Call for Participation: "Datafication and Community Activism." UC Irvine 3/8/2019 - 3/9/2019
by Roderic Crooks 19 Nov '18

19 Nov '18

All: Here is the CFP for a workshop I’m putting together at UC Irvine in March. Application due 1/15/2019. Please share widely and address questions to Roderic Crooks (crooksr(a)uci.edu <mailto:crooksr@uci.edu>). Thanks very much. https://goo.gl/MXa7u1 <https://goo.gl/MXa7u1> Call for Participation Datafication and Community Activism: Redrawing the Boundaries of Research A workshop to be held in the Department of Informatics, University of California, Irvine Irvine, California March 8 – 9, 2019 Organized by Roderic Crooks (crooksr(a)uci.edu <mailto:crooksr@uci.edu>), Assistant Professor, Department of Informatics. Yeshimabeit Milner, Executive Director, Data 4 Black Lives. Datafication, “the transformation of social action into online quantified data, thus allowing for real-time tracking and predictive analysis” (van Dijck, 2014, p. 198) describes both the spread of data-intensive technologies and a concomitant ideological stake in a politics of knowledge. This transformation ignores the ways that algorithms, models, and data schema can serve as vehicles for bias and further oppression (Noble, 2018). Data-intensive technologies of “automated inequality” in their various forms, though originally developed in the context of scientific and commercial environments, are being deployed relentlessly in racialized, minoritized, and precariatized communities: in provision of public services by government agencies, in bail decisions by the criminal justice system, in threat assessment by law enforcement, and in many other sites (Eubanks, 2017). Activists have responded to these threats through organizing, direct action, and, in many cases, reports and documents that support grassroots activism. (e.g., Stop LAPD Spying Coalition, 2018). Community-based researchers have connected state-of-art technologies to long histories of oppression and violence in communities of color. Writing by activists educates community members and policymakers about the harms data capture can pose and, at the same time, offers more meaningful alternatives to the presumed benefits of technological access in minoritized communities (Crooks, 2017). What are the possibilities for technology researchers to engage with activists in response to the challenges posed to our communities by data-intensive modes of governance and administration? How can research support social movements in exposing the role of technology in constraining, (infra)structuring, and directing the civil sphere? How might scholars dedicated to studying and serving minortized communities redraw the boundaries of research and activism to address the concerns of our home communities, build solidarity, and contribute to collective resiliency? This workshop and working group will meet to map out new research agendas that draw on, support, and advance activist responses to datafication in minoritized communities. We invite scholars, journalists, graduate students, artists, adjunct lecturers, para-academics, public scholars, community activists, and data/information professionals interested in thinking through the relationship between activism and research to join this forum. The goal of the two-day workshop will be to identify an actionable research agenda that will support the interests of minoritized communities and to build an intellectual network to support this work. The workshop will feature a talk by Yeshimabet Milner, Executive Director of Data for Black Lives (http://d4bl.org <http://d4bl.org/>), “a group of activists, organizers, and mathematicians committed to the mission of using data science to create concrete and measurable change in the lives of Black people.” Topics for discussion might include: · Intersectional feminist, critical race, indigenous, and/or postcolonial approaches to data studies; · Publications and grey literature to support community self-defense and activism; · Interventionist science and technology studies; · Working in and with minoritzed and precariatized communities; · Pedagogy and teaching strategies for community liberation; · Immaterial, emotional and affective labor in activism and social movements; · Resistance, non-participation, and speculative engagements with politics. People interested in participating should send a 250-word statement of research/statement of activism to crooksr(a)uci.edu <mailto:crooksr@uci.edu> by January 15, 2019. Please include in this statement what you would like to contribute to this workshop and what you would like to get out of it. In addition, please include a 100-word bio. Submissions will be reviewed and participants will be invited by Feb 1, 2019. Participation will be capped at 20 people. Meals will be provided. Limited support for travel and lodging is available: priority for funding goes to students and those without institutional support. We welcome your questions. Please contact crooksr(a)uci.edu <mailto:crooksr@uci.edu> with any related inquiry. References Crooks, R. N. (2018). Times Thirty: Access, Maintenance, and Justice. Call for papers: ICAME 40 pre-conference workshop on corpus approaches to social media
by Daria Dayter 19 Nov '18

