CFP “Small Data” in a “Big Data” World - International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (ICQI)
by Lois Scheidt 23 Oct '12

CFP “Small Data” in a “Big Data” World, Panel at International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (ICQI) 2013 to be held May 15-18, 2013 on the campus of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign IL. Recently the academic research world has been flooded with discussion of the uses and implications of “Big Data.” For those of us whose research focuses on digital environments this discussion includes conferences, grants, special publications, and job announcements that focus on Big Data and the computational turn in social science and humanities research. ‘Big Data’ is not necessarily defined by the size of the data set, for humanities scholars have long been interested in huge textual and image-based corpora. Instead, ‘Big Data’ refers to the increasing complexity of relationships between data objects in a given set, often requiring large-scale computational and algorithmic resources for analysis. ‘Small Data’ research, on the other hand, often begins with a theoretical (e.g., critical race theory) or methodological (e.g., case study or ethnography) approach, which is then applied to digital data drawn from less-popular websites, YouTube videos, or even individual blog posts and comments. Unfortunately, the tools used to analyze Big Data seem to be influencing modes of thought about new media and digital research away from the theoretical and towards the scientistic. For example, in a recent article Bruns and Burgess (2012) argue that humanist, interpretive studies of social media are ‘ideosyncratic, non-repeatable, and non-verifiable’. Although Bruns and Burgess concede that there is space for ‘traditional qualitative methods’, their suggestion is that these methods need to be ‘integrated and innovated’ upon in a ‘big data’ context. Given the increasing amounts of attention (e.g., external funding, public policy, or student interest) ‘big data’ is accruing, where does this leave Small Data research and researchers? This panel seeks to explore the position of Small Data in relation to the discussion and/or use of Big Data. As the definition of Big Data is still in flux we are using Bruns & Burgess (2012) to ground our individual presentation. We are seeking presentations that will explore a variety of views on this turn toward Big Data and the impact on the researched, the researcher, and academia. References: Bruns, A., & Burgess, J. Please circulate widely – apologies for duplicate postings Call for Papers: HASTAC 2013 — The Decennial The Storm of Progress: New Horizons, New Narratives, New Codes April 25-28, 2013 York University, Toronto, Canada Submissions Deadline: November 15, 2012 www.hastac2013.org This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe that keeps piling ruin upon ruin and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress. – Walter Benjamin What’s next? 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of HASTAC’s (Humanities, Arts, Science Advanced Collaboratory's) founding. In that spirit we invite work that is either reflective or prescient, that evaluates our history and seeks to construct our future(s). We invite you to take this opportunity to look back, theorize and archive. We invite you to engage in the creative, if impossible, attempt to glimpse the digital future. We challenge you to shape it. We invite you to share how you, your team, your research lab, your classroom, or your students are building the technologies and subjects of the future right now or imagining new horizons of possibility for the ways in which we will make, teach, learn and find community in the coming decade(s). – HASTAC histories – historical roots of current practices; cautionary tales – libraries and preservation in 2023; digital traces and archives – new publics, movements going global and communities of the future – manifestos for the next generation – new stories for new screens: e-literatures, immersive/augmented worlds, future cinema, games – ways of working – methodologies, code, communities, funding – future classrooms, curricula, and pedagogies – maker movements; — tools we haven’t built yet, but that we desperately need – visualization and data-driven futures – mobility, future city spaces, built and liquid architectures – crowdsourcing (and/in) the future – teleologies and their discontents – new and imagined creative practices HASTAC 2013 will be composed of keynote addresses, structured conversations, a curated exhibition, participant presentations, performances and tech demos, spontaneous disruptions, and a Scholars’ Space. We will accept proposals for participant presentations in the following categories: 5-8 minute lightning talks; 15-20 minute talks; curated panels (lightning talks, longer talks, curated conversation); project demos; digital and/or print posters; creative performances; post conference workshops (April 28th). Submission portal will be open soon. We are now accepting proposals for participant presentations in the following categories: 5-8 Minute Lightning Talks. We seek focused, inspiring talks that can serve as both provocation and an introduction to your work in progress or your wider interests. We require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a half-page abstract of the work you would like to present that must discuss its relationship to the conference theme; 3) any technical requirements or other support that may be required for you presentation. 