Comparative literature on bulletin board systems (BBS)
by Frances Shaw 25 Oct '12

25 Oct '12

Hi everyone, I'm currently working with Gerard Goggin at the University of Sydney on a study of Bulletin Board Systems and their place in the cultural history of the Australian internet. The study will include oral histories by former (and current) participants in BBS. However we're hoping to include some comparative data and analysis on BBS use in other countries, particularly in Asia. This would include analyses of how BBS are understood in broader culture and media, as well as ethnographic studies and oral histories of BBS use. We're particularly interested in research on BBS from China, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, but other studies would also be very welcome and useful! If anyone has any suggestions of literature on BBS, please let me know. Older research (from the 1980s on) would also be very useful. Thanks in advance,

Teaching privacy
by Gerardo Sánchez 25 Oct '12

25 Oct '12

Dear AoIRists Sorry for cross postings. I'm Gerardo Sánchez, research assistant at the International Computer Science institute in Berkeley California. As a part of a new project we are launching this fall regarding innovative teaching privacy strategies for K-12 scholars, a group of collaborators and I (Blanca Gordo, Gerald Friedland, Dan Garcia, et al) are developing new techniques for teaching privacy issues over the network society. In this regard, I would like to receive some feedback and recommendations from the community on relevant literature and multimedia material if there is something like relevant literary narratives or fables for raising awareness to kids or the public over their posting practices and their online behavior. I would appreciate your valuable insights Best Regards Gerardo Sánchez Research Assistant International Computer Science Institute

Suggestions/interest for a Mark Poster memorial panel for IR14
by Tom Boellstorff 25 Oct '12

25 Oct '12

Dear all: I'd like to thank the organizers of this year's AoIR conference for putting together a wonderful event. I learned so much, made new friends, and reunited with old ones. Next year's AoIR in Denver is of course a long way away. However, while it is fresh in my mind, I wanted to put out the following informal call. As was noted on this listserv a couple of weeks ago, my colleague at the University of California, Irvine, Mark Poster, passed away recently. He was a mentor and friend and I was influenced by his work since my earliest days of graduate school. I am thinking of trying to put together a panel for the 2013 AoIR meetings in Denver celebrating Mark's work and influence on a range of fields having to do with the internet, technology, information, media, culture, and so on. I haven't thought it through in detail but I think a great way to celebrate his legacy would be for people to talk about how their work has been shaped by Mark's thought. If you might be interested in participating in such a panel, could you please email me at tboellst(a)uci.edu. Also, if you can think of others who might be interested (and might not read this list), be they well-established scholars or more junior ones, please email me their names (and email addresses should you have them). I'll work on this in the spare moments I can find in the next month or two and then decide if this idea is doable based on the response that I get. Thanks for your help! All the best, Tom Boellstorff tom boellstorff/professor/department of anthropology/university of california/irvine/website

CFP: Personal Digital Archiving 2013
by Kendall, Lori 24 Oct '12

24 Oct '12

This may be of interest to some. Sorry to be a little late -- note that the deadline is coming up next week. Lori Kendall CALL FOR PROPOSALS Personal Digital Archiving 2013 21-22 February 2013 University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA http://www.pda2013.info<http://www.pda2013.info/> Our vital personal records are becoming digital, from family photographs and personal documents to health and financial information. New capture devices and media types are reshaping our personal and collective memories, and personal collections are growing in size and complexity. The Personal Digital Archiving 2013 Conference welcomes a broad community working to ensure long-term access for personal collections and archives. This year, the conference theme focuses on the relationships between collective and individual action around preserving personal digital content. Companies and cultural heritage institutions steward information that documents the life and times of private individuals. At the same time, individuals manage and “self- archive” content for future use by themselves and their families. Personal Digital Archiving 2013 invites proposals on the full range of topics relevant to personal digital archiving. Presentations might address materials and format challenges including family archives of photographs and home movies, personal health and financial data, scrapbooking, social network posts, genealogy, blogs, email and other correspondence. Presentations might also address themes that unite digital archives, including interface design for archives; institutional practices; community outreach; tools; and funding models. Additionally the program committee encourages proposals exploring the following questions: * What new social norms are emerging around preservation, access, and disclosure? * How should libraries, museums and archives help collect personal digital materials? * What are some practical strategies for helping libraries, museums and archives conduct personal archiving outreach to their communities? * What are effective outreach strategies for encouraging individuals to undertake personal digital archiving? * How can we cope with the intersection between personal data and collective or social data that is personal? * What tools and services are needed to better enable self-archiving? What models for user interfaces are most appropriate? * What are viable existing economic models that can support personal archives? What new economic models should we evaluate? * What are the the key issues associated with digital estate planning and “the digital afterlife”? The conference program will include three types of presentations: 20-minute papers, 5-minute lightning talks, and posters (including demos). If you wish to submit an abstract for the conference, please visit: http://www.pda2013.info/conftool Submissions should include: * The title of your project, paper or presentation * For 20-minute paper presentations, a 300-word abstract * For lightning talks and posters, a 150-300 word abstract * A brief biographical sketch or CV (no more than 2 pages) Paper, poster, and lightning talk submissions are due 2 November 2012

