Call for hosting proposals - first joint CEPE-ETHICOMP conferences, June-July 2014
by Charles Ess 03 Feb '13

03 Feb '13

Dear AoIRists, With the usual apologies for duplicates and cross-postings, please send this along to potentially interested colleagues and/or institutions. == Call for Proposals: Conference hosting, first joint CEPE-ETHICOMP conferences, June-July 2014 Important dates: Expressions of interest due: March 31, 2013 Full proposals due: May 31, 2013 The Organizing Committee for CEPE / ETHICOMP´14: Charles Ess (University of Oslo; President, INSEIT), Conference Chair <c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no> Shalini Kesar (Southern Utah University); Programme Chair <skesar(a)gmail.com> Elizabeth Buchanan (University of Wisconsin-Stout; Executive Director, INSEIT) <buchanane(a)uwstout.edu> Bernd Carsten Stahl (De Montfort University; Chair, ETHICOMP Steering Committee) <bstahl(a)dmu.ac.uk> Direct submissions to: Charles Ess, Conference Chair: <c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no> Background Since 1995 the ETHICOMP conference series has provided a forum to discuss the ethical and social issues surrounding Information and Communication Technology. Over 900 papers have been presented at 12 conferences by individuals from all parts of the world. But ETHICOMP is more than this it is an interdisciplinary community dedicated to exploring issues and seeking ways forward. The next ETHICOMP conference will take place in June 2013 in Kolding, Denmark (see <http://www.sdu.dk/en/Om_SDU/Institutter_centre/Idk/ethicomp2013>) The CEPE (Computer Ethics: Professional Enquiries) conferences are international fora promoting dialogue between moral philosophy and the field of information and communication technology (ICT). They are sponsored by the International Society for Ethics in Information Technology (INSEIT), founded in 2000 with a focus on the ethical issues in and surrounding ICT. The next CEPE conference will take place in Lisbon in July 2013. (see <http://www.cepe2013.com/> In the summer of 2014 (June/July), the ETHICOMP and CEPE conferences will hold their first joint conferences. While each conference series has developed its distinctive culture, identity, and primary areas of focus both conferences have established traditions of fostering interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue concerning important ethical issues shaping the information society. Both conferences clearly share common interests in ethics and computing. Both conferences maintain a high academic standard: contributions are peer reviewed, published in conference proceedings, and sometimes inspire journal special issues. In light of these shared interests and purposes, we have agreed to hold our 2014 conferences jointly ideally, at the same physical location, with perhaps some overlapping conference experiences (e.g., a shared keynote, reception, and/or conference track). By doing so, we anticipate that the interdisciplinary goals of both organizations will be met even more powerfully and enjoyably. At the same time, we hope to realize some economies of scale through such an approach, thereby making more efficient use of increasingly scarce resources. (Each conference typically runs for ca. 2 to 2.5 days. For planning purposes, we are beginning with the assumption of joint conferences taking place over 4-5 days, in either mid-to-late June or early-to-mid July, 2014, depending on local logistics, etc.) Invitation We seek expressions of interest and/or proposals from individuals and/or institutions interested in hosting CEPE-ETHICOMP¹14 and taking primary responsibility for local organization and conference logistics. The proposal should contain the following headings: Name and contact detail of lead individual Name and short description of host organization Prior experience in hosting and organizing conferences Clear statement of support from the host organization(s) including, e.g., in-kind contributions of conference venue, AV/IT technical support, and so forth Initial suggestions and ideas regarding accommodation possibilities, including budget alternatives for graduate students; hospitality arrangements (e.g., receptions, conference dinners, etc); and other logistical support (e.g., available public transit, nearby international airport(s), etc.) Potential applicants are encouraged to contact any member of the Organizing Committee during the preparation of their applications. Tasks The successful applicants will work with the conference Organizing Committee, Conference Chair, and Programme Chair during the preparation of the conferences. Their main tasks will be: Preparation of venue Preparation of schedule (in collaboration with Programme chair) Organisation of accommodation and social programme, including requisite transportation arrangements Development of the budget for the conference Dialogue with the Organizing Committee and Programme Chair regarding the development of conference tracks, themes, track chairs, etc. Selection Criteria The Organizing Committee will review proposals in light of: advance indication of institutional support on the part of the individual(s) putting forward the proposal a geographical location that has not recently been represented as a conference location ease of access to the conference venue/location in terms of easy and economic forms of transportation value for money, i.e. ability to keep conference cost low for participants a large enough venue to hold the prospective numbers of attendees (estimated between 120-180 total) a team of both younger scholars including graduate students and more senior scholars, with interests in ethics and ICT as well as in effective organization of all logistical aspects of the conference (e.g., hosting, rooms and bookings, associated conference proceedings, etc.). Those interested in submitting a proposal for hosting are encouraged to contact Charles Ess and/or any other member of the Organizing Committee with any questions, requests for clarification, etc. Many thanks in advance, Charles Ess Associate Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication Lifetime member, Association of Internet Researchers Director, Centre for Research on Media Innovations <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/research/center/media-innovations/> University of Oslo P.O. Question about citing specific Reddit pages
by Rysavy, Wayne Erik 01 Feb '13

