Call for Papers / Submission system now open: "DATA POWER: global in/securities" international conference
by Leif Kramp 01 Dec '18

01 Dec '18

Call for Papers / Submission system now open for: DATA POWER: global in/securities A two-day, international conference Date: Thursday 12th and Friday 13th September 2019 Venue: University of Bremen, Germany Deadline for submissions: 31st January 2019 With increasingly globalized digital infrastructures and a global digital political economy, we face new concentrations of power, leading to new inequalities and insecurities with respect to data ownership, data geographies and different data-related practices. It is not only a concentration of power by a few corporations, but also a concentration of the availability of data in individual regions of the world. This includes (exerting) power about data (infra)structures and processes of data creation, data collection, data access, data processing, data interpretation, data storing, data visualisations. The Global in/securities theme of the 2019 Data Power conference attends to questions around these phenomena, asking: How does data power further or contest global in/securities? How are global in/securities constructed through or against data? How do civil society actors, government, people engage with societal and individual in/securities through and with data? What are appropriate ontologies to think about data and persons? How may we envisage a just data society? And what does decolonizing data in/securities look like? This conference creates a space to reflect on these and other critical issues relating to data’s in/security and its decolonizing. Confirmed keynote speakers are: • Virginia Eubanks, University at Albany, USA; • Jack Linchuan Qiu, Chinese University Hongkong; • Seeta Peña Gangadaran, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK; • Nimmi Rangaswamy, Indian Institute of Information Technology, IIIT, Hyderabad, India. Papers and panels are invited on the following – and other relevant – topics: • Big data and humanitarianism • Big/open data, corruption and public debt • ‘Good’ data, data justice and well-being • Critical, theoretical and feminist approaches to data in/securities • Data activism, citizen engagement, indigenous data sovereignty and open data • Data journalism and rhetorics of data visualization in a global perspective • Data-driven governance and open data • Securitization and militarization of data infrastructures • Data, discrimination and inequality • Emerging in/securities through algorithms and automated decision-making • Forensic data, human rights and refugees • Decolonizing data in/securities and data labor • Machine learning, developmentalism and human security Information/details • Please submit 250-word-paper proposals, using the online submission system at https://portal.smart-abstract.com/data-power • The deadline for paper proposals is 31st January 2019. • The conference fee is 200 Euro, and 100 Euro for students. There will be travel grants for participants from the global south and PhD student fee waivers (please indicate the need when applying) • The organising committee will select papers for a special theme proposal to be submitted to the peer reviewed journals Big Data & Society and International Communication Gazette. • For information on travel visa, please visit the following web page: https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/what-we-do/policies/borders-and-visas/vis… Letters of invitation will be sent by the conference organizers. https://www.uni-bremen.de/data-power-global-insecurities/call-for-papers-re…