CFP for ICA2013: Politics of Incivility
by Burcu Bakioglu 24 Oct '12

24 Oct '12

Dear fellow-Aoir'ers, As ICA 2013 deadline is fast upon us, Robert Bodle and I also would like to post a CFP on the list. The working title is Politics of Incivility: [insert some sexy byline]. The panel will examine and complicate various anti-social activities such as trolling, hate speech, and others that take place on various online platforms. One of us will be presenting on anti-gay and racist Facebook group and fan pages and the other will be presenting on GNAA's trolling activities on Redditt. We are looking for abstracts that examine trolling networks as counterpublics that complicate mainstream discourse of online communities through disruptive play. We haven't written down a description yet so as not to limit the scope of the panel before we settle on abstracts. If interested, please send me (bbakiogl(a)gmail.com) a 150-word proposal by October 28. Cheers! -- Thanks, Burcu S. Air-L Digest Call for Papers: Twitter and Microblogging: Political, Professional and Personal Practices
by Gillen, Julia 24 Oct '12

24 Oct '12

Call for papers: Twitter and Microblogging: Political, Professional and Personal Practices<http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/events/twitter_and_microblogging/> Lancaster University, Lancaster, UK, 10 - 12 April 2013 Twitter and other micro-blogging platforms, with their short messages, in some cases circulated to millions of followers, were at first viewed with condescension and amusement: famously David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, opined, "Too many tweets make a twat." Other media initially treated Twitter as offering platforms for celebrities, pools of banality, streams of dumbed-down opinions. But people using Twitter quickly found an enormous range of diverse uses, revelling in opportunities for creativity that microblogging and associated applications offered. People involved Twitter in organising revolutions, disseminating scientific findings, promoting brands, communicating with friends and crafting new forms of artistic endeavours and communications. Where Twitter is not allowed, as in China, other microblogging platforms have taken on similar functions. This conference brings together a range of researchers doing detailed analyses of the discourse, practices, and social interactions of microblogging communities. Plenary speakers include: Janet Jones, University of the West of England Nathan Jurgenson, University of Maryland Greg Myers, Lancaster University Ruth Page, University of Leicester Lee Salter, University of the West of England Contributions are sought in a variety of formats. Seeking participants for HASTAC panel about social media use in the classroom
by Jacqueline Vickery 23 Oct '12

23 Oct '12

I’m looking for two or three participants for a panel about the use of new media in the college classroom to be presented at the 2013 HASTAC conference<http://hastac2013.org/cfp/> in Toronto, April 25-28. The style will be a structured conversation among panelist in which we share our experiences, successes, and failures of using social/digital media in the classroom. Because the conference theme is about the past and looking forward, I envision the panel talking about the transformation of technologies alongside the evolution of student skills and literacies. The purpose is to think critically about the possibilities and limitations of using social media as a resource in the classroom and to further explore some of the opportunities and challenges associated with using digital media as a teaching tool. Possible questions could address: Is Live Tweeting in class beneficial or a distraction? How might Wikis support collaborative learning? At a time when students can instantaneously look up information online, how might tests, assignments, and evaluations tap into connected learning in and out of the classroom? Where is the line between collaboration and cheating? What is the purpose of exams, which require students to study and memorize information, in an era in which information is quickly and readily available online? How can social media tools facilitate new modes of learning? What digital skills and literacies should colleges equip students with in order to prepare them for future careers? Please send a brief bio as well as a 200-300 word abstract to Jacqueline Vickery (jacqueline.vickery(a)unt.edu) by November 5, 2012. Briefly explain your experiences using social media in the classroom, questions you would raise, and how your experiences relate to the conference and panel themes. Thank you! - jacqueline Dr. Jacqueline Vickery, Ph.D. Assistant Professor University of North Texas Department of Radio-Television-Film