01 Feb '13

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could clarify the best way to cite specific Reddit comment pages related to area-specific content. I typically cite in APA, but since Redditors create comment pages in sharing images, links, and/or stories and then form a subsequent comment page based around their submissions, I'm not exactly sure how to reference the material. I want to reference the comment page created by a Redditor, in particular. For example, if I want to cite this comment page (http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/17pftd/electronic_arts_suffers_…) how would I do that? I am relatively new to AoIR, so I haven't seen any discussion about this and would appreciate any feedback you can provide. I'm using certain discussions in comment pages on Reddit within a paper I am working on and have not cited from this site before. Again, thank you, any help is appreciated. Best, Wayne Erik Rysavy, M.A. Doctoral Student and Teaching Fellow Department of Communication Studies University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 115 Bingham, CB#3285 Chapel Hill, NC 27599 wrysavy(a)email.unc.edu

New Issue of CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East
by Vit Sisler 01 Feb '13

01 Feb '13

Dear colleagues, it is my pleasure to inform you that a new issue of CyberOrient journal is now available online. All the best, Vit Sisler CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East http://www.cyberorient.net/ Vol. 6, Iss. 2, 2012 Articles Cyberactivists Paving the Way for the Arab Spring: Voices from Egypt, Tunisia and Libya Mohammed El-Nawawy and Sahar Khamis http://www.cyberorient.net/article.do?articleId=7994 The wave of Arab revolutions and uprisings that has been shaking all corners of the Arab Middle East since 2011 and that has come to be known as the Arab Spring owed a major portion of its success to online activism. The spark that ignited these revolutions in the offline world was ignited by the Arab cyberactivists’ well-coordinated campaigns, calling for the toppling of corrupt regimes in their home countries. These campaigns were launched through various forms of social media, such as blogs, Facebook, Twitter and Flicker with the goal of introducing drastic political changes and allowing for a higher margin of freedom in a region that has often been associated with autocracy and dictatorship. Three Arab countries in particular – Egypt, Tunisia and Libya – have witnessed sweeping transformations, leading to the ousting and court trials of members of their old regimes and the holding of democratic presidential and parliamentary elections. This study utilizes qualitative, on-the-field interviews with cyberactivists in these three countries to provide a unique perspective into how they have paved the way for a new era of openness and democratic reform in their respective countries. Mythical Roots, Phantasmic Realities and Transnational Migrants: Yemenis Across the Gulf of Aden Samson A. Bezabeh http://www.cyberorient.net/article.do?articleId=8043 This article analyzes the relationship between transnational migration, state-based religious cosmologies and new electronic media. It illustrates the way mythical realities and a Christian cosmology have structured the existence of the Yemeni diaspora. In analyzing the way mythical realities have been deployed, I seek to understand how old ways of creating boundaries have been redeployed in electronic landscapes. Much has been written regarding the interface between religion and media. Yet little attention has been paid to the phantasmic element that exists in digital-based transnational discourses. Drawing on the Lacanian concept of jouissance in this article, I pinpoint how mythical realities, important for creating boundaries, also operate at the phantasmic level. In doing so, I ultimately aim to show how transnational migration across borders operates within a field that is dotted with religious mythology and phantasmic realities that are increasingly expressed in the electronic landscape. I also show how the changing relationship between Muslims and Christians should be explained by taking more factors into account than concrete human