Book Announcement _ Personal Relationships and Intimacy in the Age of Social Media
by Miguel, Cristina 21 Nov '18

21 Nov '18

Hi all, I'm very pleased to announce that my first book "Personal relationships and intimacy in the age of social media" is out today!! https://www.palgrave.com/gp/book/9783030020613#aboutBook The back cover summary: The book examines how intimate relationships are built, negotiated and maintained through social media. The study takes a cross-platform approach, analysing three social media platforms of different genres - Badoo, CouchSurfing and Facebook - and exploring two interactive forces that shape the way people communicate through social media: the platforms architecture and policies, and actual practises of use. Combining analysis of the political economy of social media with users perspectives of their own practises - as well as exploring the tensions between the two - the book provides a detailed picture of intimacy as a complex structure of continuity and change. This is an important and timely book in which Cristina Miguel produces a sensitive and eloquent assessment of the leading debates surrounding changing intimacy practices online. Underpinned by original empirical material, Miguel produces a compelling analysis to explain the role played by social media platforms within intimate encounters and sustaining personal relationships in digital culture. Throwing new light on the intimate experience of social media users, Personal Relationships and Intimacy in the Age of Social Media makes a major contribution to the field of intimacy studies. -Deborah Chambers, Newcastle University, UK And a 20% discount code for the month of December: PM18TWENTY4? Topics on Internet Censorship and Surveillance: Call for Contributions
by Vasilis Ververis 21 Nov '18

21 Nov '18

*Topics on Internet Censorship and Surveillance (TICS): Call for Contributions* PDF version: https://www.iaria.org/conferences2019/filesICN19/TICS.pdf (Spanish version below) Over the past years there has been a greater demand for online censorship and surveillance, as an understandable reaction against hate speech, copyright violations, and other cases related to citizen compliance with civil laws and regulations by national authorities. Unfortunately, this is often accompanied by a tendency of extensively censoring online content and massively spying on citizens actions. Numerous whistleblower revelations, leaks from classified documents, and a vast amount of information released by activists, researchers and journalists, reveal evidence of government-sponsored infrastructure that either goes beyond the requirements and scope of the law, or operates without any effective regulations in place. In addition, this infrastructure often supports the interests of big private corporations, such as the companies that enforce online copyright control. TICS is a special track in the area of Internet censorship, surveillance and other adversarial burdens to technology that bring in danger; to a greater extend the safety (physical security and privacy) of its users. Proposals for TICS 2019 should be situated within the field of Internet censorship, network measurements, information controls, surveillance and content moderation. Ideally topics should connect to the following, but not limited to: - Technical, social, political, and economical implications of Internet censorship and surveillance - Detection and analysis of network blocking and surveillance infrastructure (hardware or software) - Research on legal frameworks, regulations and policies that imply blocking or limitation of the availability of network services and online content - Online censorship circumvention and anti-surveillance practices - Network measurements methodologies to detect and categorize network interference - Research on the implications of automated or centralized user content regulation (such as for hate speech, copyright, or disinformation) *Important Deadlines* Submission: Jan 29, 2019 Notification: Feb 18, 2019 Registration: Feb 27, 2019 Camera-ready: Feb 27, 2019 *Contribution Types* - Regular papers [in the proceedings, digital library] - Short papers (work in progress) [in the proceedings, digital library] - Posters: two pages [in the proceedings, digital library] - Posters: slide only [slide-deck posted on www.iaria.org] - Presentations: slide only [slide-deck posted on www.iaria.org] - Demos: two pages [posted on www.iaria.org] *Paper Format* - See: http://www.iaria.org/format.html - Before submission, please check and comply with the editorial rules: http://www.iaria.org/editorialrules.html Publications - Extended versions of selected papers will be published in IARIA Journals: http://www.iariajournals.org - Print proceedings will be available via Curran Associates, Inc.: http://www.proceedings.com/9769.html - Articles will be archived in the free access ThinkMind Digital Library: http://www.thinkmind.org *Paper Submission* https://www.iariasubmit.org/conferences/submit/newcontribution.php?event=IC…

Fwd: Call for Papers/Presentations, Sessions, and Demos
by Zeynep Engin 21 Nov '18

