CfP-The Non-Financial Crisis: Politics, Media, and Culture in the Present Economic Context
by Cristina Miguel 28 Jan '13

28 Jan '13

CALL FOR PAPERS Apologies for cross-posting CALL FOR PAPERS The 7th Annual PhD Conference The Institute of Communications Studies, University of Leeds THE NON-FINANCIAL CRISIS: POLITICS, MEDIA AND CULTURE IN THE PRESENT ECONOMIC CONTEXT 31 May 2013, Leeds The recent financial crisis that caused the collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments, and the struggle of national and trans-national governments in tackling the crisis, has signalled the need for fundamental changes in economic and political systems. In this conference we hope to interrogate the various aspects of the crisis. These aspects span beyond economic considerations to broader issues related to socio-political systems, media and cultural production. Almost all fields are affected by the crisis and forced to change. The changes in these fields are interdependent and will have important implications for our future. With this aim in mind we invite submissions which could address any of the following questions or investigate related issues: 1. Politics - How is the crisis changing the way leaders appeal to audiences? - How has the crisis influenced political agendas? - How have governments been dealing with the communication of the crisis? - Has the crisis brought about new forms of political action? - Is the economic crisis encouraging citizen participation? - Is it still possible for the public sphere to influence national government in times of transnational crisis? - Has the crisis in anyway influenced the legitimacy of transnational institutions? 2. Media and Journalism - How has the media represented the crisis? - What are the challenges for communicating the crisis? - Have journalistic practices changed due to the influence of the crisis? - How have the economic crisis and budget cuts influenced media production? - Have new media changed the way news is produced and distributed during crisis? - Will the media play a different role in society after the crisis? - Has new media been shrinking or expanding disparity between the North and the South during the crisis? 3. Culture - Cultural labour and value creation: what impact has the crisis had on the dynamic between creative autonomy and market imperatives? - Are the creative industries more resilient to the impact of the economic crisis than traditional manufacturing industries? - What might the implications be of public subsidy cuts for culture and the cultural labour market? - What roles can the cultural and creative industries play in promoting job creation and economic growth? - Could the cultural industries play a real and significant role in the development and adoption of new socioeconomic models? - Where does the culture industry debate lie today: what have been the effects of the commodification of culture? - What is art’s relationship to social change? Is there legitimate faith in the autonomy of art as bound to the promise of a better world to come? - What might be the outcomes of the economic crisis for European culture? Please email 250-300 word abstract, with any institutional affiliation and brief biography, to the following email address by March 1, 2013 (earlier submissions welcome): ics-pg-conference(a)leeds.ac. Literature/cases request: Obligations to know (e.g., RTFM)
by Joseph Reagle 28 Jan '13

28 Jan '13

Hello everyone, I'm interested in cultural norms and expressions of an "obligation to know." In the hacker realm this is well developed: clue (cluestick, clue-by-four), asshats, newbies (newbs), RTFM (Read the "Fine" Manual), lazyweb, etc. In minority (e.g., race, sex, gender) studies there's the notion of privilege, *-centrism, and the idea that it is not the obligation of the oppressed to have to educate the ignorant majority. In popular culture, there's "Topic 101." Can you offer any other examples? Do you know how I might trace the linguistic origins of "101"? (How and when did it first become popular?) Can you point me to any related literature? (For example, Coleman's (2012) discussion of RTFM in her recent "Coding Freedom," or Lori Kendall's (2008) "'Noobs' and 'chicks' on Animutation Portal.") If so, many thanks! -- Regards, Joseph Reagle http://reagle.org/joseph/ (Perhaps using speech recognition, sorry for any speakos.)

Re: [Air-L] Air-L NY Times story on privacy legislation
by Andy 27 Jan '13

27 Jan '13

>From what I can tell the situation seems to be that some member states are playing ball and have enforced the Cookie Directive (2009/136/EC) and others, such as the UK, have been dragging their heels. This involvesapplications of the Directives where consent does not need to be obtained upfront. Hmm! I have not read the NY Times article, but it is not all cookie-use that is affected and it is possibly here where the confusion lay. Instead whereas in the past website owners/managers had to tell users how they used cookies, and how users might opt-out if they objected, they now have to gain consent from users if they are to place cookies on a user’s machine. Exceptions to this rule are restricted to situations where the placement of cookies relates to a service explicitly requested by the user, as with the case of automatic form-filling for example. Third-party cookies, the type employed by behavioral advertising firms, are given special attention by the legislation. I wrote a paper published with NMS on this here: http://nms.sagepub.com/content/early/2012/09/24/1461444812458434.full Cheers, Andy > > > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > From: Charles Ess <charles.ess(a)gmail.com> > To: Air list <air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org> > Cc: > Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2013 10:23:18 +0100 > Subject: [Air-L] NY Times story on privacy legislation > Dear privacy wonks, > > I've just read a NY Times story reporting on U.S. business and governmental > lobbying of the European Parliament to weaken what are characterized as > current European proposals, including: > "Web businesses would be unable to perform basic collecting and profiling > of > individual computer users unless they gave their explicit consent as part > of > policies that allow them to specify what kinds of information could be > collected and for what purpose." > As I understand it, however, the requirement for such consent is already > law > under the recently amended EU ePrivacy Directive.