by Noella Edelmann 30 Nov '18

30 Nov '18

***Apologies for cross-posting!*** Social Media Track EGOV-CeDEM-ePart 2019 Conference CfP: https://easychair.org/cfp/egovcedemepart2019 Submission website: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=egovcedemepart2019 Digital and social media are central for government, public administration, democratic and political processes and communication. One the one hand they are increasingly important interface between governments, the public sector and their respective publics, and on the other hand, they also play an important role for innovation in the public sector, improving public service delivery and providing opportunities for public participation. Social media applications and digital tools have also reshaped the nature of collaboration within public organizations, across governance networks, impacting political communication and campaigning. Whilst social media is extensively used in politics and by political figures, governments still struggle to understand how best to use social media and to develop a social media strategy, how to implement them for operational activities and the digital transformation of the organisation, improve services and achieve change and strategic goals. We invite relevant studies on social media in the public sector that draw on conceptual, case study, survey, mixed or other suitable methods. Areas of focus and interest include but are not limited to the following topics: New theoretical perspectives and critical analyses of digital interactions; Strategies and policies for the planning and implementation of social media; Use and significance of social analytics in political communication and public organizations; Organizational issues relevant to the implementation of social media in democratic contexts and the transformation of public administration; Stakeholders and digital publics of government engagement on social media; Enterprise/organizational networking and knowledge sharing applications; Internal and informal digital networks in public administration; The role of social media in digital transformation; The use of technology and social media for co-production, crowdsourcing, citizen-sourcing, co-creation and other crowd-based models (e.g. in regulation, bottom-up initiatives, open source movements); Mobilisation, social movements and other forms of digital engagement enabled by social media; Social media in crisis and emergency management; Ethical, privacy, regulatory and policy issues related to social media; Evaluation of the impact of social media in various contexts; New methods, challenges and opportunities of social media data; Design methods and user experience in digital collaboration; Track Chairs: Noella Edelmann, Danube University Krems, Austria Sara Hofmann, University of Agder, Norway Marius Rohde Johannessen, University of South-Eastern Norway Programme Committee: Rodrigo Sandoval Almazan, Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico Peter Bellström, Karlstad University, Sweden Alessio Maria Braccini, Università degli Studi della Tuscia, Italy Eiri Elvestad, University of South-Eastern Norway Loukis Euripides, University of the Aegean, Greece Montathar Faraon, Kristianstad University, Sweden Mila Gasco, CTG Albany, USA Dimitris Gouscos, University of Athens, Greece Evika Karamagioli, Uni Paris 8, France Azi Lev-On Ariel University, Israel Agnes Mainka, Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Germany Yuri Misnikov, University of Leeds, United Kingdom Michael Räckers, University of Münster, Germany Rodrigo Sandoval Almazan, Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico Margit Scholl, TH Wildau, Germany Øystein Sæbø, University of Agder, Norway Ella Taylor-Smith, Edinburgh Napier University, United Kingdom Jolien Ubacht - TU Delft, The Netherlands Qinfeng Zhu, City University, Hong Kong Important Dates: (Hard) deadline for submissions: 17 March 2019 Notification of acceptance: 30 April 2019 Poster submission deadline (non-anonymous-camera ready): 15 May 2019 Poster acceptance: 1 June 2019 Camera-ready paper submission and author registration: 1 June 2019 Conference: 2-4 September 2019 PhD Colloquium: 1 September 2019 Types of Submissions & Publications: We invite individuals from academic and applied backgrounds as well as from business, public authorities, NGOs, NPOs and education institutions to submit their completed and ongoing research papers, reflections, posters as well as practitioner papers, panel or workshop proposals to the topics addressed in the tracks. CfP CONVERGENCE Back to the Future: Telling and Taming Anticipatory Media Visions and Technologies
by Christian Pentzold 30 Nov '18

30 Nov '18

CALL FOR PROPOSALS Special Issue of Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies Back to the Future: Telling and Taming Anticipatory Media Visions and Technologies Guest editors: Christian Pentzold (University of Bremen, Germany), Anne Kaun (Södertörn University, Sweden), and Christine Lohmeier (University of Salzburg, Austria) Digital media, networked services, and aggregate data are beacons of the future. These incessantly emerging tools and infrastructures project new ways of communication, bring unknown kinds of information, and open up untrodden paths of interaction. Yet digital technologies do not only forecast uncharted times or predict what comes next. They are, it seems, both prognostic and progressive media: they don’t await the times to come but realize the utopian as well as dystopian visions which they have always already foreseen. At the same time, all calculation of anticipations has to rely on past data that profoundly shape our ability to manage expectations and minimize uncertainties. In these fast forward dynamics, the special issue of Convergence examines the futuremaking capacity of networked services and aggregate data. We ask contributions to consider: What role do digital technologies and data play in the construction and circulation of future knowledge, e.g., through forecasting, modelling, prediction, or prognosis? What expectations and anticipatory visions such as promise or warning do accompany the creation and diffusion of new media? Over the course of history, which imaginaries of social and technological futures have been propelled by the media innovations at that time? How do new media technologies and discourses contribute to the production and reproduction of social time that is future oriented? How do they impact on the ability to exert control over the future? Papers in this special issue will explore the future making dimension of new media and may include the following topics: • Role of media in reconfiguring the relations and distances among present, past, and future times • Communicative construction of differently vast and (un)certain horizons of expectation • Data-based modes of anticipation (e.g., prognosis, prediction, prevention, precaution, pre-emption); calculative practices and other kinds of speculative accounts of possible events • Historical succession of past future visions around media innovations and mediated social life • Imaginaries of futures related to digital media • Interventions into the plans, efforts, and processes of constructing futures • Backwards-orientation of forecasting and conservative aspects of future scenarios • New media in the production of simultaneity, coincidence, or (non)contemporaneity Submissions: Proposals should include the author's name and affiliation, title, an abstract of 500 words, and 3 to 5 keywords, and should be sent to the e-mail address no later than 1 December 2018: mediatizedtime(a)uni-bremen.de <mailto:mediatizedtime@uni-bremen.de> Invited paper submissions will be due 1 June 2019 and will undergo peer review following the usual procedures of the journal. The invitation to submit a full article does not guarantee acceptance into the special issue. The special issue will be published in 2020. by James O'Sullivan 29 Nov '18

