[Apologies for multiple copies] ----------------- SMARTCOMP is the premier conference on smart computing. Smart computing is based on the synergistic combination of advances in Sensor-based technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems, Edge computing, Big Data analytics, Machine Learning, Cognitive Computing, and Artificial Intelligence. Smart computing is a multidisciplinary domain. Applications of smart computing can be found in different societal domains including, but not limited to, transportation, energy, environmental protection, smart and connected communities, healthcare, banking, entertainment, and social media. Algorithmic and system advancements of cloud computing, mobile/pervasive computing, cyber-physical systems, sensor networking and social computing are taking smart computing to a new dimension and improving our ways of living. SMARTCOMP 2019 is the 5th edition of the conference and will held in Washington, USA and will include smart computing innovations pertaining to pervasive/ubiquitous computing, cloud computing, sensor networks, internet of things, big data analytics, security and privacy, social computing, cognitive computing, cyber-physical systems and their application and validation within smart computing environments. This includes applications such as smart buildings, smart cities, smart grids, precision agriculture and other innovations contributing to smart living. Submission Guidelines Paper submissions must be no longer than 8 pages and formatted according to the two-column IEEE proceedings template. IEEE provides corresponding formatting templates at IEEE conference template. Make sure to use the conference mode of the template, i.e., LaTeX users must use the conference option of the IEEEtran document class. Papers must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file on US Letter size paper (not A4), with all fonts embedded (the PDF-A standard complies with that). Prior to submission, ensure that any running headers/footers, page numbering, as well as blue underlining for URLs and email addresses has been removed. All submitted papers will be subject to peer reviews by Technical Program Committee members and other experts in the field. All presented papers will be published in the conference proceedings and submitted to the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. Topics ------ SMARTCOMP 2019 solicits submissions that address the fundamental questions of smart computing, namely how to design and build smart computing systems and how to use computing technology for resource sustainability to improve the human experience. This year, special focus will be on the challenging issues related to all the opportunities of computing, sensing and communication in the era of the integration of Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, and Big Data. The Workshops Committee of SMARTCOMP 2019 invites proposals for half or full day workshops affiliated with the conference, on topics of interest to SMARTCOMP 2019 attendees. The purpose of these workshops is to create new opportunities for presenting novel ideas in a less formal and possibly more sharply focused way than at the conference itself. Hi All, Does anyone know whether there's a collection of all syllabi and readings on technology and social good (or public good or social change)? If such a collection doesn't exist, could you help me create one? The readings can be from any discipline, seminal or not, and academic or not. Not the day of, but Kate Starbird et al. has Tweets from 5/9/1- 8/4/10. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/10807039.2014.947866?needAccess… My approach would be to look for papers such as this one to see who might have them. The Internet Archive has lots of “major media events” and I think they’re on Harvard’s Dataverse now (?). I’m not sure how far back it goes though, and the files are in these ridiculously nested folders. As an aside: The Twitter TOS states that Twitter data cannot be shared in it’s entirety. In this enterprise, mutually supportive and critical versions of the posthuman are put forth by steams of thought not necessarily compatible with each other such as science fiction, futurology, transhumanism, cyborgism, feminist posthumanism, commercial/corporate posthumanism, critical posthumanism, among others. The engagement of applied language studies with posthumanism is relatively recent, and contemplation of such diversity of discourses, practices, and positions are just beginning. However, it is already clear that historical commitments to humanism and to the conceptions of language, agency, learning, subjectivity and interaction therefrom should be in question. In addition, the posthumanistic perspective reinforces the inter and transdisciplinary identity claimed by the field. Hence the relevance of a dossier that gathers interdisciplinary perspectives of the posthumanist issue, having meaning making as a point of convergence, or of interface, the meaning. CALL FOR PAPERS: The Democratization of Artificial Intelligence. Net Politics in the Era of Learning Algorithms

CALL FOR PAPERS International Book Publication on the Politics of AI Our Internet-based digital culture is increasingly being determined by diverse forms of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Above all, the machine learning methods (ML) of so-called Deep Learning (DL) are significantly involved in the current transformation of information technologies. The latest successful implementations of DL have lead to noteworthy advances in AI, but DL itself is not new at all. It has been known for decades under the connectionist paradigm of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). While for decades ANN were considered a dead end in AI research, recent advances in computational capacities coupled with new implementations have consistently led to breakthroughs in a number of applications. For example, in 2012 Krizhevsky, Sutskever and Hinton were able to use ANN/DL methods to reliable train computers to semi-autonomously recognize and classify large numbers of images. This breakthrough serves as the bedrock for much work on machine vision and only became possible with cheap, fast, and powerful GPUs. These new applications of ANN/DL methods have vast technical, ethical, economic, social, and political implications that are increasingly being negotiated in public discourse. They are now deployed for identifying potential terrorists through vast surveillance networks, for producing sentencing guidelines and recidivism