15-20 Minute Talks. We also seek more traditional papers that really require more time to develop a sustained argument than a lightning talk would allow. Please let us know in your submission if you would allow us to simultaneously consider your presentation submission for a lighting talk instead of a full talk. We require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a one-page abstract of the work you would like to present that must discuss its relationship to the conference theme; 3) any technical requirements or other support that may be required for your presentation. Curated Panels. If you would like to curate a panel of 3- 5 lightning talks, a traditional panel of 3 papers or a conduct structured conversation among key thinkers, we require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any, for all participants; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio for all participants; 3) a one-page abstract of the panel’s theme that must discuss its relationship to the larger conference theme, clearly identifying how each panelist will contribute; 4) identification of the panel/group organizer who will be required to facilitate the panel/group involvement; 5) any technical requirements or other support that may be required for the presentation. Project Demos. Designed to showcase well-developed digital projects or tools. Demos will be grouped in a single room and will, ideally, remain up for an entire conference day. You will have a dedicated 2 hour slot to engage with conference participants without competing with other events. You will have wireless access and a table. While we endeavor to provide projectors or other equipment for participants who make a request at the time of submission, presenters will be responsible for bringing all required technology with them. We require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a half-page abstract of the work you would like to present and a link to a project url with images or video documentation; 3) any technical requirements or other support (including any space requirements beyond a table) that may be required for the presentation. Please indicate any equipment that is absolutely required and that you cannot bring with you. In the event that we cannot guarantee access to the equipment, we regret that we may not be able to accept your demo. Digital and/or Print Posters. Print posters (4 x 3’) and electronic posters (to be projected) are solicited for emerging projects, ideas, and scholars. In presenting your research with a poster, you should aim to use the poster as a means for generating active discussion of your research. Limit the text to about one-fourth of the poster space, and use visuals (graphs, photographs, schematics, maps, etc.) to tell your story. Required: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a half-page abstract of your work that must discuss its relationship to the conference theme; 4) statement clearly identifying whether your poster will be hard-copy or digitally projected; 5) a digital draft of your poster. Creative Performances. We are soliciting creative interventions, too – e-lit readings, ARGs and mobile cinema, talks that cross boundaries between the academic and the poetic, tech wearables, etc.. We see these as being integrated into conference sessions (ie if you have a five minute piece, we might schedule it as a lighting talk), as potentially being part of scheduled evening entertainment (a 30 minute interactive dance performance or epoetry reading), or as taking place outside of/alongside scheduled time (ie a mobile game that conference participants can download). 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a one-page abstract of the work you would like to present that clearly identifies the genre your are working in and how, ideally, you would like it to be scheduled during the conference (including time and space requirements). Your abstract must discuss its relationship to the conference theme; 3) any technical requirements or other support (including any space requirements). Please indicate any equipment that is absolutely required and that you cannot bring with you. In the event that we cannot guarantee access to the equipment, we regret that we may not be able to accept your creative submission. Post-conference Workshops to take place April 28th. Full day or half day workshops will be considered. If you have new tools, new approaches or seek a new community of collaborators we can provide an opportunity for you to offer full and half workshops. For consideration we require: 1) complete contact information including valid phone, e-mail, and institutional affiliation, if any; 2) brief (200-250 word) bio; 3) a one or two page abstract of the workshop that clearly describes the goals of the workshop, its relationship to the conference theme; its target audience (and any specialized background required for participation) and whether the proposal is for a full day or half-day workshop; 3) a brief explanation of the space and technical resources required to run the workshop. All proposals will be reviewed, but we regret that we cannot provide reviewer feedback. We welcome applications from scholars at all stages of their careers from all disciplines and fields, from private sector companies and public sector organizations, from artists and public intellectuals, and from you. [ICA PANEL] Downsizing Data: Analyzing Social Digital Traces [CFP]
by Alex Leavitt 23 Oct '12