29 Nov '18

*Apologies for cross-posting* Proposals are now being accepted for presentations and exhibition pieces at the annual Electronic Literature Organization Conference and Media Arts Festival, to be held July 15-17, 2019 at University College Cork, Ireland. Electronic literature, or e-lit, refers to literary works wherein computation forms some essential part of the aesthetic. #ELO19 offers an opportunity to share research and creative contributions within an engaging, collegial atmosphere comprising e-lit scholars and practitioners from across the globe. *For more, see: http://elo2019.ucc.ie/cfp/ <http://elo2019.ucc.ie/cfp/>* The theme for this year’s ELO gathering is “peripheries”: delegates are invited to explore the edges of literary and digital culture, including emerging traditions, indeterminate structures and processes, fringe communities of praxis, effaced forms and genres, marginalised bodies, and perceptual failings. #ELO19 will mark the first time that the ELO conference has been hosted by an Irish institution: join us for this momentous gathering! *Conference Papers* We invite proposals of ~500 words for conference presentations. Proposals may focus on any topic relating to the wider field of electronic literature, multimodal writing, digital art, literary games, or new media aesthetics. Submissions are welcome across the following two formats: I. 20-minute presentation of a single paper by one or more authors. II. 90-minute panel proposal, incorporating three separate but related abstracts on a consistent topic. In addition to individual abstracts, panel proposals should be accompanied by ~200 word summaries of their overall research emphasis. Please note that we are not in a position to accommodate requests by presenters who wish to present on a specific date. Please submit proposals using EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=elo2019 Submissions should include the title of the submission, the name(s) and affiliation(s) of contributor(s), biographical notes, and a 500-word abstract. *The deadline for submissions is December 21st, 11pm GMT*. Submissions will be peer-reviewed, with authors being notified in early 2019. *Exhibition Pieces* We invite proposals of digital artworks and e-lit pieces to be featured as part of #ELO19’s media arts exhibition to be hosted at the Glucksman Gallery <http://elo2019.ucc.ie/glucksman/> throughout and beyond the conference. All forms of electronic literature, multimodal writing, digital art, and screen fiction will be considered. We will also consider performance pieces, for which a session will be scheduled if required. Submissions should conform to the following structure: I. Author name(s), affiliation(s), and biographical notes; II. 500-word artist statement detailing the aesthetic intentions and structure of the piece; III. Technical specification providing exact details of what will be required to facilitate the work’s inclusion in the exhibition. Technical specifications should include information on the materials, technologies, and spatial requirements necessary, and what they will require the Gallery to provide. Please submit proposals using EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=elo2019 *The deadline for submissions is December 21st, 11pm GMT. *Submissions will be considered by the exhibition’s curators, with artists being notified in early 2019.