risk profiles in criminal justice systems, for demographic and psychographic targeting of bodies for advertising, propaganda, or other forms of state intervention, and more generally for automating the processing of natural language, written and spoken, photographs and images, and motion pictures. All of these applications have been debated in public discourse, most notably in the recent Congressional hearings in the United States with Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. As the latter example clearly shows, AI technologies are also crucial to understanding the medial and political developments and transformations of the Internet. Conversely, technologies with regard, for instance, to the access to large (correctly) labeled data sets are heavily dependent on Internet platforms, applications, and technologies (e.g. program libraries such as TensorFlow or crowd-sourcing platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk). The aim of the book is to discuss the diverse political dimensions of Internet and AI technologies. Two perspectives, which are closely related to each other, are at the center: On the one hand, there is the question of how AI approaches, not least with regard to their connections to the Internet, can be characterized as black box technologies. Here we are interested in the entanglement of ANN/DL algorithms with the source of their datasets, most often large international digital platforms like Facebook, Google, Alibaba, Amazon, Weibo, etc. These data sets are often comprised through illicit or invisible opt-in user agreements that gather vast amounts of our personal data to feed proprietary ANN/DL algorithms. Here the collection, transmission, storage, and processing of data – including ANN/DL algorithms – are obscured from users both de facto by their complexity and de jure by corporate secrecy practices. On the other hand, there is the question of whether potential open-source, government-sponsored, non-profit and/or industrial-scientific collaborative research projects – an important example being OpenAI – can achieve their common missions like democratizing AI. The project therefore not only wants to critically examine the claims of such companies and projects with regard to their concrete manifestations. Rather, it is about illuminating the media configurations and constellations of the production of these technologies in an interdisciplinary manner as well as placing them in a theoretically and historically appropriate way, especially with regard to their political implications, functions, and effects. Among others, the following questions can be addressed: · What does it mean to critically investigate efforts of net politics in the age of learning algorithms? · How is it even possible to explore the political aspects of modern machine learning approaches if many experts in the field of Computer Science consider ANN/DL technologies as a black box, fundamentally opaque to human understanding? In what way does such an assumed opacity of ANN/DL approaches affect questions of accountability and political agency? · Are technological strategies of an Open or Explainable AI already able to reduce the opacity of AI methods? What political and/or critical concepts guide the technological process of making modern AI technology more accessible? · And how can we think about suitable ways of democratizing AI beyond abstract aspects of transparency or accountability? · Beyond these rather specific questions, however, contributions can also be submitted that deal in general with problems concerning the political dimension of artificial intelligence. The book is a follow-up to the conference of the same name, which took place in Bochum from September 6-7, 2018. Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada (TLA <http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_serial&pid=0103-1813&lng=en&nrm=…>), a peer-reviewed SciELO Brazil Collection journal sponsored by The University of Campinas, Brazil, invites authors from any field of knowledge, whose research has explicit or explicable interfaces with the problem of meaning-making, to submit articles to compose a dossier entitled "The posthuman is now: posthumanism, action and meaning-making ", to be published in September 2019. Submissions will be accepted in Portuguese, English or Spanish. The purpose of the dossier is to present TLA Journal's readership with different possibilities of outlining the posthuman condition as a research object, and with opportunities for dialogic contact with posthumanist discourses (scientific or not), as philosophical or methodological foundations for their (new) research. We are at a turning point in the human sciences and humanities in which not only the belief in the exceptionalism of the human species, but also the conceptual edifice of liberal humanism, show signs of exhaustion, even though, as in the case of the other "post- "(modern, social, colonial, etc.) perspectives, we do not know what is supposed to replace it, exactly. On the one hand, the Anthropocene, the new faces of high-tech biopolitics, the rise of "intelligent" machines and the role of informational patterns as powerful ontological and epistemological demarcators convene the human and social sciences to reinvent themselves in their methods and scope; on the other hand, currents traditionally critical of Enlightenment-rooted humanism such as feminist studies, postcolonial studies, studies of human ecology, and social studies of science and technology, strengthen posthumanism as an interdisciplinary endeavor. In this enterprise, mutually supportive and critical versions of the posthuman are put forth by steams of thought not necessarily compatible with each other such as science fiction, futurology, transhumanism, cyborgism, feminist posthumanism, commercial/corporate posthumanism, critical posthumanism, among others. The engagement of applied language studies with posthumanism is relatively recent, and contemplation of such diversity of discourses, practices, and positions are just beginning. However, it is already clear that historical commitments to humanism and to the conceptions of language, agency, learning, subjectivity and interaction therefrom should be in question. In addition, the posthumanistic perspective reinforces the inter and transdisciplinary identity claimed by the field. Hence the relevance of a dossier that gathers interdisciplinary perspectives of the posthumanist issue, having meaning making as a point of convergence, or of interface, the meaning.