23 Oct '12

Hi fellow AoIRists, Hope everyone had fun at IR13! As you all know, the ICA deadline is quickly approaching, and I'm looking for a final panelist for a group looking at (qualitative or quantitative) social science questions using social media data with a combination of computational and social scientific methods. The panel is tentatively titled "Downsizing Data: Analyzing Social Digital Traces," to emphasize narrowing social media's big data issues into specific samples and particular questions. Our current panelists are looking at qualitative research questions present in information sharing on Twitter, networks and identity on Tumblr, and social behaviors reflected in data on Foursquare. We're looking for someone who is working on another platform different from these (or potentially a cross-platform project). Again, we're aiming for someone who can speak to using computational methods (for data collection or analysis) in the analysis of social science questions (whether qualitative or quantitative). If you're interested, please send along a quick and informal 100-word abstract-spiel to this email address (aleavitt(a)usc.edu) about your proposed paper by 5:00pm EST on Friday October 26th. Any questions -- send 'em along. Thanks! Alex --- Alexander Leavitt PhD Student USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism http://alexleavitt.com Twitter: @alexleavitt

Call for Papers/Appel à contribution: Canadian Journal of Communication - Special Issue: Bridging Communication and Science and Technology Studies (STS)/Au croisement des études en communication et en science, technologie, société (STS)
by Daniel Paré 23 Oct '12

23 Oct '12

Un message en français suit ci-dessous Canadian Journal of Communication – Special Issue Call for Papers: Bridging Communication and Science and Technology Studies (STS) Guest Editors: Daniel J. Paré, Department of Communication, School of Information Studies, and Institute for Science, Society and Policy (ISSP), University of Ottawa Florence Millerand, Department of Social and Public Communication, University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM), Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie (CIRST), Lorna Heaton, Department of Communication, University of Montreal, Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie (CIRST) In recent years, there has been a notable cross-fertilization of ideas from the fields of communication studies and science and technology studies (STS). Researchers from both domains are increasingly seeking to better understand various facets of the relationship between communication and sociotechnical infrastructures. For example, growing numbers of communication researchers have been employing conceptual tools and methods offered by STS to assist in understanding the sociotechnical character and situatedness of media and information technologies and their configurations. Likewise, in organizational communication, STS concepts have brought attention to the ways in which artifacts influence organizational life. At the same time, more and more STS researchers are drawing upon various facets of critical inquiry provided by communication studies as they examine phenomena that weave together the material and symbolic. For instance a range of conceptual tools from communication studies pertaining to the analysis of audio, textual, and visual objects have been used to examine mediated practices such as the informatization of the body, the role of images in popular representations of science, and the role of rhetoric in the development and introduction of new technologies. Focus of the Special Issue This special issue aims to contribute to the growing dialogue between communication studies and STS by investigating complementarities and divergences between the two fields. In particular, we are interested in exploring the historical evolution of both fields, points of intersection (e.g. conceptual, methodological, theoretical), and articulations of explicit bridges between communication studies and STS. Authors are invited to submit original conceptual or empirically grounded papers, addressing topics such as those listed below in a variety of contexts (e.g. digital media, environment, health, organization, transitioning economies): ➢ Collaboration and participation ➢ Design, production, and consumption ➢ Ethics and Morality ➢ Gender ➢ Identities ➢ Infrastructure ➢ Innovation ➢ Knowledge and expertise ➢ Mobilities and migration ➢ Politics, policy and regulation ➢ Risk ➢ Social Justice ➢ Space ➢ Surveillance The above topics are merely indicative and this special issue will welcome papers discussing other themes relevant to understanding the intersections between communication studies and STS. We invite submissions of papers (7000-9000 words in length) in English or in French. For information about the Canadian Journal of Communication and for the submission guidelines please visit http://www.cjc-online.ca/submissions.php. Papers should be submitted electronically to the guest editors at the email addresses provided below. Daniel J. Paré: dpar2(a)uottawa.ca Florence Millerand: millerand.florence(a)uqam.ca Lorna Heaton: lorna.heaton(a)umontreal.ca Prospective authors are encouraged to contact the guest editors for any enquires about the special issue. Important Dates The deadline for submission of papers is: Friday March 15, 2013.