19 Nov '18

Dear colleagues, we invite your submissions to a pre-conference workshop "Corpus Approaches to Social Media" which is to take place on June 1, 2019, in Neuchatel, Switzerland, before the main ICAME 40 event. Submission deadline: December 15, 2018 Submission link and the full CFP text: https://icame40.ch/program/pre-conference-workshops/ Workshop conveners: Sofia Rüdiger & Daria Dayter Workshop Description Language-centered research on online interactions has been steadily gaining momentum since the days of early Web 2.0. Corpora creation in this field, however, offers a set of new challenges that pre-internet or even Web 1.0 researchers did not have to reckon with. This workshop will therefore focus on the collection, analysis, and processing of corpora of single- and multi-modal, synchronous and asynchronous communication on different social media platforms and channels and the challenges connected to these research endeavors. We invite submissions from scholars working on a range of social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, SMS and WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram, gaming chats, blog comments sections, wiki discussions, and YouTube comments. The contributions will describe various aspects of data collection, annotation, processing, and exploitation of machine-readable corpora for research in the humanities. The workshop thus brings together language-centered research on interactive social media in linguistics, communication studies, media studies, and social sciences with research questions from the fields of corpus and computational linguistics, language technology, and text analytics. We intend to create a forum to address the following challenges of corpus-based studies in the realm of social media: - Ethical issues of accessing and harvesting data and making it available as a part of “open data” initiatives, especially in multimodal analysis when removing an image impoverishes the analysis - Legal issues of accessing and harvesting data, and the question of our social responsibility as scientists outweighing legal concerns (cf. the case of Fivethirtyeight sharing a corpus of Russian trolls’ tweets) - Difficulty obtaining data which is often very rich in personal information and subjects therefore being reluctant to donate their WhatsApp chats or Facebook conversations - Technical challenges of collecting and storing corpora (including how-to talks, sharing experiences in using available tools such as Trendalyzer, Tweet Visualiser, twXplorer, DiscoverText, Twitter StreamGraph, WebAnno, CATMA) - Annotation of social media corpora: inter-coder reliability; reconciling the need for tailor-made annotation with the standardization drive - Lemmatization, POS tagging, syntactic parsing, and named entity recognition Call for Papers We welcome contributions which address the issues mentioned above as standalone subjects, but also invite presentations approaching these matters within the framework of concrete corpus studies of social media, for example, in the realm of sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, translanguaging and code-switching, applied linguistics, multimodality, as well as descriptions of social media registers. *Abstracts of max. 500 words (including references) should be submitted online via www.icame40.ch/login <http://www.icame40.ch/login>*. The deadline for abstract submission is 15 December 2018. Notification of acceptance will be sent out by January 10. If you have any questions, please contact the workshop conveners under daria.dayter(a)unibas.ch best wishes, Daria Dayter and Sofia Rüdiger Dr. Daria Dayter Department of English - University of Basel Postdoctoral Assistant Nadelberg 6, room 15 CH-4051 Basel / Switzerland Tel: 0041 - 61 - 2 07 27 82 Email: daria.dayter(a)unibas.ch https://english.philhist.unibas.ch/en/persons/daria-dayter/

Call for Proposals- Privacy Camp 2019: Platforms, Politics, Participation
by Imge Ozcan 16 Nov '18

