall, we are interested in receiving papers related to the following topics which include but are not limited to: * predictive analytics methods or frameworks for social media, big data, small data, sensor data and the web * AI, machine learning, deep learning and NLP models, algorithms and systems for social media, big data, small data, sensor data and the web * deep learning approaches and models for social media, big data, small data, sensor data and data from/on the web * data mining techniques and algorithms for social media, big data, small data, sensor data and data from/on the web * methods for learning social activities and behavioral analytic metrics * evaluation of machine learning and AI frameworks and metrics * explainability and transparency of the machine learning/deep learning/AI methods * applications of machine learning, deep learning and AI * applications of any of the above methods and technologies The goal of this workshop is to use data mining, machine learning and AI approaches and algorithms on social media, big data, small data, sensor data and data from/on the web. Submissions: We solicit full research papers (4-8 pages), and short papers (1-4 pages) both in the ACM conference paper style. Papers should be submitted in EasyChair tohttps://easychair.org/my/conference.cgi?conf=msm2019 Proceedings: ============ Contributions will be included in the Companion volume of TheWebConf 2019 conference, which will be published by ACM and included in the ACM Digital Library. However, to make that happen at least one author of the accepted paper has to register. At the time of submission of the final camera-ready copy, authors will have to indicate the already registered person for that publication. Any paper published by the ACM, IEEE, etc. which can be properly cited constitutes research which must be considered in judging the novelty of a TheWebConf submission, whether the published paper was in a conference, journal, or workshop. Therefore, any paper previously published as part of a WWW or TheWebConf workshop must be referenced and suitably extended with new content to qualify as a new submission to the Research Track at TheWebConf conference. Submission guidelines: ====================== All submitted papers must * be written in English; * contain author names, affiliations, and email addresses; * be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings template (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) with a font size no smaller than 9pt; * be in PDF (make sure that the PDF can be viewed on any platform), and formatted for US Letter size; * occupy no more than six pages, including the abstract, references, and appendices. It is the authors’ responsibility to ensure that their submissions adhere strictly to the required format. Submissions that do not comply with the above guidelines may be rejected without review. All submissions must be entered into the reviewing system:https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=msm2019 Contact: ======== Martin Atzmueller, Tilburg University, Netherlands; m.atzmueller(a)uvt.nl Alvin Chin, BMW Technology Corporation, USA; alvin.chin(a)bmwna.com Christoph Trattner, University of Bergen, Norway; trattner.christoph(a)gmail.com Follow us on: ============= Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/527164050627185/ Twitter https://twitter.com/msm_workshop -- ------------------------------------------------------- Dipl.-Ing.