reality. Explanations should also be sought in the distant past and in the domain of fantasy, which has so far proved to be uncomfortable ground for most scholars studying religious dynamics in the Horn of Africa. The Time of Concluding the Contract in E-Commerce from Islamic Legal Perspective Abdulrahman Alzaagy http://www.cyberorient.net/article.do?articleId=8029 The issue of when a contract between face-to-face parties is deemed to be concluded presents no legal difficulty to deal with in conventional dealings. However, the borderless nature of the Internet presents questions as to when a contract is deemed to be irrevocably formed and therefore raises questions regarding contract validity. As a general rule, a contract is formed when there is an exchange of offer and acceptance between the parties. However, in online contracts the contracting parties are not in face-to-face meeting and thus the exchange of offer and acceptance involves the possibility that such correspondence may not reach its intended recipient because of technical errors or other technological complexities. As a result, this article tends to engage in a critical study to determine the time when a contract formed in the cyberspace is concluded in the light of Islamic contracting principles with reference to a number of International legal frameworks. Comments Tweeting like a Pigeon: The Internet in the Arab Revolutions Miriyam Aouragh http://www.cyberorient.net/article.do?articleId=8000 The extraordinary uprisings since December 2010 represented the long-prepared transformation from fatalism to people power. The online–offline dialectic allowed the revolution to be mediated with global ramifications - from Wisconsin to Barcelona to Athens. This techno-social nexus forms a crucial element of the overall push and pull factors and this contribution reassess the "Net Worth" from a critical perspective. The fetishizing flora and fauna labels from earlier hyped political-techno events --"Cedar", "Green", or "Orange" revolutions-- that coincided with particular geo-political algorithms, were initially copied and pasted as emblematic solicitations. But whether Wikileaks or the Palestine Papers, and YouTube videos or blogs disclosing practices of torture and corruption—opinions have been shaped and decisions were mediated by online technologies. This piece demonstrates the overflow of YouTube music clips through the prism of the Tunisian revolution. I will look at these dynamics through the lens of Palestine as an informative ethnographic comparison because it helps indicate the power structure behind technology and allows me to assess the multiplicity of internet politics and argue that online activities and offline power structures do not exist in isolation and are unequally mediated. Reviews Blogistan: The Internet and Politics in Iran Zuzana Krihova http://www.cyberorient.net/article.do?articleId=7913 Sreberny and Khiabany's book Blogistan deals with various paradoxes and contradictions of Iranian policy towards the information and communication technologies (ICTs). Placing the Iranian blogosphere within the rapidly modernized telecommunication sector and looking at the democratic potentials of the Internet being suppressed by Iranian state policies, Blogistan reveals how the contradictions between the development of ICTs and its state's control as well as tension between market interests and revolutionary claims create a contradictory blogosphere in Iran. Von Chatraum bis Cyberjihad: Muslimische Internetnutzung in lokaler und globaler Perspektive Göran Larsson http://www.cyberorient.net/article.do?articleId=7922 The book titled Von Chatraum bis Cyberjihad: Muslimische Internetnutzung in lokaler und globaler Perspektive, edited by Matthias Brückner and Johanna Pink, focuses on different aspects of the Islamic and Muslim presence on the Internet. It is divided into three subsections. The first focuses on Internet use in the Islamic world, the second on trans-locality and the Internet, and the third on global Islam. -- Vit Sisler, Ph.D. Charles University in Prague Faculty of Arts & Philosophy Institute of Information Science and Librarianship New Media Studies http://uisk.jinonice.cuni.cz/sisler/
