New Book: Digital Anthropology
by Heather Horst 29 Oct '12

29 Oct '12

Dear AoIR, It was great to see many of you at IR13 in Salford. For those who weren't able to make it, we wanted to let you know that our new edited volume, Digital Anthropology, is now out. We have a fantastic group of contributors - Bart Barendregt, Tom Boellstorff, Stefana Broadbent, Lane DeNicola, Adam Drazin, Haidy Geismar, Faye Ginsburg, Heather Horst, Jelena Karanovic, Thomas Malaby, Danny Miller, John Postill & Jo Tacchi - and a broad range of topics that we think will be of interest to members of the AoIR community. Details about the book are included below. Heather and Danny *Digital Anthropology* Heather A. Horst<http://www.bergpublishers.com/?tabid=3213&st=advanced&author=Heather%20A.%2…> and Daniel Miller<http://www.bergpublishers.com/?tabid=3213&st=advanced&author=Daniel%20Miller>, Editors Oct 2012, 328pp, 9 bw illus, 9780857852908 http://www.bergpublishers.com/?TabId=15894 (also available as an e-book) Anthropology has two main tasks: to understand what it is to be human and to examine how humanity is manifested differently in the diversity of culture. These tasks have gained new impetus from the extraordinary rise of the digital. This book brings together several key anthropologists working with digital culture to demonstrate just how productive an anthropological approach to the digital has already become. Through a range of case studies from Facebook to Second Life to Google Earth, Digital Anthropology explores how human and digital can be defined in relation to one another, from avatars and disability; cultural differences in how we use social networking sites or practise religion; the practical consequences of the digital for politics, museums, design, space and development to new online world and gaming communities. The book also explores the moral universe of the digital, from new anxieties to open-source ideals. Digital Anthropology reveals how only the intense scrutiny of ethnography can overturn assumptions about the impact of digital culture and reveal its profound consequences for everyday life. Combining the clarity of a textbook with an engaging style which conveys a passion for these new frontiers of enquiry, this book is essential reading for students and scholars of anthropology, media studies, communication studies, cultural studies and sociology. *Reviews of Digital Anthropology* “Digital Anthropology is a beautifully curated book that reveals the importance of anthropological insight for understanding different aspects of networked society, from the spectacular to the mundane. In this formative book, Horst and Miller call attention to the ways in which digital technologies make visible our humanity.” danah boyd, Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research “This remarkable volume provides a provocative survey of an emergent territory we are all coming to inhabit. Broad in coverage yet acutely attentive to the particulars, offering multiple perspectives yet elegantly integrative, and epistemologically bracing while deeply anthropological, this is a work of lasting value for experts and non-experts alike.” Don Brenneis, Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Santa Cruz “Researchers and teachers alike have long been waiting for this invaluable guide to the tricky terrain of digital anthropology. Demonstrating what anthropology brings to the study of the digital and vice versa, Horst and Miller's book provides a firm launching-off point for new investigations of the remediations, remodulations, and reconfigurations associated with digital media and technology.” Paul Dourish, Professor of Informatics, University of California, Irvine *Contents* *Section A: Introduction* The Digital and The Human - Daniel Miller (University College London, UK) and Heather A. Dear AIR-Community, We are developing a social media analysis tool at the Media Change and Innovation Division at IPMZ of University of Zurich. This tool is designed to collect and analyze social media data from various sources. At the moment, we are able to collect data from Twitter, Facebook, Google+ YouTube and Blogger.com. It present, the application is able to collect text from the above-listed sources and enables users to save the collected text in txt format for further analysis. Additionally, we have integrated different text analysis tools. Hence, the user of the application is able to automatically examine the text and, thereby, detect positive, negative and neutral sentiments, find words closely associated with different emotional states such as affect, anger, fear anxiety, etc. Also, we have integrated word cloud which displays the most frequently used words in the text and sorts them according to their importance. Furthermore, we provide different buzz statistics from all the sources listed above. All this is available only in the beta version and additional features are added on a weekly basis. We would like to offer you a two months' trial access which is limited to 20 users. If you are interested, please contact me directly. Access will be granted on a first come, first served basis. In exchange for the trial, we welcome your comments and suggestions for further improvement of the application. Best regards, Sulkhan Sulkhan Metreveli, Dr. Des. CFP: An Education in Facebook (Edited collection, abstracts due 19 Jan 2013)
by Tama Leaver 29 Oct '12