21 Nov '18

Please circulate widely your networks... Kind regards, Zeynep We invite contributions for the Data for Policy 2019 conference - Deadline: 28th January Call for Papers, Presentations, Sessions and Demos *Extended Abstract Submission Deadline: January, 28th* 4thInternational Conference *Data for Policy 2019:* Digital Trust and Personal Data 11-12 June 2019, London dataforpolicy.org <https://dataforpolicy.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0e48a758fb1eccb009e…> | @dataforpolicy <https://dataforpolicy.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0e48a758fb1eccb009e…> Data science technologies, pioneered in the private sector, are now ripe for transforming the public sector. However, both government policy and technology providers need to address two pressing public concerns: DIGITAL TRUST (privacy and security) and PERSONAL DATA (ownership and beneficial exploitation). The impact from ‘smartification*’ *of public infrastructure and services will be far more significant in comparison to any other sector given the government’s function and importance to every individual and institution. Potential applications range from public engagement through natural text and speech Chatbots, to providing decision support for civil servants via AI-based Robo-advisors, to real-time management of the public infrastructure through the Internet of Things and blockchain, to securing public records using distributed ledgers, and, encoding and codifying laws using smart contracts. However, in many cases current uses of automated decision-making systems have been shown to cause adverse impacts on important life events of individuals – examples range from bias in recruitment of job-applicants, to credit scoring in loans and insurance, and to sentencing of criminals. Also, state surveillance and manipulation of voter behaviour have become the early examples of how such developments may amplify the asymmetry of power (between citizen and those utilising such technologies) causing severe damage to the democratic processes. The Bitcoin ‘hype’, with its correlating energy usage, has also shown the environmental cost of the highly complex computations, as well as indicating other potential unpredicted and unintended consequences. On the other hand, the cost of not using – or the slow uptake of – data science technologies in the public sector is also potentially huge, given that all other aspects of our lives are changing fast under the ongoing digital revolution. It then follows that the stakes could be much higher in both the use and the avoidance of these technologies for public decision making and service delivery. This will require a careful cost/benefit analysis before implementation at scale. The fourth conference in the *Data for Policy *series therefore highlights *‘Digital Trust and Personal Data’ *as its main theme. The conference will also welcome contributions in the broader data science for government and policy discussions. In particular, submissions around the value and harm of using data in the public sector, deployment experience in government, ‘digital ethics’ and ‘ethics engineering’ concepts, personal data sharing frameworks and technologies, transparency in machine learning processes, analytics at source, and secure data transaction methodologies are encouraged. *Topics invited include but are not limited to the following:* - *Data, Government and Policy: *Digital era governance and democracy, data and politics, asymmetry of power, data- and evidence-driven public service delivery, algorithmic government and regulation, open-source and open-data movements, multinational companies and privatization of public services, sharing economy and peer-to-peer services, online communities, crowdsourcing, citizen science, public opinion, data literacy, policy laboratories, case studies and best practices. - *Technologies: *Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, blockchain distributed ledger and smart contract technologies, behavioural and predictive analytics, the Internet of Things, platforms, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), biometric identifiers, augmented and virtual reality, robotics, and other relevant technologies. - *Systems & Infrastructure: *Data collection, capture, storage, processing and visualisation technologies; platforms and web services, mobile applications, meta-data, standards and interoperability, databases and data warehousing, high performance computing, algorithms, programming, decision support systems, user-interaction technologies, and other relevant topics. - *Data Processing & Knowledge Generation:* Data representation and pre-processing, integration, real-time and historical data analysis, mathematical and statistical models, ‘data-driven’ analysis, human-in-the-loop (HITL); mixed methodologies, secondary data analysis, web mining; Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs), gaps in theory and practice, other relevant topics. - *Policy for Data & Management: *Data governance and regulatory frameworks; General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); data collection, storage, curation and access; data security, ownership, linkage; data provenance and expiration; private/public sector/non-profit collaboration and partnership; capacity-building and knowledge sharing within government; institutional forms and regulatory tools for data governance. - *Privacy, Security, Ethics & Law: *Ethical concerns around data, algorithms, and interactions (both human-machine and machine-machine interactions) and associated technology responses; legal status of digital systems; bias, transparency and accountability of digital systems; public rights, free speech, dialogue and trust. We also invite submissions for the following Special Tracks: - *Trading Data for Health: Balancing Ethics, Economics and Technology *- Track Chair: Anil *Bharath*, Imperial College London - *Data Practices, Lessons and Challenges: A Private-Sector (Business) Perspective* - Track Chair: Bilal *Gokpinar*, University College London - *Blockchain & Data Governance* - Track Chair: Catherine *Mulligan*, World Economic Forum, UN Digital Cooperation, Imperial, UCL - *Successful Uses of Data and AI for Public Good *– Track Chair: Tom *Smith*, Office for National Statistics, UK Contributions can be proposed in the following categories (please see the guidelines for more details). - *Individual Research/Policy/Practitioner Proposals (1000-word max.): *An extended abstract should be submitted, which includes a title, the research/policy question, the research methodology and data used, and key findings. - *Session Proposals (4500-word max.):* Session proposals are welcome. CfP 16th annual ICA Mobile Pre-conference, May 23, 2019 Washington, D.C.
by Rich Ling 21 Nov '18