Forwarding this for my colleagues, please direct queries to the guest editors listed below... ******* Call for Papers: Special Issue of Media, Culture and Society (MCS) 'Social Media-Social Memory. Remembering in digitally networked times' Guest editors: Christian Pentzold (Chemnitz University of Technology / Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet & Society, Berlin) Christine Lohmeier (University of Munich) Media, Culture & Society editors: Emily Keightley (Loughborough University) Philip Schlesinger (University of Glasgow) Media and memory are often closely intertwined. From the very start of human culture, media have been employed to fix, share and store expressions and impressions of individual and collective experiences. Taking this continuing twin relation as its point of departure, this special issue seeks to showcase empirical research that studies the interplay of contemporary media, social change and acts and artifacts of memory. The editors are seeking contributions that investigate commemoration, remembrance and memory work as an essential thread in the social and material patterns of modern culture. We are especially interested in empirically grounded submissions that address, but are not limited to, the following questions: - What can we learn about the interplay of individual and collective memory and the affordances of a media ecology that is more and more digitally networked and increasingly mobile and locative? - How may we conceptualize and investigate memory taking account of the dynamics of digitisation, networking and mediatization? - Which methods and approaches are most appropriate for the study of memory work and digital and connective media? - How are memories materially and semiotically mediated? - How does memory travel? How can we conceptualise and study memory work in quotidian mobilities as well as in a range of contexts such as transcultural/transnational western and non-western movements, post-colonial contexts, diasporas and the general flows of peoples, goods and ideas? - What are the dynamics of (counter-)hegemonic discourses of memory in current mediascapes? - What can we learn about how mediated memories are realised in respect of power, class, ethnicity, religion and gender? Please submit an 800 word abstract and a 100 word biographical note to both guest editors, Christian Pentzold and Christine Lohmeier, as an e-mail attachment (.rtf, .doc, .pdf) no later than 16 November, 2012. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by the end of November 2012. Manuscripts should be no more than 8,000 words, including notes and references, be in conformity with Media, Culture & Society style guidelines and should be submitted by 1 May, 2013. For specific manuscript submission guidelines, please go to: http://mcs.sagepub.com/ Important dates Deadline for abstracts 16 November 2012 Full paper submission 1 May 2013 Revised paper submission 31 August 2013 Issue publication Summer 2014 If you have any queries, please contact the guest editors: Christian Pentzold, Chemnitz University of Technology / Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet & Society, Berlin, christian.pentzold(a)phil.tu-chemnitz.de Christine Lohmeier, University of Munich, christine.lohmeier(a)yahoo.co.uk ****

Call for abstracts - ICA Preconference: Exploring and Remaking Critical Studies of Advertising (due 30 Nov) http://bit.ly/VzWc9o Please consider this in light of your own research. Also, we'd appreciate it if you passed it along to others who may be interested. [CALL FOR ABSTRACTS] International Communication Association Preconference: "Exploring and Remaking Critical Studies of Advertising" ------------------------------- London Metropole 17 June 2013 9.00-16.00 ------------------------------- ORGANIZERS: James F. Hamilton (Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Univ. of Georgia) Robert Bodle (Communication and New Media Studies, College of Mount St. Joseph) This preconference seeks to assess and reformulate approaches to the critical study of advertising in society. Many established approaches are premised upon highly centralized, professionalized and routinized advertising and media systems. Current practices emerging from digitization and a host of social, political, economic and cultural developments arguably outstrip the reach of traditional modes of critique. This program probes the historicity of traditional critiques of advertising, and explores approaches with a better fit to current historical conditions. The purposes of this preconference program are to: 1. Present and discuss constitutive relationships between traditional critiques of advertising and the contexts of their emergence; 2. Probe, discuss and evaluate recent and emergent theoretical resources for more historically responsive bases of a critical assessment of advertising in society; 3. Track, explain, and characterize changes in the advertising ecosystem (including changing role of media planners, buyers, third-party ad networks, data-mining companies, and online intermediaries; 4. Identify potential social and political implications due to changes in the advertising industry; 5. Explore and assess new or neglected critical approaches to advertising. We welcome abstracts of original research from established scholars as well as from those whose work is in its early stages that engages this problematic. DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF ABSTRACTS: Friday, 30 November 2012. For more information about this preconference: http://bit.ly/VzWc9o To submit an abstract for review: http://bit.ly/UQzKZ9 Robert Bodle, PhD Associate Professor of Communication and New Media Studies College of Mount St. Joseph http://robertbodle.org/