29 Oct '12

An Education in Facebook? Higher Education and the World’s Largest Social Network Editors: Dr Mike Kent, Dr Tama Leaver and Dr Clare Lloyd, Internet Studies, Curtin University Abstract Submission Deadline 18 January 2013 Full Chapters Due 31 May 2013 We are soliciting chapter proposals for an edited collection entitled *An Education in Facebook?* This edited collection will focus on the relationship between Facebook and Higher Education. Facebook first emerged in 2004 as a social network for students studying at universities in the United States. It soon grew beyond North America, and beyond the confines of student networking. Having evolved initially as a student social space the platform continues to play a prominent role in the lives of many students and staff at higher education institutions. The collection will explore the use of Facebook the higher education environment as both a social space, and also its growing use as part of teaching and learning processes, both formally and informally. From students creating informal social groups around a course of study or particular unit, and dedicated online study groups, to the use of Facebook as a formal venue for teaching, we are seeking chapters that explore these and related areas. Is there an appropriate place for Facebook in formal higher education? What are the tensions between private and professional spaces online for students and teachers and what are the potential dangers of unintentional overlap? What are appropriate roles and responsibilities for staff, students and institutions in relation to the social network? What are the dangers of moving important aspects of the higher education learning environment to an external company that exploits social interaction for profit? How is the shift to online learning in many institutions complemented or challenged by mobile uses of social networks, including app use on smartphones and tablets? This book will explore these and other topics interrogating the contemporary role of Facebook in Higher Education. Some suggested topics (which are by no means exhaustive): · Facebook and/as/or Learning Management Systems? · Facebook as support network (for online and overseas learners, for example) · Teacher-led Facebook uses as in/formal learning · Student-led Facebook uses as in/formal learning · Case studies of Facebook implementation in formal learning · Informal versus formal learning online · Social networks and the flipped classroom · Context collapse · Privacy issues in social network use · Copyright issues in social network use · Mobile learning · The Facebook App in education · Roles and boundaries in networked learning · Facebook as a backchannel (either positive or disruptive) · The politics of ‘friending’ in staff and student relations · Examples of innovative Facebook integration in higher education · Whether Facebook has a place in formal education · MOOCs and Facebook · Comparative uses of Facebook and other online networks (eg Twitter) Submission procedure: Potential authors are invited to submit chapter abstract of no more than 500 words, including a title, 4 to 6 keywords, and a brief bio, by email to both Dr Mike Kent <m.kent(a)curtin.edu.au> and Dr Tama Leaver < t.leaver(a)curtin.edu.au> by 18 January 2013. (Please indicate in your proposal if you wish to use any visual material, and how you have or will gain copyright clearance for visual material.) Authors will receive a response by February 15, 2013, with those provisionally accepted due as chapters of no more than 6000 words (including references) by 31 May 2013. About the editors: The three editors are from the Department of Internet Studies at Curtin University. Dr Mike Kent’s research focus is on people with disabilities and their use of, and access to, information technology and the Internet. He recently co-authored the monograph *Disability and New Media*(Routledge, 2011). His other area a research interest is in higher education and particularly online education. Dr Tama Leaver researches online identities, digital media distribution and networked learning. He previously spent several years as a lecturer in Higher Education Development, and is currently also a Research Fellow in Curtin’s Centre for Culture and Technology. His recent book is *Artificial Culture: Identity, Technology and Bodies* (Routledge, 2012), and he is currently co-authoring a monograph entitled *Web Presence: Staying Noticed in a Networked World*. Dr Clare Lloyd specialises in mobile communication and mobile media. Her recent publications include the co-authored papers ‘Consuming apps: the Australian woman’s slow appetite for apps’ (2012); and ‘Fun and useful apps: female identity construction and social connectedness using the mobile phone’ apps’ (2012).**

CALL FOR PAPERS: 10 Years On: Looking Forwards in Mobile ICT Research - ICA PreConference June 2013
by j.vincent＠surrey.ac.uk 28 Oct '12