21 Nov '18

Dear all, Please find the call for panel proposals for the 16th annual ICA Mobile Pre-conference. Rich Ling Boundary conditions in mobile communication: 16th annual ICA Mobile Pre-conference 2019 Call for Proposals Deadline for Workshop Proposals: Friday, December 31, 2018 Date & Time: May 23, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Tentative venue: The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum. Overview The theme of borders (national, political, social, personal) and transiting them, has become a central issue in society. Borders as the theme of his year’s ICA conference is a timely issue. The personal nature of mobile communication means that this form of mediation is increasingly central to these transitions. Migrants use mobile phones to orient themselves in transit and after they settle in new countries. Political movements use mobile communication to, in some cases break down and in other cases to develop borders. Mobile communication allows us to reach across social boundaries. Thus, there is an obvious connection between borders and our use of mobile communication to deal with them. At the 16th annual ICA Mobile pre-conference, we invite younger scholars (PhDs, postdocs and junior faculty), scholars from the Global South, along with their more established colleagues to consider these issues at the 16th annual Mobile Communication Pre-Conference. The pre-conference will be organized around several interactive Blue-Sky workshop sessions where we invite scholars to present ideas that are at various levels of gestation. Research ideas that are just being formed, ideas for mobile pedagogy, and notions of mobile applications used by practitioners in the field are welcome. This forum is designed to cultivate a supportive and integrated community of thinkers. Workshop themes can focus on any of the dimensions of mobile communication ranging from mobiles and social cohesion, mobile theory/methods, mobile communication and the news, mobile learning, entertainment, gaming and/or photography. They can look into mobile communication in organizations, mobile communication and development, mobile communication for social good and mobile communication as a means for threats to privacy, cyberbullying and/or robotification. Workshops could look into mobile romance, parenting mobiles, locative gaming, mHealth, and the relationships of mobile technologies to the elderly or children. They could focus on mobile communication in the Global South, mobile communication and migration, mobile journalism, etc. In short, we are open to a wide variety of themes associated with the use of mobile communication and mobile media in society. Workshop proposals are particularly welcomed from mobile-oriented scholars in the early stages of their careers. We also welcome established scholars to partner with younger colleagues in the development of proposals. Each workshop will be allocated a time slot of approximately 90 minutes. We are particularly interested to see proposals that include “hands-on” or interactive types of interaction. The workshop sessions should focus on the discussion of new ideas, theory and empirical results, but can also be more practical or industry oriented. A workshop will typically be organized around a consortium of four or five main participants who present and discuss their work but will also engage the audience. Pre-conference attendees can attend multiple workshops. Submissions should include a workshop summary of 500-800 words (excluding title and references). This summary should describe: 1. the topic and its relation to the pre-conference theme, 2. the goal of the workshop 3. the scheduled activity, detailing how participants and audience members will be involved, and 4. the participants and their relationship/contribution to the workshop. Proposals can be submitted via email to *icamobile2019(a)gmail.com <icamobile2019(a)gmail.com>*. The workshop summaries will be published online and in the printed program. Submissions will be reviewed by a committee of scholars. Proposals will be selected based on criteria of relevance, originality, the composition of the group, theoretical/practical contribution, the degree of interactivity with the audience, clarity of presentation, as well as fit with the conference theme. The review will be non-blind due to the interactive workshop nature. Notifications of acceptance will be emailed to contributors by early January 2019. How to participate: There will be a CFP distributed widely among communities of mobile communication scholars. The CFP will also be posted on the pre-conference (following the tradition of previous mobile communication pre-conferences). After gaining ICA approval, we will post the CFP at icamobile.org/2019/ How to participate: are there any other prerequisites? No How do participants register? Open to all Transportation: The location is within walking distance of the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro station. It is also about a 20-minute walk from the Hilton. Affiliation: Mobile Communication Interest Group