+ New Book: Tweets and the Streets: Social Media and Contemporary Activism +
by Gerbaudo, Paolo 23 Oct '12

23 Oct '12

Dear list members, My new book entitled Tweets and the Streets might be of interest for some of you, especially those working on the new media/activism nexus or social networking. You find a full description of the book below. Tweets and the Streets is based on an ethnographic research conducted with movement activists in Egypt, Spain and the US and it focuses on the use of social media as a means of mobilisation. I have conducted 80 in-depth interviews and analysis of social media messages, as well as observations of protest events in these 3 countries. Among the main findings of the book are 1) the chiefly emotional rather than tactical use of social media to create shared identities and affective motivations among participants, rather than to coordinate "combat operations" 2) the use of social media as means not to sustain a "cyberspace" independent from geographic reality, but rather to organise physical gatherings in public space, and sustain a new experience of public space 3) the nature of social media activists in these movements as a diffuse and reluctant leadership, involved in choreographing the action of social movements, in setting the general scene for people's participation. Below you find the promotional blurb of the book. Do get in contact with me if you want to know more about the book and about my current research! Best, Paolo Gerbaudo ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paolo Gerbaudo TWEETS AND THE STREETS: SOCIAL MEDIA AND CONTEMPORARY ACTIVISM London: Pluto Press, 2012 http://www.plutobooks.com/display.asp?K=9780745332482 Tweets and the Streets analyses the culture of the new protest movements of the 21st century. From the Arab Spring to the "indignados" protests in Spain and the Occupy movement, Paolo Gerbaudo examines the relationship between the rise of social media and the emergence of new forms of protest. Drawing on an extensive ethnographic research, comprising 80 in-depth interviews, observations of protest events and textual analysis of social media messages, the book unveils the narratives and identities involved in the grassroots appropriation of corporate platforms like Facebook and Twitter as means of organisation and mobilisation. Gerbaudo argues that activists' use of Twitter and Facebook does not fit with the image of a "cyberspace" detached from physical reality. Instead, social media are used as part of a project of re-appropriation of public space and are turned by protest organises into means to 'choreograph' the assembling of individualised constituencies around "occupied" places such as Cairo's Tahrir Square or New York's Zuccotti Park. An exciting and invigorating journey through the new politics of dissent, Tweets and the Streets points both to the creative possibilities and to the risks of political evanescence which social media brings to the contemporary protest experience. // Contents Introduction 1. Friendly Reunions: Social Media and the Choreography of Assembly 2. 'We are not guys of comment and like': the Revolutionary Coalescence of Shabab-al-Facebook 3. Managing Digital Identities/Commnicating Digital Identities
by Franklin Nii Amankwah Yartey 23 Oct '12

23 Oct '12

Hi Everyone: I am teaching an undergraduate class this Spring on Managing Digital Identities, and I will be very grateful if anyone can point me to resources such as textbooks and journal articles that will be useful for a 100 level undergraduate class. Below is a short description of the class: "Communicating Digital Identities (COM108, also known as “Managing Digital Identities) introduces students to how identity is performed on the personal, relational and social levels in modern electronic forums. Students will analyze the impact of identity construction and management on the relationship between communicators and culture, and evaluate ethical communicative choices specific to digital contexts. Students will apply the above concepts to their own performances of identity in a variety of mediated environments." Thank you! Franklin Nii Yartey University of Dubuque, Iowa
