Dear Colleagues, I was wondering if anyone can suggest particular tools for aggregating and analyzing Twitter content. What are the best tools for gathering tweets (by hashtags) and for analyzing activity (by these hastags)? Appreciate any suggestions. Maybe I'm old-school on this, but I'm surprised no-one's mentioned yourTwapperkeeper yet - in my experience, very straightforward to set up (all you need is a standard LAMP server setup to run it on), and fine for most standard Twitter capture tasks (e.g. tracking hashtags, keywords, specific users, etc.). It's open source and available here: https://github.com/jobrieniii/yourTwapperKeeper We've made some modifications to more easily export datasets in CSV/TSV-format datasets - see details here: http://mappingonlinepublics.net/2012/01/09/twapperkeeper-and-beyond-a-remin… Personally, I don't trust most out-of-the-box Twitter analytics tools, and prefer to roll my own - for processing CSV/TSV datasets containing Twapperkeeper-format data, I've been using the scriptable command-line tool Gawk with great success. The Amsterdam Institute of Network Cultures presents: Theory on Demand #11 Rasa Smite, Creative Networks, In the Rearview Mirror of Eastern European History This study explores the dawn of internet culture from an Eastern European perspective. Starting with a theoretical angle several networks are introduced and interpreted as complex socio-technical systems. The author analyzes the development of self-organized formations that started off as 'virtual communities', 'creative networks' that emerged from the early days of internet culture during the roaring mid 1990s until today's social media. Along with translocal case studies of Nettime, Syndicate, Faces and Xchange, as well as other important facets of early network culture in Europe, the study looks into the local E-Lab initiative in Riga, Latvia. Describing the pioneering network culture of 1990s, this study reflects on the larger changes in the social structure of today's society, 15 years later, that occur as follow-ups of these earlier socio-technical transformations. Rasa Smite is an artist, network researcher and cultural inventor, working with emerging media since the mid-1990s. She holds a PhD in sociology from the Riga Stradins University and currently is Associate Professor and Researcher in the Art Research Lab at Liepaja University. Rasa Smite is founding director of the Center for New Media Culture RIXC in Riga (www.rixc.lv) and founder of Internet culture and networked art projects such as Xchange, Acoustic Space Lab and more recently the Renewable Network. Together with her centre she organizes the annual festival Art+Communication (since 1996), curates networked art exhibitions and publishes Acoustic Space journal series, introducing novel themes such as internet radio (1997), locative media (2003), electromagnetic waves as material and medium in art (2006), art and renewable energy (2009), techno-ecologies (2009) and the art of resilience (2012). Experiments in (and out of) the studio: Art and Design Methods for Science and Technology Studies One day workshop, Tuesday October 16th, 2012 10:30AM-5:30PM, Copenhagen Business School, Copenhagen The organizers invite participation in an interdisciplinary one-day hands-on workshop on emerging methods of critical practice in science and technology studies, in particular methods that engage with art and design as well as performance and exhibition. Ultimately, we aim to refine our understanding and also intervene in the way that objects can stimulate and embody critique in STS. The workshop comprises three parts: (1) A morning of talks and participant discussion in the creation and interpretation of digital and material artifacts will operate as a means of exploring how techno-scientific knowledge is produced and how the social significance of that knowledge is refracted through material things. (2) A midday ethnographic exploration of the city of Copenhagen will focus on documenting urban technology through notes, photography, video and sketches to feed into the final session. (3) In the afternoon, we invite participants to build 'machines of enquiry' to materialise and experiment with the ethnographic material as a way of prototyping research insights.