CFP Special Issue Migration, Digital Media and Emotion * International Journal of Cultural Studies *
by Leurs, K.H.A. (Koen) 29 Nov '18

29 Nov '18

Dear colleagues, Apologies for cross-posting, kindly consider submitting and/or distributing the following CFP among your colleagues and networks. Kindly send your questions to the editors Donya Alinejad and Sandra Ponzanesi directly, Best wishes, Koen Leurs ** Call for Papers * INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CULTURAL STUDIES ** Migration, Digital Media and Emotion ** Guest edited by Sandra Ponzanesi and Donya Alinejad Utrecht University (The Netherlands) * In contexts of migration and transnational mobility, spheres of lived sociality have long spanned borders and nation-state territories. More recently, however, the use of mobile digital devices has become ubiquitous within many forms of migratory mobility, especially when they come paired with the latest iteration of Web 2.0, or “the social web.” Yet these developments in media technologies not only allow for information exchange but also foster a globally mediatized emotional exchange, which leads to new interactions between media, migration, and emotion. As the use of these devices and platforms penetrates the most intimate relationships and exchanges shaped by transnational distances and mobility, we are reminded anew of how migration has always been shaped by more than rational, economic considerations. * Nonetheless there is a paucity of studies on the connection between media and emotion in migration contexts. This raises urgent questions about how social media usages mediate the emotionality of contemporary migration experiences, not only for new media and communication studies, but also in neighboring disciplines such as anthropology, postcolonial studies, gender studies, psychology, and sociology. Theoretical understandings of emotion and affect as being defined not by discrete inner states but as residing in the relations people have to their surroundings, things, and other people have opened up an array of possibilities for investigating emotionality as quintessentially social and always mediated. * We are therefore interested in contributions that relate to the following themes and questions: - How does digital media reshape the experience of migration by bridging distance through digital intimacy? - How are emotions, affect, feelings and sentiments articulated online? - How are feelings of togetherness and co-presence experienced across distances in particular ways through social media practices? - How are migrants’ emotional relationships with communities, diaspora, and/or homelands shaped by social media? - Which forms of transnational emotional communication emerge as specific to social media use? And what are the (potential) implications? - How do social media apps fit into older regimes of emotional mediation for migrants and highly mobile people? - What is the role of visuality in the digital mediation of emotions in migrant contexts of the social media age? E.g. emojis, photo-sharing, audio-visual social media posts. - In which ways can we go beyond the normativity of transnational families in the study of feelings of home and belonging through social media? Contributions can include, but need not be limited to themes of: - Mobile, digitally mediated spatio-emotional engagement in the cities of residence, - Experiences of transnational co-presence through social media, - New kinds of digitally mediated relationships within diaspora as well as with other “host country” residents/citizens, - Formations of and (political) engagement with networked affective publics, - Intergenerational and life-cycle shifts or discontinuities in the diaspora community and/or family communications, - And the use of social media in (implicit or overt) subversions of the homogenous nation as a reference point. * This special issue aims to bring together scholars working on a variety of theoretical and methodological issues arising from theoretical as well as empirical investigation of emotion and affect as it relates to migrant sociality mediated through a range of social media, apps, platforms, and digital media as they emerge in a variety of socio- cultural and geographic locales across the globe. * Guest editors: Donya Alinejad, Postdoctoral researcher, Department of Media and Culture Studies, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. d.alinejad(a)uu.nl Sandra Ponzanesi, Professor of Gender and Postcolonial Studies, Department of Media and Culture Studies, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. s.ponzanesi(a)uu.nl * Timeline: -Abstract submission deadline: 15.02.2019 -Notification of acceptance/selection: 31.03.2019 -Deadline for full papers: 31.08.2019 * Submission: Proposals of 500-750 words should include an abstract and a short description explaining whether/how previous or current research relates to the special issue theme. Please also include a short bio of 250 words including name, affiliation, and contact details. * Please submit your proposal no later than 15 February, 2019. Invited paper submissions will be due 31 August 2019 and will undergo peer review following the usual procedures. Please send submissions to d.alinejad(a)uu.nl and s.ponzanesi(a)uu.nl. We look forward to receiving your submissions. --