28 Oct '12

cfp ICA CAT PreConf 10 years on:looking forwards in mobile ICT research16_17 June LSE London. deadline16Nov https://www.icahdq.org/conf/2013/10yearson.asp Dear Colleagues, Please do tweet the above and/or forward the long version below. We look forward to hearing from you, best wishes Jane Vincent and Leslie Haddon 10 years on: looking forwards in mobile ICT research ICA Communications and Technology Division Mobile Communications 10th Anniversary Pre-Conference Workshop https://www.icahdq.org/conf/2013/10yearson.asp 16th and 17th June 2013 London School of Economics and Political Science Media and Communications Department Lead Organisers: Leslie Haddon (Senior Researcher LSE) Jane Vincent (Visiting Fellow University of Surrey Digital World Research Centre) We are pleased to invite papers for the Mobile Communications ICA Pre-Conference Workshop. In celebration of its 10th Anniversary Year we also announce the introduction of an Award for the Best Paper. We look forward to receiving your submissions and to welcoming you in London in June 2013! Aims of the Pre-Conference Workshop This Workshop aims to understand more about the implications of the fast moving mobile world both on the social practices of the users of mobile ICTs as well as, and following the main ICA conference theme, on the ability of researchers to deliver reliable and effective research material. This 10th Mobile Communications ICA pre-conference provides a chance to take stock, reflect on and look forward to developments in research in this field over the forthcoming years. This will include discussing the general expectations and aspirations of an invited panel of experts and exploring the future research implications of contemporary studies to be reported at the conference. Workshop Topics Mobile communications are by no means new when we think in terms of walkie-talkies or car telephones but the hand held digital voice and data mobile communications that now populate our always on connected lives have only become omnipresent in the last five years. Ten years ago, when the first ICA Mobile Communications Pre-Conference Workshop was held, Twitter was unheard of, wifi virtually non-existent and mobile phone subscriptions a fifth of their present day numbers. Nowadays mobile ICTs are no longer merely mobile phones nor do they just involve communication between people. Instead mobile devices like smartphones, tablets or laptops use many convergent technologies (3G, 4G, Wifi, Television etc). How can this experience of, and exponential global growth in, mobile ICTs inform our ideas about the future? We anticipate many diverse topics which will be linked through the common thread of looking forwards in mobile communications perhaps also providing material that may help set a future research agenda. We welcome abstracts that relate to the following broad areas of mobile ICT research -Cultural differences -Gender -Children -Elderly -Mobile media -Migration -Social Media This range is in part designed to produce a broad overview, but other more specific areas will be considered. For example, contemporary studies are already identifying challenges in achieving consistency, reliability and quality of results in a fast moving world of Big Data, petabytes and change. New research has already highlighted the effects of people on the move around the globe – migration within and between nations; as well as emotions, affect and sentiment with regard to using mobile devices. Best Paper Award An Award for the best paper will be given at this event; only full papers submitted by the entry date can be included for consideration for this award. Programme Outline Commencing 9am Sunday morning 16 June 2013 and concluding at 1pm 17th June, this one and a half day event will consist of expert panel presentations and reflections, and strands for the presentation of papers. There is an upper limit of 46 papers, and a limit of 70 delegates. Poster sessions may be an option if there is high demand. More details of the programme and social events including a dinner on Sunday night will be released as they are confirmed Venue and Cost The event is hosted by The London School of Economics and Political Science Media and Communications Department. The cost will be £70 per person inclusive of lunch Sunday and coffee/tea Sunday and Monday morning. Map link http://www2.lse.ac.uk/mapsAndDirections/howToGetToLSE.aspx The LSE is the world’s leading social science institution for teaching and research, with an academic profile spanning a wide range of disciplines. Teaching and research are conducted through 18 departments and 26 research centres and institutes, with students drawn from more than 130 countries worldwide. Paper Submission Process Contributions are invited from scholars from multiple disciplines studying mobile ICTs and at all stages of their career. In keeping with the pre-conference theme, those submitting abstracts should write something about the broader implications, issues, trends, future research, etc. that can be derived from the particular empirical study or the topic they focused upon. This will also help to seek further publication of any papers. Although the papers may well cover diverse topics this will ensure they have a common thread of implications for communications research. Abstracts 250 – 500 words to be sent to j.vincent(a)surrey.ac.uk Please use ICA Mobile Communications cfp Abstract Submission as email subject and include a 50 word max biography Abstract Deadline 16 November 2012 Confirmation of acceptance by 4 January 2012 Only Full Papers (max 8000 words) submitted by 31 March 2013 will be considered for the Best Paper Award.
