We hope to make this network an open, lively and welcoming place for all researchers interested in the socio-economic facets of the digital economy. It is possible to submit in two different categories: Individual Papers and Sessions. Abstracts for submissions to regular networks should be no longer than 500 words. To submit a session, you must include both an overall abstract for the session and abstracts for each of the 3-5 papers composing the session. Important dates: - The deadline for submitting proposals is 14 January 2019. - Acceptance notifications will be sent by mid-February 2019. - Full papers are expected by 6 May 2019 Best wishes, SASE “Digital Economy” Network organizers ---------------------------------------- J: Digital Economy Digital technologies are contributing to radical, growing and unpredictable transformations of economic life, raising a broad range of new issues for scholars of the economy. This research network is dedicated to the study of these issues. We are particularly interested in the impact of these developments on market processes and actors, on goods themselves, on non-market forms of economy, and on wider social outcomes. In the area of market processes we encourage discussion, for example, of intermediaries and business models such as the platform economy, coordination instruments such as participatory evaluation systems, digital reputations, the massive collection of consumer data, virtual and alternative currencies, bots, algorithms, new kinds of digital objects and forms of qualification and calculation. Digital technology can also provide a platform for non-market forms of economy, and we welcome contributions on digital forms of gift and participative economy as well as the use of digital platforms for governmental initiatives and services. Ultimately we are interested in the impact of such developments on wider social outcomes, including inequality, inclusion and exclusion on the basis of gender, class, race, ethnicity and geopolitical region, governance capacities, systemic risk, environmental change, and political engagement with economic issues. 10-11th of December in Oslo- Conference "DATA, SECURITY, VALUES"
by Mareile Kaufmann 03 Dec '18

03 Dec '18

Dear all, please be invited to the conference "DATA, SECURITY, VALUES: Vocations and Visions of Data Analysis" 10 - 11 December 2018, Peace Research Institute Oslo, Hausmanns gate 3 https://www.prio.org/Events/Event/?x=8674 Data analysis can have many vocations and visions. Coding, programming and algorithmically interpreting data is informed by the concepts, ideas, values and affordances of the technologies and people that engage with data. Even if the word data means "given", information becomes socially and politically imbued as soon as it is selected and categorized to make it available for analysis. Such insights are no longer only subject of academic critique, but the normativity of data analysis has by now become integrated into public discourses. In fact, the value of data has created a new market for moral entrepreneurs, who re-frame data analysis as a tool for moral engineering and security politics. At this conference we explore how values, ideas and concepts are not only necessarily embedded in data analysis, but also in what way they are productive and co-create society. We discuss the relationship between data analysis, ideas and values by looking at the workings of digital security techno logies, data security policies or the security politics of data. Roundtable Discussion: Dilemma Dialogue on the Everyday Use of Data in Security Authorities with representatives from The Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB), Ministry of Justice, The Norwegian National Security Authority (NSM) and the Police Security Services (PST) Key Notes Miguel Sicart, Associate Professor, IT University Copenhagen Playing Data: Understanding the Ludic in the Information Age Katja de Vries, Postdoctoral Researcher, IT University Copenhagen The Coexistence of Humans and Algorithmic Machines Susanne Krasmann, Professor, Hamburg University The Secret of Algorithms: On Transparency, Truth and the Political Breakfast and Lunch will be served. Please register your attendance at: https://www.prio.org/Events/Event/?x=8674

Call for Proposals: Interfacing public communications in the digital economy
by Michael Klontzas 02 Dec '18

02 Dec '18

Call for Papers Journal of Digital Media and Policy (JDMP) (Formerly International Journal of Digital Television) Special Issue 10.3 (Autumn 2019) ‘Interfacing public communications in the digital economy’ Guest edited by Michael Klontzas (University of Huddersfield) and Maria Sourbati (University of Brighton) Deadline for proposals: 30 November 2018 https://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/journals/view-journal,id=175/view,page=2/ Public organizations tasked with the delivery of universal service in communications (e.g. broadcasting) and social welfare (e.g. health services) have been redesigning their service delivery through digital transformation for almost two decades now. At the centre of these systems and infrastructures are digital interfaces enabling the flow of information and data between organizations and their publics, mediating access to services and generating data about service users. Originating in engineering to describe a face of separation between substances (Bottomley 1882) and, later, places or surfaces where two bodies or systems come together (OED 1990; McLuhan 1962), the concept of the ‘interface’ entered common use in new media studies at the turn of the century to denote mediations between human and computer, between computers or between humans. Interfaces are both technical devices and conceptual spaces. In digital communications, the word ‘interface’ denotes the software and hardware that conditions the interaction between computers and between computers and humans, as well as the interweaving of information and forging of connections that is directed through digital code. Interfaces have the power to shape communication and information access (Gane and Beer 2008) structure the choice of users and make normative claims about the purposes and appropriate use of content (Andersen and Pold 2014; Stanfill 2015). Service providers and content producers inscribe specific roles and types of agency into software interfaces (Lammes 2016) highlighting the affordances of websites (Graham and Henman 2018) and other human-facing technologies. Public service webpages, dashboards and social media feeds, demarcating appropriate modes of engagement, privilege certain content options, presuppose user competencies and deploy user characteristics shaping the production of user data that can be co-opted by powerful interests. Such power asymmetries have been the subject of ongoing policy debates about the crisis in public information (‘fake news’) and the necessity for regulatory intervention enforcing platform responsibility and supporting media literacy. Communications policy research has addressed today’s evolving digital media systems as platforms (e.g. Mansell 2015; van Dijck, Poell and Waal 2018) and as software and content (Burri 2015; Helberger, Karppinen and D'Acunto 2016), but less so as interactions and interrelationships of platform design, service software, content and structured media and information access. For this special issue, we invite contributions that examine interfaces on the institutional, organizational strategy, technology design and access level with a focus on universal/inclusive public communications and services. We invite contributions that include, but are not limited to, the following themes: * Digital interfaces and the structuring of user choice. * Public service ideals and evolving user interfaces: institutional strategies and alternative innovation. * Social inclusion by design. * Interfaces, aesthetics and configuring the public service user. * Digital interface affordances and public value. * Emerging interface technologies. * Digital interface design knowledge exchange and policy diffusion. * Interface regulation. Abstracts of 500 words should be submitted to the guest editors, Michael Klontzas M.Klontzas(a)hud.ac.uk<mailto:M.Klontzas@hud.ac.uk> and Maria Sourbati M.Sourbati(a)brighton.ac.uk<mailto:M.Sourbati@brighton.ac.uk>, by 30 November 2018. All proposals must include a title, six-eight keywords, author name(s), institutional affiliation(s) and contact details. To read more information about the journal and find Notes for Contributors, visit http://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/journals/view-Journal,id=175 Key dates 30 November 2018: Deadline for abstract submission. 15 December 2018: Notification of accepted proposals. 29 April 2019: Deadline for submission of full articles. 27 May 2019: Double-blind peer-review completed. Dear all, I am working on a presentation that includes a discussion of the effects of computational statistics. SPSS was an early element in this space. I am wondering if anyone has a copy of the original SPSS manual in their bookshelf and if they would be willing to send me a photo of it. Thanks in advance. -- Rich L.
