31 Oct '12

Dear colleagues, A new EU COST research network on "Virtual Work" has formed: http://www.cost.eu/domains_actions/isch/Actions/IS1202 Detailed desription: http://w3.cost.eu/fileadmin/domain_files/ISCH/Action_IS1202/mou/IS1202-e.pdf It focuses on the critical study of working conditions that relate to production and productive consumption in the context of ICTs, the "digital labour" debate, the political economy of communication labour, the spatial and global division of communication labour, the global value chain of ICT production, the gender division of communication labour, communication labour and class, the sociology of knowledge work, (paid, unpaid, precarious) work in the creative and cultural industries and related topics. The network has already participants from quite some European countries. There are however a few countries that are eligible to participate, but from which we do not-yet have management committee members. These countries are: Bosnia, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Egypt, Georgia, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Montenegro, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Russia, Syria, Tunisia, Ukraine. If you live in any of these countries and are interested in the topic and in becoming a management committee member, then please contact the Action's Chair Prof. Ursula Huws, University of Hertfordshire, UK, u.huws(a)herts.ac.uk and express/explain your interest in the network. Best wishes, Christian Fuchs (Vice Chair, EU COST Action "Dynamics of Virtual Work")

*** Extended Deadline *** Nov 19 CfP: 3rd International Workshop on Model-driven Approaches for Simulation Engineering (Mod4Sim13) part of the Symposium on Theory of Modeling and Simulation SCS SpringSim 2013)
by Daniele Gianni 31 Oct '12

(Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CFP) ################################################################# CALL FOR PAPERS 3rd International Workshop on Model-driven Approaches for Simulation Engineering part of the Symposium on Theory of Modeling and Simulation (SCS SpringSim 2013) in technical cooperation with INCOSE San Diego Chapter ################################################################# April 7-10, 2013, San Diego, CA (USA) http://www.sel.uniroma2.it/Mod4Sim13 ################################################################# # Papers Due: *** November 19, 2012 *** Extended ***** # Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings # and archived in the ACM Digital Library. ################################################################# The workshop aims to bring together experts in model-based, model-driven and software engineering with experts in simulation methods and simulation practitioners, with the objective to advance the state of the art in model-driven simulation engineering. Model-driven engineering approaches provide considerable advantages to software systems engineering activities through the provision of consistent and coherent models at different abstraction levels. As these models are in a machine readable form, model-driven engineering approaches can also support the exploitation of computing capabilities for model reuse, programming code generation, and model checking, for example. The definition of a simulation model, its software implementation and its execution platform form what is known as simulation engineering. As simulation systems are mainly based on software, these systems can similarly benefit from model-driven approaches to support automatic software generation, enhance software quality, and reduce costs, development effort and time-to-market. Similarly to systems and software engineering, simulation engineering can exploit the capabilities of model-driven approaches by increasing the abstraction level in simulation model specifications and by automating the derivation of simulator code. Further advantages can be gained by using modeling languages, such as UML and SysML – but not exclusively those. For example, modeling languages can be used for descriptive modeling (to describe the system to be simulated), for analytical modeling (to specify analytically the simulation of the same system), and for implementation modeling (to define the respective simulator). A partial list of topics of interest includes: * model-driven simulation engineering processes * requirements modeling for simulation * domain specific languages for modeling and simulation * model transformations for simulation model building * model transformations for simulation model implementation * model-driven engineering of distributed simulation systems * relationship between metamodeling standards (e.g., MOF, Ecore) and distributed simulation standards (e.g., HLA, DIS) * metamodels for simulation reuse and interoperability * model-driven technologies for different simulation paradigms (discrete event simulation, multi-agent simulation, sketch-based * simulation, etc.) * model-driven methods and tools for performance engineering of simulation systems * simulation tools for model-driven software performance engineering * model-driven technologies for simulation verification and validation * model-driven technologies for data collection and analysis * model-driven technologies for simulation visualization * Executable UML * Executable Architectures * SysML / Modelica integration * Simulation Model Portability and reuse * model-based systems verification and validation * simulation for model-based systems engineering To stimulate creativity, however, the workshop maintains a wider scope and welcomes contributions offering original perspectives on model-driven engineering of simulation systems. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On-Line Submissions and Publication +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ We invite paper submissions in three forms: 1. Coding Places: Software Practice in a South American City (MIT Press, 2012)
by Yuri Takhteyev 31 Oct '12