Digital Publics at Media@Sydney and DH Downunder 2018
by Justine Humphry 21 Nov '18

21 Nov '18

Digital Publics: Hidden and Untraceable Data Mon. 3 December 2018, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Philosophy Room S249, University of Sydney, Camperdown, NSW 2006 Human-machine communication is increasingly embedded in our everyday lives through the rise of social media, the Internet of Things (IoT), linked data, and so-called smart technologies such as connected homes, smart cars, and digital assistants. As our use of these technologies continues to grow and integrate with our personal lives, the early promise of machines increasing user communication and participation seems to have faded towards a world where humans primarily only communicate with machines and must participate or risk being excluded. These integrated and connected processes of human-machine communication are increasingly less visible over time as they become embedded in platforms, sensors and autonomous systems, while the obvious concern for citizens is an increase of user tracking and surveillance. This is a critical moment for expertise from a number of areas to collaboratively design and employ new approaches towards digital research methods, that can inform and work with publics, advise policy makers, and guide appropriate best practice for users of human-machine communication environments. Part of this year’s Digital Humanities Downunder Summer Institute, this Media@Sydney event will examine the current and emerging themes of human-machine communication, with a panel of leading experts discussing and applying their critical lens to this increasingly important area for citizens. Workshop on Exploratory Search and Interactive Data Analytics (ESIDA) Los Angeles, USA, March 20, 2019 Hosted by ACM IUI 2019, March 17-20, 201 https://sites.google.com/view/esida2019 Important dates Submission deadline: December 17, 2018 (midnight Hawaii time) Acceptance notification: January 23, 2019 Final manuscript due: February 6, 2019 Workshop Topic and Description In recent years, retrieval techniques operating on text or semantic annotations, have become the industry standard for retrieval from large data collections, such as documents, images, videos, music, medical data. This approach works well with sufficient high-quality meta-data or tagging. However, with the explosive growth of big data collections, it has become apparent that tagging new data quickly and efficiently is not always possible. Secondly, even if instantaneous high-quality data tagging were possible, there would still be many instances, where search by keyword query is problematic. For example, in the case of image retrieval it might be easier for a user to define their query if they are looking for an image of a cat, but how would they specify that the cat should be of a particular shade of ginger with sad looking eyes? A solution to these problems is active engagement of the user in the information retrieval loop, thus enabling the user to not only explore a given dataset more easily but also gradually direct their search to a more specific area of the search space. The aim of this workshop is to explore new methods and interface/system design for interactive data analytics and management in various domains, including specialised text collections (e.g. legal, medical, scientific), multimedia, and bioinformatics, as well as for various tasks, such as semantic information retrieval, conceptual organization and clustering of data collections for sense-making, semantic expert profiling, and document/multimedia recommender systems. The primary audience of the workshop is researchers and practitioners in the area of interactive and personalized system design as well as interactive machine learning both from academia and industry. IUI, with its focus on the intersection of HCI and AI, is a perfect venue where researchers from system/interface design community and the machine learning community can meet. Workshop Target Areas The workshop aims to solicit submissions in all areas of interactive data analytics and exploratory search including: - design, testing and assessment of interactive systems for data analytics - interactive data visualization for exploratory and investigative analysis - interactive classification and clustering of data - user-assisted curation and validation of the analysis process, and generation of data visualizations - user engagement in the semantic analysis process via suitable annotation and correction tools - study of the trade-off between accuracy of the results and user effort - personalization and user modeling related to interactive system design Submissions aimed at solving practical problems in specific application domains are especially welcome, including: - digital libraries - legal document management - personalized online learning systems - news media - biomedical data - multimedia collections - specialized image and video collections, e.g. medical images. We encourage submissions of work in progress, concept papers, case studies, and generally material that will stimulate discussion, generate useful feedback to the authors, encourage research collaborations and vigorous exchange of ideas on promising research directions, in one of the following formats: - full papers (up to 8 pages in the ACM SIGCHI format), which will be presented either as contributed talks or posters - extended abstracts (up to 4 pages in the ACM SIGCHI format), which will be presented as posters with a possibility to be accompanied by a demo.