16 Nov '18

*Privacy Camp 2019: Platforms, Politics, Participation* Privacy Camp will take place on 29 January 2019 in Brussels, Belgium, just before the start of the CPDP conference. Privacy Camp brings together civil society, policy-makers and academia to discuss existing and looming problems for human rights in the digital environment. Call for Proposals: Platforms, Politics, Participation Privacy Camp 2019 will focus on digital platforms, their societal impact and political significance. Due to the rise of a few powerful companies such as Uber, Facebook, Amazon or Google, the term “platform” has moved beyond its initial computational meaning of technological architecture and has come to be understood as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Platforms are said to facilitate and shape human interactions, thus becoming important economic and political actors. While the companies offering platform services are increasingly the target of regulative action, they are also considered as allies of national and supranational institutions in enforcing policies voluntarily and gauging political interest and support. Digital platforms employ business models that rely on the collection of large amounts of data and the use of advanced algorithms, which raise concerns about their surveillance potential and their impact on political events. Increasingly rooted in the daily life of many individuals, platforms monetise social interactions and turn to questionable labor practices. Many sectors and social practices are being “platformised”, from public health to security, from news to entertainment services. Lately, some scholars have conceptualised this phenomenon as “platform capitalism” or “platform society”. Privacy Camp 2019 will unpack the implications of “platformisation” for the socio-political fabric, human rights and policy making. In particular, how does the platform logic shape our experiences and the world we live in? How do institutional actors attempt to regulate platforms? In what ways do the affordances and constraints of platforms shape how people share and make use of their data? Participate! We welcome panel proposals relating to the broad theme of platforms. Besides classic panel proposals we are also seeking short contributions for our workshop “Situating Platforms: User Narratives”. 1. Panel proposals We are particularly interested in panel proposals on the following topics: platform economy and labour; algorithmic bias; democratic participation and social networks. Submission guidelines: · Indicate a clear objective for your session, i.e. what would be a good outcome for you? · Indicate other speakers that could participate in your panel (and let us know which speaker has already confirmed, at least in principle, to participate). · Make it as participative as possible, think about how to include the audience and diverse actors. Note that the average panel length is 75 minutes. · Send us a description of no more than 400 words. 2. “Situating Platforms: User Narratives” submissions In an effort to discuss situated contexts with regard to platforms, we will have a session on lived practices and user narratives. Individuals, civil society groups or community associations are welcome to contribute in the format of a short talk or show & tell demonstration. Details and the online submission form are here: https://framaforms.org/your-platform-story-1539768957 Deadline *The deadline for all submissions is 18 November*. After the deadline, we will review your submission and let you know by the end of November whether your proposal can be included in the programme. It is possible that we suggest merging panel proposals if they are very similar. Please send your proposal via email to privacycamp(at)edri.org! If you have questions, please contact Kirsten at kirsten.fiedler(at)edri(dot)org or Imge at imge.ozcan(at)vub(dot)be. 16 Nov '18

*** SECOND CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS *** 27th ACM International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (ACM UMAP 2019) Golden Bay Beach Hotel 5*, Larnaca, Cyprus, June 9-12, 2019 http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… Proposals due: December 14, 2018 ACM UMAP 2019, the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users or to groups of users, and which collect, represent, and model user information, is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The workshops provide a venue to discuss and explore emerging areas of User Modelling and Adaptive Hypermedia research with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from industry and academia. In this edition, our goal is to have a balanced workshop program comprising different workshop formats and combining emerging and established research topics. Different full-day and half-day workshop schemas are possible, such as: · Working group meetings around a specific problem or topic; participants may be asked to submit a white paper or position statement. · Mini-conferences on specialized topics, having their own paper submission and review processes. · Mini-competitions or challenges around selected topics with individual or team participation. · Interactive discussion meetings focusing on subtopics of the UMAP general research topics. PROPOSAL FORMAT Workshop proposals should be submitted in PDF format to both workshop chairs, not exceeding 5 pages and organized as follows: · Workshop title and acronym. · Workshop chair(s), including affiliation, email address, homepage, and experiences in organizing such events. · Abstract (up to 300 words) and topics of interest. · Motivation on why the workshop is of particular interest at this time. · Workshop format, discussing the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, and general discussions. · Intended audience and expected number of participants. · List of (potential) members of the program committee (at least 50% have to be confirmed at the time of the proposal). · Requested duration (half day or full day). · When available, past editions of the workshop, including URLs, a brief statement on the development of the workshop series, e.g., in terms of topics, number of paper submissions and participants, post-workshop publications over the years and acceptance statistics. INSTRUCTIONS We encourage both researchers and industry practitioners to submit workshop proposals. Researchers interested in submitting a workshop proposal are invited to contact us in advance, so we can help to design successful proposals. In particular, for workshop proposals with novel interactive formats, we are happy to assist in further developing and implementing the ideas. We strongly suggest to have organizers from different institutions, bringing different perspectives to the workshop topic. We welcome workshops with a creative structure that may attract various types of contributions and may ensure rich interactions. The organizers of accepted workshops will prepare a workshop web site containing the call for papers and detailed information about the workshop organization and timeline. Hello all - I'm co-author (with Lauren Klein of Georgia Tech) of the book *Data Feminism. *The book will be coming out in 2020 with MIT Press but we are doing an experiment with MIT's PubPub to open up the first draft for online, public peer review, and it's just gone live: https://bookbook.pubpub.org/data-feminism *Data Feminism* shows how feminist thinking can be applied to work towards more ethical and equitable data science and communication practices. It is oriented to a general audience and is driven by stories, cases and examples. The commenting period on PubPub is open until Jan 7th, 2019. We would be very thankful for this community's feedback. Best wishes from snow in Boston, Catherine -- Catherine D'Ignazio Assistant Professor, Emerson College Senior Fellow, Emerson Engagement Lab Research Affiliate, MIT Center for Civic Media @kanarinka | www.kanarinka.com | 617-501-2441
