I don’t know if “research design” and “design research” are the same thing but you might check out two courses from here: https://dm.lmc.gatech.edu/program/syllabi/ 1) Discovery and Invention in Digital Media The course is taught by someone else every few years so it’s worth looking all the way back. 2) Research Methods for Digital Media Then, there are good ones scattered throughout as well. Journal of Business Research--Special Issue on Mobile Applications
by John Dinsmore 05 Dec '18

05 Dec '18

*Call for Papers — Journal of Business Research — Special Issue on Mobile Applications* Special issue editors John Dinsmore, Kunal Swani, Kendall Goodrich, Umut Konus Software applications on mobile devices—or “mobile apps”—are a significant and growing force in each element of the marketing mix. Consider that in the United States: - 77% of all adults own a smartphone (Pew, 2018) - Time-spent in mobile apps grew 69% from 2016 to 2017 - Adults now spend more than five hours per day on their mobile devices (Flurry, 2017) - 87% of mobile time spent is in applications. (App Annie, 2016) Worldwide, mobile applications are projected to have 284 billion downloads and $100 billion in revenues in 2020 (App Annie, 2016). Despite the ubiquity of mobile devices and applications, and despite the tremendous impact of mobile apps on the economy, very little is understood about this unique consumption context. Empirical data and academic research both support the notion that consumer choice and behavior is different in mobile applications versus other consumption contexts. Evidence shows that a number of factors affect consumer behavior “in-app,” including device type, application category, screen size, personality traits (Dinsmore, Dugan & Swani, 2017; Dinsmore, Swani, & Wamwara, 2018), design elements, pricing scheme (Arora, Hofstede, & Mahajan, 2017; Dinsmore, Dugan, & Wright, 2016) and more. Due to the need for greater understanding of this important context, we invite submissions featuring both quantitative and qualitative studies relating to mobile applications, including (but not limited to): - App promotion and adoption - App Store Optimization (ASO) - Cross-platform (in-app vs browser) and cross-device (phone vs tablet vs wearable vs IoT, etc.) behavior in applications - Customer service via mobile application - Design, device, and interface elements and their effect on user behavior - Freemium models - In-app advertising - In-app purchases - Promotions via mobile application - Use of geolocation in marketing Timeline: Submissions will be accepted beginning November 1, 2019 with final submissions accepted December 15th. Publication of the issue is anticipated in 2020. The Call for Papers can also be found at *JBR*’s website at *https://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-business-research/call-for-papers/mobile-applications-special-issue* <https://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-business-research/call-for-pap…>

Seen by Machine: Machine learning in the BBC Archive, Thu 6th Dec, 6-8pm
by Gray, Jonathan 04 Dec '18

04 Dec '18

For those of you in/around London, we will be hosting a talk with Daniel Chavez at KCL on Thursday evening on a recent experiment to curate clips from BBC archives using machine learning algorithms. The seminar series is public so, as always, please do feel free to forward to colleagues, students, friends and anyone else who might be interested! ** ## Seen by Machine: Machine learning in the BBC Archive ## Register: http://seen-by-machine.eventbrite.co.uk ## When? Thu 6 December 2018, 18:00 – 20:00 GMT ## Where? King's College London, Bush House Lecture Theatre 2 BH(S)4.04, Level 4, South, King's College London, 30 Aldwych, London, WC2B 4BG Can we programme machines to find value in moving imagery? Discussing an experiment with the BBC's archive, Daniel Chávez Heras (King’s College London) will show and introduce elements from the video project Made by Machine: When AI met the Archive. Together with a team of researchers at BBC R&D, they created a television programme from archive footage using different machine learning techniques. Daniel will show a selection of clips from the programme and will critically examine the methods used to produce them. Through these examples, he will introduce the idea of computational spectatorship as a way to understand how our visual regimes are increasingly mediated by machine-seers. Can audiovisual archives be considered “cultural big data” and are moving images like any other type of data? ** Bio: Daniel has been working with pictures and computers, in various capacities, for over ten years. He trained as a designer, back in his native Mexico, and has worked professionally in print media, television, and digital. In 2010 he was awarded a Jumex fellowship for the study of contemporary art, and he holds an MA in Film Studies from King’s College London, where he is now trying to train computers to watch films for his PhD at the department of digital humanities. Daniel’s research is funded by Mexico’s Ministry of Education through its Science and Technology Research Council (CONACYT). ** This event is part of a public seminar series on *critical inquiry with and about the digital*, organised by the Department of Digital Humanities, King's College London. resources for researches from underdeveloped countries
by Hamlet López 04 Dec '18

04 Dec '18

Dear all, I would like to compile and share with my colleagues and students a list of resources for social researchers from underdeveloped countries focused in internet research. That would be mainly for Latinoamericans and Caribbeans, but also can be of interest for academicians from Asia or Africa. Examples of resources: international research networks, international research projects, funding opportunities for research and academic travels... Any suggestions? Suggestions to widely publish such list will be welcome as well! Thanks in advance.