31 Oct '12

This new book, published this month by the MIT Press, may be of interest to the AoIR community as it looks ethnographically at the use of the internet in the context of modern high tech work in Brazil. Please see the announcement below. If anyone has any questions about the book, I would be happy to answer! - yuri Coding Places: Software Practice in a South American City Yuri Takhteyev The MIT Press, 2012 http://codingplaces.net/ Software development would seem to be a quintessential example of today’s Internet-enabled “knowledge work”—a global profession not bound by the constraints of geography. In “Coding Places,” Yuri Takhteyev looks at the work of software developers who inhabit two contexts: a geographical area—in this case, greater Rio de Janeiro—and a “world of practice,” a global system of activities linked by shared meanings and joint practice. The work of the Brazilian developers, Takhteyev discovers, reveals a paradox of the world of software: it is both diffuse and sharply centralized. The world of software revolves around a handful of places—in particular, the San Francisco Bay area—that exercise substantial control over both the material and cultural elements of software production. Takhteyev shows how in this context Brazilian software developers work to find their place in the world of software and to bring its benefits to their city. Takhteyev’s study closely examines Lua, an open source programming language developed in Rio but used in such internationally popular products as World of Warcraft and Angry Birds. He shows that Lua had to be separated from its local origins on the periphery in order to achieve success abroad. The developers, Portuguese speakers, used English in much of their work on Lua. By bringing to light the work that peripheral practitioners must do to give software its seeming universality, Takhteyev offers a revealing perspective on the not-so-flat world of globalization. Endorsements: “By examining software development in the ‘wrong place’ of Rio de Janeiro, Yuri Takhteyev shows us with vivid accounts and clear narrative how individuals who work far from the geographic hubs of their field create local connections and shape local environments even as they embrace global culture and pursue global dreams for themselves and their locations. The concept of a ‘wrong place’ proves an immediately beguiling and completely original approach for understanding work in the global setting; Takhteyev’s choice of Rio, in particular, is nothing short of brilliant.” - Diane Bailey, School of Information, University of Texas at Austin “Coding Places opens the black box of ‘globalization’ to show us the pieces involved in that process—people, technical objects, government agencies, universities, businesses—in intimate detail: how they work, what they need to survive, what they furnish to others, the network of their connections, conflicts, and accommodations. We see the whole machine in operation: how the many possible inputs generate a variety of outputs, technically and organizationally. And we learn a way of thinking that we can apply to the arts, science, or business, to any kind of activity with worldwide extension and ramifications. It does all this with a depth of vision and a clarity in telling the story seldom found in the social sciences.” - Howard S. Becker, author of “Outsiders” and “Art Worlds” “Software development is no longer limited geographically but is expanding to different regions of the world. Yuri Takhteyev has produced an insightful work that provides a critical account of software developers and their role in the global knowledge economy. This is a fascinating story of knowledge workers in a region that has the potential to become the next Silicon Valley.” - Alladi Venkatesh, Professor and Associate Director, Center for Research on Information Technology, University of California, Irvine

by Rodrigo Davies 30 Oct '12

30 Oct '12

Hello, I'm working on a guide to designing Audio User Interfaces, particularly those used for web platforms (e.g. blogging platforms powered by voice calls), and wondered if people on-list could suggest any good case studies / literature in this area? I'm aware of some work done by IBM in India, but would love to hear other examples. Thanks Rodrigo -- Rodrigo Davies Research Assistant, MIT Center for Civic Media M.S. Looking for MA or Ph.D. online program in Canada in ethics or privacy security or sociology legal studies
by Peter Timusk 30 Oct '12

30 Oct '12

Any suggestions and or advice welcome. I was talking to an AoIR professor Matthew Allen in Australia about completing a Ph.D. online in policy legal computer ethics questions, yet the costs for a foreign student stopped me. I know Queens at Kingston Ontario do research in privacy but they are about a two hour train ride away. I would hope to do the bulk of the work online with a Canadian school, so I can afford it. I have strong quantitative modeling skills and a background in reading many AoIR scholars and also more law cases in everything information age from hacking to domain name disputes to more interdisciplinary legal online issues. I have a high honours BA in legal studies and a general B.Math in statistics and work professionally managing national business statistics projects. I also have a few deep involvements in a variety of community based volunteer services such as in consumers of psychiatry and peer support and service provision to victims of crime and tragic circumstances. I can arrange for some time away from work if needed. I have also completed course work for a certificate in systems sciences from the University of Ottawa in an MSc program but did not finish the thesis.
